Few bands have managed to capture the essence of their own art already in their very first recorded effort. Describing the music of Opeth is yet another difficult assignment, as the Progressive Death Metal label, which is often attached to their style, is far from incorrect but equally far from descriptive. The band’s Death Metal roots are obvious in their approach to intricate riffing and sudden tempo changes, although they never reach what the average listener would call fast paces; to this basic formula, Opeth add a huge does of melodic taste in the form of countless harmonies, tasteful acoustic passages and occasional clean vocals. This isn’t that much explanatory either, but then again, a band whose songs have an average duration of ten minutes needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated. This is a collaboration of so many different genres and styles of music that it is nearly unclassifiable. There are definitely elements of Death Metal, Traditional Metal, Doom Metal, Progressive Rock and even Jazz. There are definitely more elements, but Opeth takes all of these different styles and molds them together seamlessly. Exceedingly heavy riffs turn into Death Metal crunch, which then turns into a haunting acoustic passage, almost as if it was completely natural to bend a multitude of genres into a new sound. The musicianship is excellent. One should notice the difficulty of the riffs that are played immediately, especially if they’re a guitar player as well. The songwriting is excellent; everything seems to have its place. Each track on this album is exceptional on its own.
Opeth showed the world that they were the masters of Progressive Death Metal. “Orchid” is a true work of art from a band, that made excellence as its standard quality share!

 You will have trouble finding another album with the same impact as this one. If you buy this album to sit down and relax with nothing else going on and listening to it start to finish, and you will be shocked! So, is it a masterpiece? Yes!! Is it a varied album? Following up a nearly ubiquitous critical smash such as 2000's "Blackwater Park" might seem like a daunting proposition for most bands, but Sweden's Opeth has made a career out of proving it is not just any other band, wowing observers with its boundless creativity and seemingly effortless brilliance. With producer (and Porcupine Tree leader) Steve Wilson once again on hand to assist in Opeth's quest to remain true to its origins while progressing ever forward, the band's sixth volume, "Deliverance" offers no great departure by established standards, but rather continues exploring the possibilities of this very fruitful relationship. And sure enough, for all of its continued aggression and overall compliance with Death Metal's key elements - blastbeat drumming runs, Mikael Akerfeldt's frequently croaked vocals and eternally bleak lyrics - "Deliverance" is altogether more subtle than any of its predecessors, approaching listeners with haunting nuances and masterful dynamics rather than overwhelming them with sheer mass and complexity.
Dominated as always by imposing ten-plus minute musical movements, this is creative evolution driven to perfection. Both opener "Wreath" and the ensuing title track eschew traditionally crushing Death Metal riffs for no less pummeling, hammered staccatos delivered with near-Industrial precision. The culmination of this quest for fluidity, third movement "A Fair Judgement" is not only the album's most accessible number, it's arguably also the best. Clearly the evolutionary successor to previous dam-bursting experiments such as Still Life's "Face of Melinda" and "Blackwater Park" 's "The Drapery Falls", its striking harmonies are borne out with a stately, elegant grace punctuated by what is sure to be one of the year's most beautiful guitar solos. A two-minute acoustic interlude called "For Absent Friends" allows for a short break prior to the album's two equally challenging but rewarding final epics, the incredibly multifaceted "Master's Apprentices" and the especially violent "By the Pain I See in Others".
All in all, some naysayers could very well label "Deliverance" as something of a "Blackwater Park" redux, but this would be a shortsighted reaction given the album's remarkable individual achievement. The fact remains that Opeth is still quite without peer in its contribution to advancing the cause of Heavy Metal in the new millennium, and in that light, "Deliverance" stands as yet another work of towering vision from this incredible band!!
"Deliverance" peaked on Top Heatseekers at No. 16 and the Top Independent Albums chart at No. 19, making it the first Opeth release ever to chart. Opeth also won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance after releasing the album.

