Atrocity, one of Germany's most successful Metal bands, is one of the most experimental and diverse musical acts in the history of metal. They have always found the courage to explore uncharted territories, while delivering top-notch productions. One such production was their previous full-length release, "Werk 80 II", which entered the top 20 of the German Media Control Charts. Looking further back into the past, the Metal chameleons forged an alliance with vocalist Yasmin. It came as no surprise, as the band had already worked with A-list vocalists in the early nineties. The result of this cooperation was the EP "Calling The Rain"- a pioneering work at that time. The songs were a perfect blend of ethnic elements, world music, and Metal. Up to this point, this was an unimaginable mix of atmospheric, yet gripping musical diversity. The latest Atrocity feat. Yasmin album "After The Storm" does not simply reiterate the sounds of the past, but rather elevates the songwriting and production to an entire new level. All instruments were performed live and the ample amount of percussion allows for a tapestry of complementary rhythms. The driving and tribal-like beats are the foundation of Atrocity's music, making way for the intensity and fascination that follows. The string instruments and vocals harmonize perfectly with both the mood of the individual songs and the music as a whole. Besides wonderful atmospheric songs such as the title track "After the Storm" or the emotive "Silvan Spirit", true Rock songs like "Black Mountain" or the anthem "Transilvania" divulge a completely new side to the Metal band. With "A New Arrival", "As the Sun Kissed the Sky", or the music-turned-Celtic-legend "The Otherworld", Atrocity, together with the exotic vocals of Yasmin, holds the audience captive in their mythic world. The band featuring the singing siblings then switches into high gear with the catchy song "Call of Yesteryear".

Musically, the band surely improved. The tracks are more thought out and diversified and build up some meditative new age atmosphere that fits to the natural topics. The band focused on some more complex structures, gives more space to folk instruments and spacing atmospheres as in "Silvan Spirit" or "Transilvania" that are offer an enjoyable and relaxing listening experience. Another good point is that the purely instrumental tracks don't have the improved but still somewhat faceless vocals of the two singers. The band missed the occasions and finally created a fairly better "Calling The Rain" sequel that has a very good flow. The record is easy to digest and works well as a very harmonic and inspiring background music. There are still better combinations of Rock and Metal music with ethnic folk sounds but I give this record a few spins from time to time and see it as a big improvement from the first release.

Like previous album, "Okkult", Atrocity is in full Death Metal mode on "Masters Of Darkness". But being a band that has been able to shift and adapt with the times, don’t expect a simple old school death metal trip. While Atrocity is still pulling from their roots in terms of brutality, it’s not without some more modern charm to it. The production is, of course, top-notch and helps to differentiate it from many in the Death Metal spectrum, who tend to favour a more muddy sound.
This EP is crisp and clear, yet can still hit like a freight-train. “Menschenschlachthaus” is a real ripper, with rousing blastbeats and thunderous riffs that square off perfectly with Alexander Krull’s gruff yet intelligible delivery. The riffing itself is catchy without having to lose intensity, as “Gates to Oblivion” shows in its mid-tempo rampage. But pick of the litter would be the closer “Devil’s Covanent,” where lively riffs are intertwined with more epic melodies (backed by a choir), taking the song into the stratosphere. It’s brutal, it’s melodic, and bound to stick with you after it ends.
While one could argue that 4-songs isn’t enough here, the blistering EP does leave one with a sense of satisfaction. Solid, chunky Death Metal that manages to be epic in scope while being aggressive and in your face. Likewise, it achieves its goal of reminding the listener that Atrocity means business, and heightens the anticipation for whatever is next to come!

