"Damned In Black" is the second album of Immortal's hellish Holy Trinity, released between creative breakthrough "At The Heart Of Winter" and well-honed masterpiece "Sons Of Northern Darkness".
In comparison, "Damned In Black" strikes one as being the family's nasty, spiteful little brother, sounding slightly rushed, unkempt, and panicky, with whirlwind blastbeats more prominent in the arrangements. But the album benefits from this approach; it's an angrier, more fiery record, especially during barnburners "Triumph", "My Dimension,", and "In Our Mystic Visions Blest", which nod respectfully toward the band's speed-drenched early days, albeit with the more balanced, well-crafted songwriting skills of latter-day Immortal.
"Against the Tide (In the Arctic World)", "The Darkness That Embrace Me", and the title track are more melodic and grandly epic, complex but never unwieldy. Immortal's greatest strength is their well-conceived instrumental approach - it's never self-indulgent or fanciful, always memorable, and only living to serve the song.
Producer Peter Tagtgren has seen many of his Scandinavian brethren through the doors of his Abyss Studios, but he's never gelled with any band quite like Immortal, giving the band a robust, deceptively simple, and consistently devastating mix.
Ultimately, "Damned In Black" proves that this Norwegian trio prays only to their armor-clad, bullet-belted Metal muse. While it will most likely be overlooked considering Immortal's brightest and deadliest moments came before and after it (respectively), "Damned In Black" proves to be just as powerful as anything else in the band's increasingly impressive canon!!

Since 1991, Immortal did a great job proving that they were amongst the best Black Metallers out there. Starting with their "frostbitten" formula and then exposing a Thrashier side, they never failed to amaze us. "Battles In The North", "At The Heart Of Winter" and all of their grim efforts across the years were always satisfying, strong and at times mind boggling. Now, let us go back in time, and revisit the event that sparked this chain of awesomeness, the album that brought to birth one of the most noteworthy Black Metal acts on earth: "Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism".
Back in the year 1991, when many bands were still grasping the concept of Black Metal, Immortal were writing some solid Black Metal. Despite their young age, they succeed in delivering a mature-sounding work. Demonaz's riffing is very tight, and not usually breaking the evil-sounding tremolo rule. The chainsaw-like riffs are fast, angry and relentless. The low frequencies are very masterfully covered by Abbath's heavy bass lines. This is one of those old Black Metal albums where the bass keeps rumbling all the time. The drumming, on the other hand, is very typical for a Black Metal album, but "Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism" was released in 1991, so it is quite normal for the drumming to consist of nothing but constant blasting. On the top of the well-performed instrumentals come the vocals, which are less croaky than usual Abbath vocals, but loads more scary and disturbing, especially that screech in "Unholy Forces Of Evil". Acoustic guitars are frequently used, and keyboards dominate near the end of "A Perfect Vision Of The Rising Northland". But what makes the experience of album unforgettable is the devilish guitar solos and leads here and there. It seems that Demonaz wrote some typical solos, changed some notes, twisted the overall sound and added some warped craze in order to create those solos of his. Mind blowing stuff!
This is an underrated Raw Black Metal jewel, and it is often overlooked by the fans of the genre. If you like Black Metal, grab this as soon as possible!! The evil, harsh atmosphere will undeniably be to your immense liking!!!

While Abbath was able to leave Immortal after the famously way-too-long-and-drawn-out dissolution of the band to quickly find success on his own, his former partner from the cold and distant lands of Blashyrkh has had a rougher time climbing to the peak of the snowcapped mountains. In fact, Demonaz has enjoyed only a small fraction of the limelight since sailing off without his once long-standing counterpart. While legally maintaining the rights to the use of the name "Immortal" for some time now, Demonaz hasn't really made the most of the moniker. That, however, changes now with "War Against All". This is a record that is undoubtedly worthy of the Immortal brand. This is the Immortal record we were waiting for. Eight really solid songs that unabashedly emulate the glory days of the band. "War Against All" is a must-have for any Immortal fan!