"Heritage" finds the Swedish band abandoning Death Metal: no growled vocals, no blistering fast power riffs and no blastbeats.
“Heritage” is easily Opeth's most musically adventurous recording. Written primarily by vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt, these ten songs are drenched in instrumental interludes, knotty key and chord changes, shifting time signatures, clean vocals, and a keyboard-heavy instrumentation that includes Mellotrons, Rhodes pianos and Hammond organs (ironic since keyboardist Per Wiberg left the band after "Heritage" was completed).
Opening with the title track, a haunting solo piano instrumental, it careens into the explosive "The Devil's Orchard", with spectacular, arpeggiatic guitar work by Fredrik Åkesson and matching drums by Martin Axenrot. With a huge, swirling B-3 in the backdrop, it melds Progressive Metal to Prog Rock, with Åkerfeldt's clear, clean singing. "I Feel the Dark" marries Åkerfeldt's classical guitar to piano, flute, a droning Martin Mendez bassline, and double-timed, quietly tense drum kit work. "Slither" sounds like Motörhead meeting early-'70s Deep Purple. "Nepenthe" begins as a ballad but shifts toward Jazz-Rock in the instrumental break before finding its way back to a middle ground with sparse instrumentation and taut dynamics. "Haxprogress" draws real inspiration from King Crimson; Mellotrons and nylon-string guitars give way to Åkerfeldt's crooning, thundering bass-lines, and syncopated drums. At eight-and-a-half minutes, "Famine" is the album's most abstract cut, with guest Alex Acuña adding Latin percussion to the mix, creating spaciousness in a long intro before giving way to colliding Prog Rock at the seam where King Crimson's "Larks Tongues in Aspic, Pt. 2" meets Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick." "The Lines in My Hand" is the set's most aggressive cut, with a deeply satisfying guitar crunch. "Folklore," with its myriad instrumental and vocal parts, complex melody, and breakbeats, comes off as an eight-minute suite before closing with another Jazz- and Rolk-inflected instrumental entitled "Marrow of the Earth."
Love it or hate it, "Heritage", for its many excesses (and stellar conception and execution) is a brave album. It opens the door for Opeth to pursue many new directions and reinvent themselves as a band.
Album has a critical and commercial success, and sold 19,000 units in the United States in its debut week, charting at number 19 on the Billboard 200.
Approached with an open mind, "Heritage' will certainly prove a rewarding listen for most experienced fans of the band, an album containing all the signature twists & turns that has become Opeth's trademark, albeit in a way totally new for the band. "Heritage" is arguably the band's 10th magnum opus in it's now 20 plus year career and without a doubt represent the grandest vision yet captured on an Opeth album!

"Distant Encounters" is the kind of album you like being around, digging its music or not. It has class, it shows dignity in songwriting, it's full of melodic moments for the relative base and seems to be based on neat motives and clean intentions.
The album will also appeal someone that has nothing to do with the AOR music scene, so imagine that for sure will be a great album for all AOR fans!

It is an oneiric experience where self-imposed reality fades it. Reflections on life and death. Dark and deep sound like the anguish of existing. For lovers of bands with their own sound.
The Spaniards sound very matured on this album. Nothing feels forced or rushed. Everything is patient, well-planned, and well-executed. There’s a great deal of beauty, emotion, sadness, and hatred in this music without there being too much overlap or there being chunky, awkward transitions. Musically speaking, this is a seriously impressive Funeral Doom release. The parallels that can be drawn from the subtle transitions from vulnerable to vengeful are entirely relatable in life, and the band has captured such effortlessly.

The second full-length studio album by cult Brazilian Heavy Metal band.
One of the first real Metal bands from the south of Brazil. They were founded in 1986, but started with playing covers, before recorded a demo in Portuguese in 1988. This demo includes also the song "Orquídea Negra", which they never released again, as it is a cover song from the Folk Brazilian singer Zé Ramalho, and they never got the permission to use it officially.
After many line-up changes, only singer Andreé Graebin was left from the original line-up. Only in 1992 they managed to release their first album, "Who's Dead?", now in English. It was released by small label Krig-há-Bandôlo Records, with a bad distribution.
In 1994, band recorded the second album, but did not find a company. In 1995 the singer, which was the last original member of the band, leaves the band. Orquídea Negra finally self-released their second album in 1996.
The third album, "Blood Of The Gods", was released by Secret Service Records and Metal Soldiers Records with various bonus tracks.

Ortega is a four-piece Sludge/Doom band from the north of The Netherlands. Four men telling a tale of the sea, musically depicted in a broad and visual manner. Ortega's sound is best described as Doom Metal balanced with spherical soundscapes, brought together with slow and heavy riffs.
Everything flows smoothly, and sounds great. It's a mix of a variety of styles, but one they've managed to master and make their own.
It’s rare to find a truly immersive experience in music that strikes a balance between credible musical longevity and pure entertainment. "1634" – it's a Post Doom, with mildly Gothic influences and maybe some Sludgy Rock elements. The end product is a hypnotic opus with using of other musical instruments like the drifting violins and plenty of repetition feeds into the feeling of undulating waves and the endless sea. 
"1634" was originally released by band in 2010 as a concept-album, packaged in a handmade cover CD limited to 100 copies. The album is now released for the first time on CD limited to 1000 copies in a spot-varnished digipack.
Either way "1634" is all too good to miss, superb, and strongly recommend! Suggest a double dose of brandy, rum or whatever else takes your fancy, settle yourself in a quiet room with the lights turned down low and prepare for the voyage!!