Atrocity's 2nd full-length cover album, sequel to the original "Werk 80" album released in 1997.
Eleven years after the first ''Werk 80'' release, Atrocity comes around with its follow-up featuring covers of national and international Pop and Rock songs of the eighties. What seems like an unoriginal idea at first sight turns out to be a quite interesting affair. While the first album had a martial Industrial Rock tone, this sequel sounds completely different and mostly focuses on a more Epic Symphonic structure. With this classical vibe, Atrocity explores numerous sub-genres and sounds even more eclectic than usual by its own diversified standards. This album offers pretty much everything from Symphonic Power Metal as in ''The Sun Always Shines on TV'' over Symphonic Gothic Metal in ''Hey Little Girl'' to Symphonic Death Metal in ''Relax''.
On the positive side, this release is much more diversified, entertaining and inspired than the somewhat lackluster first part. The song selection is also better since the first installment included some controversial tunes from German Underground bands while this record only features some of the very best commercial Pop and Rock songs from the eighties. While Alexander Krull is still an average clean vocalist at best, his performance sounds more skilled than eleven years earlier where his aqualung vocals sounded similar in each tune while he sounds more melodic and has a slightly higher range on this output.
Fans of '80s Pop may find Atrocity’s name all too appropriate when they hear "Werk 80 II", an album of Metallic synth-slick covers of hits from New Wave heavyweights such as Ah-Ha, Simple Minds, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood... "Werk 80 II" treats material often viewed as lightweight with the reverence and gravity that many of the songs deserve. Bronski Beat’s melancholy “Smalltown Boy” is inflated with Metallic grandeur and a mournful choir, and the dorm room staple “Don’t You Forget About Me” is juiced with a forceful chorus!
''Werk 80 II'' is a clear improvement over its first installment thanks to a more diversified, entertaining and skilled reinvention of classic Rock and pOop songs of the eighties. To keep it short, those who liked the first record should definitely check out the much better follow-up. It's also recommended to eclectic Symphonic Metal fans. Those who are missing the commercial Pop and Rock music of the eighties for nostalgic or closed-minded reasons might also give this a try! No matter your opinion on the source material, it’s definitely fun!!

The Atrocity's first full-length album with cover versions of popular 1980s songs.
Atrocity is one of the most experimental Metal bands of all times. From Grindcore to Symphonic Metal and everything between, there isn't much left the band hasn't tried out in its long career. Even for such an Eclectic band, ''Werk 80'' was a quite surprising release that got the band some minor mainstream success while more traditional Extreme Metal fans of the band's early years didn't dig the band's new experiment. ''Werk 80'' offers cover versions of national and international Pop and Rock songs of the eighties. The band's song selection turns out being as eclectic as the band itself and varies from international smash hits from David Bowie and Duran Duran to less known German underground tracks from And One and D.A.F. to only name a few examples.
The band mostly used a cool, dark and low Industrial Rock and Metal sound for their interpretations that would get some critical acclaim from the German Alternative and Gothic scene where new genres such as Neue Deutsche Härte in the key of Rammstein and Neue Deutsche Todeskunst in the vein of Das Ich were on the rise. ''Werk 80'' dominated by low and almost emotionless vocals, simplistic and heavy riffs, minimalist keyboard patterns and an almost robotic rhythm section. Many songs actually sound like danceable march music with a martial vibe.
The cover artworks of this record and the different singles with a lot of sexual appeal only add to the fact that the band tried to shock more conservative minds.
Even though they sold out in their later years, Atrocity continues making great music. "Werk 80" is a mix of great hits from the 80's, covered by Atrocity! All those things from the 80's that you can't stop love, now 'metalized'!!

Originally named Heresy, Atrophy was formed in 1986. After releasing their debut 6-track demo "Chemical Dependency" (1987), the band was signed by Roadrunner Records, where they released two albums, "Socialized Hate" (1988) and "Violent By Nature" (1990), before disappearing into obscurity, and then some 30 years later to re-appear. At their early career, Atrophy toured the U.S. and Europe with fellow Sacred Reich and Coroner.
As a result of their fast-playing style and lyrics (often covering death, politics and social issues), the band has been compared to that of their Thrash Metal contemporaries such as Testament, Vio-Lence, Forbidden, Sacred Reich and Nuclear Assault.
The CD includes the complete remastered "Chemical Dependency" demo, plus 4 live tracks recorded in Toronto, Canada on January 30, 1989. 16-page booklet features extensive liner notes by Chris Forbes from Metal Core fanzine and many pictures from the early days.

Attrition has created one if the most incredible goth-electro records. The theme seems to be an exploration of God, and spirituality, with a very big (and blatant) nod to Dante's “Inferno”. Perhaps the idea is to explore the meeting of the spirit and the body. Album could refer to the banalizing of hell, the everyday descent into sin,the hell that is the everyday. And this theme is perfectly accented by the music. Using a mix of groovy electronics, violins, whispered male vocals, as well as operatic female utterings, and well placed samples, Attrition has made a mix of gloomy and captivating songs. A smooth blend of theosophy catchy bass-lines, groovy drums, angelic melodies and haunting atmospheres; in other words worth hearing!