The seventh full-length studio album by legendary Finnish Thrash/Black Metal band.
With the "Nihil" album, we could already notice a more polished style and music from Impaled Nazarene, because of the new guitarist on that album, Alexi Laiho. He brought with it many influences from the Melodic Metal he used to play with Children Of Bodom, especially on the lead guitars lines, while the rest was still quite brutal but with signs of change. To the always-present brutality by this band, there has now opposed a more care for the structures.
"Absence Of War Does Not Mean Peace" continues this way with more Thrashy riffs and an eye to the melody. The time of the pure Speed and Rawness seems quite far now even if the band has never forgotten the roots. Album welcomes us with blasting production that gives power and relevance to each instrument. The tempo is generally quite fast but the melody on the riffs is always present to make the whole song quite catchy too. The screams by Mika are always nasty but in some parts they are not like in the past, suffering a bit the steps of time.
Overall, this album will surely divide the new and the old fans of this band. The progression continues and the melodies are now far more important for Impaled Nazarene. However, the album is quite good even if it’s far from the sheer brutality of the early works but it’s always fast, just with an eye to the melody.
Although "Absence Of War" marks a rather distinct departure from their Black Metal roots, and positively reeks of Power Metal with a lot of the riffs, it is undeniably a Black Metal album through and through, and anyone who says otherwise has obviously never listened to it more than once. Moreover, it's highly recommended picking for anyone with even a remote interest in Extreme music of any sort. Even non-fans of Black Metal should be able to appreciate this gem!

With the "Nihil" album, we could already notice a more polished style and music from Impaled Nazarene, because of the new guitarist on that album, Alexi Laiho. He brought with it many influences from the Melodic Metal he used to play with Children Of Bodom, especially on the lead guitars lines, while the rest was still quite brutal but with signs of change. To the always-present brutality by this band, there has now opposed a more care for the structures.
"Absence Of War Does Not Mean Peace" continues this way with more Thrashy riffs and an eye to the melody. The time of the pure Speed and Rawness seems quite far now even if the band has never forgotten the roots. Album welcomes us with blasting production that gives power and relevance to each instrument. The tempo is generally quite fast but the melody on the riffs is always present to make the whole song quite catchy too. The screams by Mika are always nasty but in some parts they are not like in the past, suffering a bit the steps of time.
Overall, this album will surely divide the new and the old fans of this band. The progression continues and the melodies are now far more important for Impaled Nazarene. However, the album is quite good even if it’s far from the sheer brutality of the early works but it’s always fast, just with an eye to the melody.
Although "Absence Of War" marks a rather distinct departure from their Black Metal roots, and positively reeks of Power Metal with a lot of the riffs, it is undeniably a Black Metal album through and through, and anyone who says otherwise has obviously never listened to it more than once. Moreover, it's highly recommended picking for anyone with even a remote interest in Extreme music of any sort. Even non-fans of Black Metal should be able to appreciate this gem!

The magnanimous gravity of “Ugra Karma” can’t be felt for most of the time, as the Cyber Black Metal grandeur of that album is really hard to repeat. But the band do their best to sound relevant and up-to-date, and to tell the truth this effort isn’t such a big step back with admirable attempts at diversity which some may have taken as new trajectories sketched, to be explored in the future. In fact, the album served a template that the guys have been following steadfastly for over twenty years now, sometimes trying to touch their “Karmic” masterpiece.
Luttinen and his ever-reliant team have no reasons whatsoever to worry about their voluminous discography; they’ve been doing really well raising the flag of Finnish Metal all the way from Heaven to Kingdom Come!