The third full-length studio album by American Progressive Rock band.
O.S.I.'s (Office of Strategic Influence) third album is a Prog-Metal outing that has a strong Alt Rock influence. No one will accuse "Blood" of going out of its way to sound like Dream Theater, which is ironic in light of the fact that the co-leaders on this 2009 release are singer/keyboardist Kevin Moore (formerly of Dream Theater) and guitarist/keyboardist Jim Matheos (of Fates Warning fame).
Prog-Metal often has an overt Power Metal influence; "Blood"'s approach, however, is Pink Floyd and King Crimson by way of Radiohead, Nirvana, Grunge, Alt-Metal and Alt-Rock. Instead of bright, shiny '70s/'80s-like guitars, we're talking chug-chug riffs and downtuned guitars. "Blood" has its aggressive, forceful moments, but even so, the material is quite melodic and, most of the time, O.S.I. are moody and Darkly Atmospheric more than anything. Some of that moodiness comes from O.S.I.'s appreciation of Pink Floyd and King Crimson, but some of it comes from their appreciation of Radiohead. So there is no getting around the fact that this 47-minute CD draws its inspiration from different eras and different generations of Rock.
Some headbangers, who know Moore from Dream Theater and Matheos from Fates Warning, might be surprised by how much Alternative appeal "Blood" has, but that appeal is a plus on an album that falls short of earth-shattering but is still solid and worthwhile.

Melodic Rock mostly fairly tame and predictable, the type of music that doesn't offend or offer many surprises. But when it's done correctly it can also be one of the most rewarding genres, and Outloud have done it right!
The music on "We'll Rock You To Hell And Back Again!" is huge, and the type of Arena Rock that could blow the roof off even the largest venue!!
"What I Need" and the first single "We Run" kick off the CD, and arguably represents the best one-two punch put to disc that year. "What I Need" especially Rocks with its rapid-fire drumming and soaring vocals - picture the best from Europe, Pole Position and Sargant Fury. To put everything in perspective, "Tonite" pales in comparison to those first two tracks yet would be one the best songs on almost any album put out that year!
No doubt, this CD is great from beginning to end, it's the type of bombastic sound that Bon Jovi likely wishes they could still dream up. And it's all done by a relatively new band which is amazing in itself. The story behind Outloud is that Nightwish and Firewind guitarist Bob Katsionis was teaching fellow musician Tony Kash, who was coming up with some impressive riffs. Katsionis then recruited Talon vocalist, Chandler Mogel, and his drumming band-mate Mark Cross to put together the Outloud venture. Even though the original recordings got deleted and the band had to start over from scratch, the whole project has turned out to be the work of genius. Not only do the afore mentioned tracks Rock, but also check out the killer riffs in "Search For The Truth", the unrelenting "Breathing Fire" and the epic "Out In The Night".
In 2009 Outloud have set the bar for Melodic Metal - and they've set it high! "We'll Rock You To Hell And Back Again!" is perfect in almost every sense, offering Hard Rock tracks, ballads, and a musicianship that is top-notch - it's hard to even imagine how successful this band would have been if they arrived twenty years earlier!! Taking a trip to hell and back isn't supposed to be this satisfying!!!

The nineteenth full-length studio album by legendary American Thrash Metal band.
The band's first album to feature drummer Jason Bittner, making it their first one without Ron Lipnicki since "ReliXIV" (2005), as he had left Overkill shortly after the release of its predecessor "The Grinding Wheel" (2017).
Overkill is still relevant in the Metal scene, and their albums are always a joy to listen to. There’s no end in sight for their soon-to-be forty-year career, and their consistency is unmatched in the Thrash ranks. If you’re already a fan of Bobby and his gang, there are plenty of elements on "The Wings Of War" to enjoy. If you’re new to them, this album is quite a gateway into the realms of the band.
The album peaked at number 158 on the chart, making it Overkill's third-lowest chart position, behind "Taking Over" and "Ironbound". However, "The Wings Of War" was well-received in Europe, particularly on the German charts, where it debuted at number five, making it Overkill's highest-ever chart position.