A brooding wind sweeps down from the North. Music tends to be the one thing that can separate you from the drudgery of life, and especially so, the majesty of grand Ambient atmospheres. Aura Negativ offers this imaginative possibility, and is a new side-project from Eöl, the Spanish musician and soundsmith behind Numen and Elffor.
This debut self-titled effort is comprised of a handful of tracks that were recorded around 2005 and eventually gathered together for their release here. These six untitled tracks are a combination of majestic Ambient structures and harmonious swells the lull over grand sweeping melodies and curiously distorted vocals and samples. It is hard to describe this album without using overly ambiguous words, but that is primarily for the fact that it is such a grand experience that words are simply not sufficient enough to describe the intricate emotions and sensations that seep through every melody and every sound of this album. Even though this album is far from unique in its shape and sound, it has been crafted so bloody well that it deserves high praise for the atmosphere that was obtained alone. It feels like a soundtrack to some grand, void-born adventure, and although the tracks all differ substantially from the one another, they also individually retain a unique and powerful sound.
The combination of a heavy atmosphere and distorted vocals meld together exquisitely to bring both intensity and an overwhelming other-worldliness to the song. The rhythm here has been crucially structured and never takes up more space than it needs in order to amplify the superb minimal melodies of the song, yet it remains like a beating heart all through the track.
Aura Negativ might be a trunk of odd bits and ends from Eöl’s past, dug up and crafted together into a release in the latest months of 2013, but it will blow you away in its potent gale. This album might well be the grail for seekers of a soundtrack to the void between the harsher Black Ambient and the more melodious atmospheric shapes of Classical Dark Ambient.

Aggressive Blackened Death Metal with hooks and Technical finesse that invokes the Ancient Gods!
Aurora Borealis has been around for years. Underground fans might remember the band as far as 1994. Each of their albums was a large improvement over the earlier ones. And through time, Aurora Borealis had great musicians, which indicates the quality and level of the band.
Aurora Borealis plays Black/Death Metal, remaining gritty not unlike Angelcorpse, but being more dynamic comparatively. It has got unique themes and the album artworks represent that. As the band name suggests, they are indicative of the Aurora Borealis phenomenon, although the band has progressed to involve sci-fi imagery not far removed from Nocturnus, where artworks are concerned. Musically, the band remains true to its original Black/Death sound, but it’s doing it with far more potential and competency. The band’s definitely got a solid US Death Metal sense, it is not flirting too much with the European style of melody-infused Death Metal as it may appear. One will be surprised to find it so hard-hitting and gravelly, and yet be rife with some of the most driven and enthusiastic activity. It is not solely focused on being Technical (which in a way it is) but it is varied, and it is catchy. Floridian Death Metal bands have much in common with the way Aurora Borealis structures its songs and there is the ever-present Morbid Angel influence, infected with some early Malevolent Creation rabidity. This is what makes Death Metal so good.
It’s got Death Metal in its genes, but Aurora Borealis takes the vitriol from Black Metal, especially in the vocal department, and gives the music an edge that is hard to miss. Here there is that special spice, that sizzling quality that comes from the rasps, adding a certain Thrashiness to it as well. The hooks make this album special, because writing good songs can be safely left in the hands of founding member Ron Vento. It might be normal to get lost a bit in the music, but they come as a constant reminder of the quality of the band’s music, never letting your attention drift too far away.
“Prophecy Is The Mold In Which History Is Poured” is an accomplished effort, where the band has used its almost three decades of experience to make sure it’s as potent as ever, probably better. In times when numbing brutality is the order of the day, Aurora Borealis surely stands out, head's and shoulders above!

Despite their long-haired, pretty-boy image and the occasional hot guitar solo, Autograph was one of the more mainstream Hard Rock bands associated with the L.A. Metal scene. And though it spawned only one hit (the MTV favourite "Turn Up the Radio"), their 1984 debut is a solid collection of hook-heavy tunes. The album also featured another minor hit, "Send Her to Me". Both songs had accompanying videos. According to lead guitarist Steve Lynch, "Turn Up the Radio", was recorded at the tail end of the "Sign In Please" sessions and that RCA didn't find it suitable enough for inclusion. However, after stern insistence, the band was able to get it on the album. Neither party, however, expected it to gain such critical success that led to the album's Gold status.
"Turn Up the Radio" was featured in a variety of media in the coming decades and is regarded as a '80s Metal staple. "Turn Up the Radio" was featured in "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" and "All I'm Gonna Take" was featured in "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories" games, respectively.
Anyone expecting ridiculous aggression should stick with Mötley Crüe, but for those who prefer a sleeker Hard Rock sound in the vein of Night Ranger, this album will certainly satisfy!
At 1985 the album reached 29 place and Billboard 200 and was certified Gold in the USA by RIAA.

