Remastered re-release of the second full-length album by American Christian Heavy Metal band.
Christian metal bands intentionally modeling their sound after that of their mainstream counterparts is not a recent phenomenon. The concept dates to the late eighties and Whitecross, who often invited comparison to Ratt as a result of Scott Wenzel’s gritty Stephen Pearcy-like vocal abilities. Trytan was next in line, highlighting a Rush influenced sound in which vocalist Larry Dean proved a near dead ringer for Geddy Lee. Finally, X-Sinner brought a strong affinity for AC/DC due to the vocal delivery of Dave Robbins closely resembling that of Brian Johnson. The trend continued into the nineties with David Benson, whose main calling card was a “Christian alternative to Ozzy”. True to form, his signature vocal style closely mirrors that of Ozzy Osbourne. The artist has released three albums: “Holy Psychotherapy” (1994), “Purpose Of The Cross” (1996) and “Premonition Of Doom” (1997). The David Benson back catalog, as one might imagine, has been out of print and hard to find for some time (“Holy Psychotherapy” was recently offered for $150 on eBay). Hence, a re-issue was long overdue, with Intense Millennium stepping to the plate in the spring of 2011 and making “Purpose Of The Cross” - re-mastered and with new album artwork - available on a limited basis (only 1000 copies printed).
“Purpose Of The Cross” is straight on Metal with some heavy Doom-ish Black Sabbath and early eighties Ozzy influences. Musically, there is a lot to like here. However, the key deciding factor comes down to not the fact the artist sounds like Ozzy but whether or not the songs are any good. And this is where Purpose Of The Cross succeeds in that at its best its songwriting is top notch and in no way “second rate” in comparison to the original.

DC4, the Los Angeles-based band, featuring guitarist Rowan Robertson (ex-Dio) alongside brothers Jeff Duncan (Armored Saint, Odin) on lead vocals and guitar, Shawn Duncan (Odin) on drums and Matt Duncan on bass. Who has worked with the likes of Armored Saint, Fates Warning, W.A.S.P. and Slayer, among countless other bands, is basically a member of the DC4 family.
DC4 resurrects and reinvigorates their roots by preaching the gospel of Hard Rock on their fourth release "Electric Ministry". Band plays a Metallized Hard Rock style that can be compared to classic era Van Halen if Dimebag Darrel was the guitarist and songwriter. Yes! They effectively craft songs with big, pumping, meaty riffs and hooks galore. Its essentially panties-on-the-head party Metal with a sleazy, “good times” vibe that veers into dark, disturbing areas at times.
Having spent time in such bands as the legendary Dio, Metal heroes Armored Saint, the short-lived Violet's Demise and Odin, a band who had reached cult status by the end of the 1980s without ever leaving Hollywood, DC4 is much more than just your average Hard Rock act!

De Profundis is a London-based band with a worldview firmly set within darkness and despair. They are very passionate in following their mission statement of fusing multiple sub-genres of Metal into a coherent whole. The core of "The Emptiness Within" is primarily based on Progressive Death Metal but there’s an abrasiveness to it that recalls 90s Death Metal, distinguishing it from the overly polished and quantized form that Progressive Metal bands are often tempted to take. There are also Black Metal influences lurking in the background, infusing the entire album with a Gothic atmosphere and coming to the fore in the blast beat and screech powered midsection of ‘Silent Gods’. At the same time, the band are willing to bring in elements from outside of metal like the piano and bass-led jazz interlude at the end of "Release". De Profundis handle their collection of disparate influences well, forging an approach that manages to contain surprisingly few internal contradictions.
The other side of the coin is that "The Emptiness Within" is surprisingly hard to listen to. Each track is full of impressive passages, but you need to push past the fact that they are all long, unconventional pieces of music before you can appreciate them. "Twisted Landscapes" stands out by being by far the most accessible song on the album, proving that the band can write simpler and catchier if they feel like without compromising their signature sound. It’s a triumph that the band resisted the urge to simplify the rest of their album in this manner, but it is also the factor most likely to turn listeners off their undoubtedly fine work.
Arran McSporran’s basswork is probably the most distinctive part of De Profundis’ sound. Rather than being a slave to the rhythm guitars his basslines are complex, exploring the entire fingerboard and regularly harmonising with the lead guitar. It’s a really interesting approach that adds a lot to the album, the three-guitar harmony midway through "This Wretched Plague" is proof enough of that.
De Profundis have been very successful with their third album despite being obviously limited by their budget. Intricate, Experimental and Progressive in the truest sense of the word, "The Emptiness Within" is hard work to begin with but rewards tenacious listeners with a dark, powerful experience that you would have to look hard for to find elsewhere!