Back from the crypt to release their 7th full length on the unsuspecting masses is Bill Lindsey and his undead crew of murder and mayhem which this time around includes original bass player Commander Court Hawley and also special guest, original guitar player Mike Torok. With such a band of scallywags in tow “Habeas Corpus” should be an especially bloody and murderous event.
“Angel of Misery” kicks off the disc in typical Impaler fashion. Their Punk infused sound is not exactly in vogue today but back in the early 80's these guys were something new and different and their lives shows must have been something to behold. Today with video games and movies continually pushing the boundaries blood, gore and violence is nothing new but at the time of Impaler’s inception horror movies were still scary and Impalers bloody shows could still shock. “Hatbox Ghost” is something a little different for Impaler as it has more of Thrash feel to it than the Punkish sound that is usually part of their repertoire. The CD closes out with special guest Mike Torok on guitar and the track “World Insane”. This is by far the strongest track on the CD. It has a strong guitar sound which is just a bit meatier than what the band usually uses and Torok’s playing is more varied and leans a little bit more towards the metal realm compared with Bradley J.
Again Impaler delivers 11 songs that are sure to quench (or inflame) the bloodlust of their many fans. Even though this is only their 7th CD, Impaler has released numerous E.P.s, Bloody Bill Lindsey has managed to keep the band and its sound focused on what they do best. That is creating blood soaked anthems that try to touch that dark place in us all!

This re-release has expanded liner notes by Stevo, two extra live songs, renewed artwork, and many rare pictures in a 24-page booklet.
A truly Gore masterpiece, everything about it reeks of a B grade zombie movie. A classic piece of Death Metal/Grindcore!

The tenth full-length album by the cult German Folk Metal/Rock band.
With this release, In Extremo present us another milestone of their creative work so far. So there's really no faulting a band for sticking to a formula if it is a winner. "Sterneneisen" is not really different from In Extremo's previous record but the guys continue to hone their songwriting skills, delivering a set of scorching Heavy Rock hits with the best of them.
The bagpipes ensure the tunes are never going to make it to a modern Rock radio, but it's the radio's loss - "Sterneneisen" may not be hip, but it's dead catchy! It's not kitschy, too, at least not embarrassingly. They've streamlined their sound, too - they've even stopped showing off by singing in half a dozen languages (except "Zauberspruch No. VII"), and the Folk element is also mostly limited to said bagpipes, leaving the quasi-Industrial guitars to carry the songs by barraging the audience with simple but killer riffs (some Sisters Of Mercy Synths Pop up in the background, too). There is less filler than ever, and through the band mostly romps at one speed, the songs are focused and hook-laden enough to ensure that dynamics are not a problem. Even the slower numbers don't drag this time (and are less in number), and the optimistic and larger-than-life "Hol die Sterne" sounds like almost like a minor experiment, and a successful one. The terrific Teutonic singing helps, too: Das Letzte Einhorn is, despite the silly alias ("The Last Unicorn"), one of strongest vocalists in contemporary Rock, and his bandmates don't fail him on gang choruses.
In Extremo may be on the road to becoming the Folk Metal AC/DC with "Sterneneisen", but as long as they keep up with their own standards, they just might get away with it.

Having relentlessly toured the globe for their previous two releases, In Flames has rocked concert joints everywhere, and where better to record a show than the Land of the Rising Sun (more like the land of the super-appreciative Metal fan). So that's what we get. Fifteen pure, bad-assed tracks recorded live in Tokyo!!
If you have never seen In Flames live before there's something you need to know before listening: the band's sound is somewhat different than you might expect. Gone is the Studio Fredman polish as well as a lot of the softer portions on their discs. Just like any other good Metal band in concert, these guys are really out to do some damage. The best part is that the raw, bare sound suits the music very well. The live version of "Jotun" is much more aggressive than on "Whoracle", "Clayman" has new charm, and the "Raining Blood" riff thrown into the middle of "Scorn" is just as cool as the crowd seems to think!
If you have seen In Flames on their "Clayman" tours, you will likely be familiar with the set list but there are a few surprises in the Tokyo show. The first is that they play "Gyroscope" and though it comes off sounding good, it seems odd for the show. Speaking of incongruous, the second surprise is that they play "Swim".
Recorded during the Japan Tour in November 2000 at show in Tokyo. Produced and mixed at Studio Fredman in Spring 2001.
During their performance of "Scorn" band incorporated the opening riffs of Slayer's "Raining Blood". The album title was inspired by the action film "Showdown in Little Tokyo".