Doomed up, mud'n'guts Death Metal, most of which compiles previously released out of print EP material, remastered and repackaged in a terrific hardcover booklet with righteously reeking artwork from Matt Cavotta.
"All Tomorrow's Funerals" includes the remastered versions of songs from early '90s EPs "Retribution For The Dead" and "Fiend For Blood; "Horrific Obsession" and "Feast of the Graveworm" from the "Horrific Obsession" Single; "Funereality" from the "Peaceville Vol. 4" compilation; the five cuts that first appeared on "The Tomb Within" EP, which includes one of the most nefarious Doom licks Autopsy has ever recorded on "My Corpse Shall Rise"; four new cuts, including a title track, "Broken People", "Maggot Holes" that pick up right where the phenomenal "Macabre Eternal" left off, and an appropriately creepy/bizarre close to the proceedings called "Sign of the Corpse"; and he aforementioned "Mauled to Death", which is a 1987 demo track resurrected for this release.
If you already own most of the previously released material, you could make the argument that "All Tomorrow's Funerals" is for that reason alone not all that essential. But you'd be totally dismissing the impact of the remastering, the first-rate packaging, and the new songs. Besides, the original recordings offered much in the way of compositional value to begin with. None of it comes close to unacceptable. This is one case where remastering adds immense value to the oldest recordings; much like the production on "Macabre Eternal" was of a high, modern standard that didn't sap the filthy essence of Autopsy.
The commentary contributed to the booklet by guys like Bob Bagchus (Asphyx), Ted Skjellum (DarkThrone), and Dopi (Machetazo) is well worth the read. All are long-time fans that are intimately familiar with the Autopsy material and offer insight into the band's influence and impact on the genre of Death Metal. Collectively written comments from Autopsy are also included.
The real story told through all that blood-gargling and sewage riffing is how Autopsy managed to get better as players and songwriters with the new material (as already proven by "The Tomb Within" and "Macabre Eternal"), while staying true to the form perfected by the band all those years ago. It is impressive how cohesive "All Tomorrow's Funerals" sounds during front-to-back-listens. The reanimated and the newly formed fit together snugly, the result a compilation that flows damn near as well as a proper studio release.

Both records are long out of print and very hard to come by, meaning this collection will be warmly received by fans of the bands more widely available third album "O’Funeralia" (2009) – and those fans may be many as all three albums were very well received by fans and critics alike upon their original release.
From the very start of debut album "In Loneliness of Two Souls" it is apparent what subgenre we are dealing with here, as images of early My Dying Bride and Anathema are instantly evoked.
"By The Candles Obsequial" is indeed a progression in the band’s sound, with more variety of elements, especially the addition of occasional female vocals, which, although a bit of a clichéd way for a band of this ilk to diversify, is tried and tested and certainly works. Certainly the keyboards are a cut above those found on the debut, really standing out rather than being a bit of a background/textural element. The general level of both song writing and production also seems improved and really puts "By The Candles Obsequial" up there in the elite category within the genre.
All in all this has to go down as an absolutely essential release for anybody into this kind of Melodic Death/Doom Metal who does not own both albums. Sadly the band have released nothing new since 2009, but perhaps the renewed interest generated by this release will spark something. We certainly hope so!

This is Pell’s fourteenth studio album, excluding "Diamonds Unlocked" cover album, and his eighth with Hardline vocalist Johnny Gioeli and journeyman drummer Mike Terrana on board.
Axel Rudi Pell is nothing if not dependable, and in addition to knocking out a new album every two years fans can always count on each new album sounding almost exactly like the albums that came before it. The formula goes something like this: start with a short instrumental introductory track (for Circle of the Oath it’s “The Guillotine Suite”), then blaze right through a couple of high octane Hard Rockers (“Ghost in the Black”, “Run With the Wind” and “Before I Die”). After that it’s time for a sweeping epic that clocks in somewhere around the ten minute mark (title track). Then do it all over again, with a couple more rockers and at least one ballad, before closing things out with another epic (“World of Confusion”). Another brief instrumental is optional. As for lyrics, just throw everything Ronnie James Dio ever wrote into a hat and pull lines out at random until you have enough to fill an album.
Now, if you love that formula then by all means pick up a copy of this album. You’ll get Pell’s dynamite guitar work, Terrana’s very steady drumming and, perhaps most notably, a powerhouse vocal performance by Gioeli.
Overall, Axel Rudi Pell’s newest effort “Circle Of The Oath” is sheer testimony to the fact that there is no end in sight for this brilliant guitarist, and yet again, he has churned out an excellent set of tunes!