The sixth re-release of the third full-length studio album by legendary American Death Metal band.
"Spiritual Healing" is nothing short of genre-defining, which marked a new turn in the Death discography, one which ushered in cleaner production, a new level of boundary pushing musicianship and songwriting skills that were previously unimaginable from a Metal band.
Released on February 16, 1990 by Combat Records, it's the band's only album to feature both guitarist James Murphy and bassist Terry Butler, and the last to feature drummer Bill Andrews. The album was recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida and was produced by Scott Burns. This was the final Death album cover painted by Ed Repka.
"Spiritual Healing" sets the standard for riffs, insane time changes and of course mainman Chuck Schuldiner’s masterful guitar solos. The album marked a shift in style and content for the band, lyrically focusing on social evils and musically being more technical, as opposed to the gore-centered, straightforward Death Metal of their previous two albums. Due to this shift, the album received polarizing reception upon release.
This period was controversial for Death, as Butler and Andrews toured Europe without Schuldiner (who refused to do the tour on the basis that it had been badly organized), with vocalist Louis Carrisalez and guitarist Walter Traschler in his place. In response, Schuldiner pursued legal action, while firing them and shifting towards employing guest musicians on future releases.
Butler and Murphy, along with Gus Rios and Matt Harvey, featured at The Brass Mug in Tampa, Florida on December 11, 2021, playing all of "Spiritual Healing" and "commemorating" 20 years since Schuldiner's death.
It's really only in comparison to history-making achievement, their "great leap forward" 1991's seminal "Human" album and Schuldiner's subsequent masterpieces, that "Spiritual Healing" is justifiably diminished, because in every other sense it's a hell of an album that reflects what was probably Death's most crucial transition phase, to boot.
Metal Hammer called "Spiritual Healing" one of the best Heavy Metal releases of the 1990s.

Re-release of the second full-length album by the cult Italian Thrash Metal band.
Apart from their debut full length album, Deathrage sees their sophomore (and final) full-length album getting reissue treatment as well by Punishment 18 Records. With the Italian Thrash outfit’s debut "Self Conditioned, Self Limited" leaving a rather deep impact with the speed and their references to classic Thrash bands such as Sadus and Dark Angel, it would be nice to hear the band’s progression and evolution that came with the introduction of new vocalist, Alex Nicolini.
Along with the inclusion of Nicolini, on "Down In The Depth Of Sickness", Deathrage ditches their classic Thrash Metal sound for one that is somewhat more Progressive than their previous material. For one, the band has taken down the speed by a notch, and from the melodic approach that is on opening track "D.I.T.D.O.S.", it sounds almost as though the band had taken a more traditional Heavy Metal route instead on "Down In The Depth Of Sickness", upping the heaviness for the reduction in speed on the album. From "Nobody Was Here" onwards, Nicolini’s vocal approach takes some getting used to, with his vocal being less gruff that that of his predecessor, with the aforementioned track even seeing him use a spoken style, though for the most part his vocals sound like a rather frustrated shout. Tracks such as "A Price Too High to Pay" further reinforce that touch of Heavy Metal with the riffs and the lead guitars, at the same time showing the light-hearted side of the band.
Deathrage has this time included some rather Progressive elements into their music, and this could be heard from the numerous rather sudden shifts in pace and tempo throughout the album. Furthermore, "Down In The Depth Of Sickness" also introduced a darker sound to Deathrage‘s music than before, and aside from the overall slower pace and heavier sound that the band utilised on the album, there is also the inclusion of sound and spoken samples at the background to create a lingering haunting atmosphere.
That said, there are still elements that are still reminiscent of their debut, and tracks like "Suicide Age" has a rather heavy Punk edge to it, with that simple single, repeating riff that lasts the entirety of the album and the gang-chants that accompany the track.
Re-edition features seven bonus demo tracks, and while the album tracks themselves might disappoint Thrashers that liked "Self Conditioned, Self Limited", these demo tracks manage to provide some salvation, having a sound closer to the band’s debut!

Wow, what an album! A dream for all fans of Razor, Dark Angel and Slayer!! What King Fowley and his companions have laid down here, though, is one of the best Thrash hammers of the year of 2005! At least if you prefer the old school and are able to digest Death Metal influences.
On the one hand Deceased nuke us with highly melodic killer riffs, on the other hand there are also really heavy blasting attacks to be heard. That said, you seriously had to worry about the health of Mr Fowley, as several surgeries, that were the consequence of a blood clot in the legs, an apoplexy caused by a nut-sized clot in the brain, the collapse of the right lung etc ultimately forced Fowley to hand over the drum duties to Dave Castillo and concentrate on the vocals only, otherwise the line-up stayed the same: Mark Adams (guitars), Mike Smith (guitars), Ley Snyder (bass). In return, tunes such as “The Kept” or the insane “Unwanted Memories” provide for perpetual erections and fractures of the neck vertebrae with all well-disposed Thrashers…
The Razor-like wrecking-ball is damn cool, too, sounds like the “Malicious Intent”-era of the Canadian founding fathers. Deceased stay in shape throughout and also serve breaks like “A Visit From The Dead” every now and then, which rocks decently nevertheless, but sounds somewhat slower, compared to the rest. There is variation thanks to breaks, tempo changes and technically perfect instrumentation. Countless killer riffs swirl around your ears. But on the whole, “Stop and Go” till you go ballistic rules. Fowley’s pissed off voice is just perfect for Thrash Metal! The fact that the dear man averted the grim reaper’s scythe gives the disc another kick into the ass and raises the aggro level!!
This is one of the best releases they have ever made!!!