First official release of the debut full-length album by Australian Thrash Metal band.
It's been a long three years since Melbourne based Thrash act released their promising debut E.P. effort "Blackened Skies", but after some unforseen delays and frustrating setbacks (the trials and tribulations of the band's recording sessions are well documented in the booklet's liner notes), In Malice's Wake have finally returned with their highly anticipated full-length debut "Eternal Nightfall".
The album starts with an “Intro” and smoothly sails into the second song “Pay the Price” with the same tune and riffage creating the required anticipatory juices in the listener’s minds! The music is simple Technical Thrash Metal with cheesy solos here and there backed by excellent screaming vocals by Shaun Farrugia. The title track “Eternal Nightfall” is your quintessential Thrash anthem just pounding in your face, with those slight Punkish drum work. “Bitter Demise” continuous in similar sharp riffs, slightly groovy, but enough variety to keep you interested. With “To Run with the Darkness…” the sound seems to get chaotic during the vocals part, but with sharp riffs the music sounds as sweet as mere words can’t describe. The solos are really screaming out to get your attention, largely thanks to the guitarists’ innovativeness and it simply works right away, as most importantly they are not overdone. “Man-Made Death” brings in some signature riffs only In Malice's Wake could have brought in and packs so much just under 4 minutes, makes the listener’s time really worth it. “Weakness in Numbers” combines a bit old school Traditional Heavy Metal with raw Thrash Metal that so many bands have tried and failed, but these boys get it right. Just when you think that the album is unidirectional in its high tempo aggressive Thrash, “Where Silence Hides (Instrumental)” pops in with its mid-tempo, rather slow instrumental. The original album ended with an excellent epic Thrash anthem in “Mental Disarray”.
Official re-release features "Blackened Skies" EP 2005 as a bonus, which is actually pretty cool, as we get to listen to 2 records in 1 pack!! This section of the record, i.e. the EP part seems to have more chaotic song structure compared to the original album part, but still packs enough meet to keep the fire going. “To Run with the Darkness” is another brutal Thrash anthem, as the band still manages have enough variety and flavor to get your attention. “As Dusk Covers Day” and “Weakness in Numbers” sound more like Part 1 and Part 2 of the same song as they have similar riffs with extensive song writing, but all good in books at the end of the day.
All in all, this re-release is a must pick up for new In Malice's Wake fans as it will expose them to one of the best modern Thrash Metal acts that Australia has put in recent years. This is simply Thrash beauty at its beast!!

Speed, anger and aggression seem to be the watchwords for Melbourne Thrashers In Malice’s Wake. The third full length offering from the Aussie four-piece continues in their vein of turbo-charged Thrash Metal.
“Light Upon the Wicked” is full of incredibly high speed riffs, and heavy breaks, all set behind guttural vocals which aren’t quite sung, but not quite shouted… There are more melodic sections, which appear from time to time; but don’t expect them to come with any slowing down of the pace. From the moment instrumental intro “Onward Human Suffering” kicks off, these guys are at full pace- grabbing the listener by the throat and not letting go.
Guitar solos are brief and fast-paced with no real space for extended technical flourishes but here that doesn’t seem to be a problem, as extended sections would detract from the pace.
If you want a well-written, incredibly tight, high-speed aural assault full of anger to blow out your speakers with, In Malice’s Wake have produced one of the best Underground Thrash Metal albums for a while. The intensity of the pace and the energy mixed with their occasional melodic sensibility suggest that it’s only a matter of time before these guys smash their way out of Australia and start making waves elsewhere as well!
