It’s been roughly 30 years since Danish Thrash Metal progenitors Artillery released albums like "Fear Of Tomorrow" and "Terror Squad" to critical acclaim, touring with bands like Slayer and King Diamond. After enduring as many line-ups as they had labels, as well as long periods of dormancy as if the band were some Scandinavian volcano, brothers and founding members, guitarists Michael and Morten Stützer, say they are stoked for not only Artillery’s latest 11 songs, but also for making music, touring, and sharing the excitement with their fans. Now, fronted by singer Michael Bastholm Dahl, powered by the rhythm section battery of bassist Peter Thorslund and drummer Josua Madsen, the brothers say they think they’re at the top of their technical, melodic, brutal Metal game.
"Penalty By Perception" is a fantastic album, and it’s done this simply by being what it is: eleven terrific songs, one after the other. This is an album, that will appeal to hardcore and casual Thrashers alike, but even non-Metalheads will find something to enjoy. The songs are terrific, the production is top-notch, and while they won’t win any points for originality, the sheer enthusiasm is obvious even on the first listen. Thrash Metal has a tendency to get a bit one-dimensional sometimes, and while all of these songs are unmistakably the product of the same band, they still squeeze in a surprising amount of variety. If you count yourself as a true Thrash connoisseur, this one is a must-have!

Flemming Rönsdorf seems to have a strong affinity to stimulants of any kind. Rönsdorf's vocals reflect the manic songwriting to a much greater degree this time around. Previously wavering between indecisive operatic and some middle-of-the-road rasps, now Rönsdorf catapults his screams skyward and stays there for the duration. From time to time, he sounds like being in danger of going insane. Be that as it may, his performance is fantastic. He presents every line with utter conviction and covers a broad spectrum of tones.
Without making any kind of compromise, the guitarists create an inferno of almost 40 minutes. They shape songs that are very well-balanced between primitiveness and complexity. No tune falls by the wayside. An appropriate amount of tempo changes guarantees the lively appearance of the tunes. The variety of the riffs also prevents any kind of boredom.
Artillery perform an independent form of Thrash Metal. It can be excluded that the American Thrash pioneers have not been an inspiration for the Danish "Terror Squad". But the band members do not reveal their exact influences. The riffs cannot be described as filigree or elastic so that the Bay Area does not arise before your inner eye. Perhaps because of the geographical proximity, the guys are closer to the relatively rumbling approach of some German formations. But at the end of the day, "Terror Squad" does not need a strong shoulder to lean on. It stands on its own feet and great tracks such as "Therapy" with its somewhat weird riffs, the thunderous title track or the roaring "In the Trash" justify the high rating!
In 1864 the Danish army was defeated by an alliance of the military forces of Prussia and Austria. It seems as if the defenders did not have effective cannons in order to keep the attackers under control. Worse still, it took more than 120 years before the Kingdom of Denmark had a powerful artillery. Well, its gunners were obviously born too late, and they were not really martial. But this kind of artillery definitely shook the European Thrash Metal scene sustainably!!

The band relies on a drum computer to lay down the beats for their depiction of the human downfall, but it all adds to the somewhat industrial metal feel they were aiming for. Reinier Schenk of Shumcot Studios helped them out with the mixing and mastering of the album and once more the production manages to capture that specific atmosphere we have come to expect from obscure black metal bands. However no lo-fi production this time, but a clear and somewhat filthy caption of what these lads are capable of. And they are capable of a lot, if you only open your mind for it. For who can see past the demo-ish production, samples and drum programming, there is more to see!
This debut is amongst the best Black Metal in 2011 and the rather dismal production makes it worthwhile!!

The band maintains a certain kind of chilling atmosphere throughout the songs and keeps it like that, without over-trying or experimenting at parts. The whole album revolves a lot around Depressive Black characteristics, without actually embracing them so that one would call them a DSBM band. Think of a bands similar to Kaltetod but a bit inferior to it, caressing both Atmospheric and Raw Black at the same time, while heavily depending on the fuzzy and cold sound of the guitars and and the howling vocals. The drums follow an ordinary playing and they don't make a huge difference to the feeling of the album, as the over-buzzed sound of the guitars, aiming for a sense of isolation and despair, are betrayed by the weak riffs and melodies of the songs.
This will appeal to anyone inside and outside the genre!

Astonishingly, the fiery rampage of Asomvel’s Metal-Punk-Rock’n'Roll masterpiece "Knuckle Duster" marks 20 years since these British bruisers first started jamming on a pig farm with a load of Special Brew. Formed in 1993 by guitarist Lenny Robinson and bassist/vocalist Jay-Jay Winter, Asomvel’s first drummer was ex-Cathedral/Acid Reign man Mark Wharton, but “about ten” more came and went before the band recorded their first demo in 2001. After 2007′s "Full Moon Dog" 10″ the power trio managed to thrash out their raucous debut LP "Kamikaze" in 2009 to much acclaim, Asomvel firmly establishing themselves as underdog cult heroes of the UK Heavy Metal underground. Barely a year later, however, the band was shaken to its core when Jay-Jay Winter was killed in a road accident. Although a devastating tragedy, Lenny knew that the band had to continue in tribute to the determined spirit of their founding frontman.
With ex-Deathwing bassist/vocalist Conan onboard, Asomvel headlined their own inaugural Full Moon Dog Festival in Bradford in 2011 in honour of their fallen comrade, and have shared the stage with the likes of Carcass, Anvil and Orange Goblin.
When Will Palmer started up Bad Omen Records in 2013, his formative ambition was to coax a new album out of Asomvel, sending them into the studio with producer James ‘Atko’ Atkinson. "Knuckle Duster" is perhaps the band’s most vital and complete release to date.
The album kicks off with “Dead Set On Living”, a storm of drums and heavy guitar riffs, with a very British, very Traditional Metal sound. “Trash Talker” is a foot stomping, head banging romp while “Sheep In Wolf's Clothing” and “Cash Whore” both quicken the pace and rattle along at speed with some very good guitar work. Slowing the pace down to near Doom Metal tempo is “Waster”, a heavy riff driven song that chugs relentlessly to a conclusion. “Shoot Ya Down” is a classic traditional Heavy Metal song with title track “Knuckle Duster” sounding raw and aggressive. “Wrecking Ball” chugs by with an awesome guitar riff and the pace is upped as “Final Hour” flies by in a flurry of guitar and drums. The quickest (and shortest) song on the album is “Stranglehold” which has power and pace, as it hurtles by in just one minute forty eight seconds. Final song is “Hangman's Rope”, yet another example of everything that British Heavy Metal stands for.
Overall, traditional British Heavy Metal at its bombastic best! Thunderous drums and bass, blistering guitar solos and powerful vocals, all guaranteed to keep your head banging!!

Intended as a first Asphyx album, recorded in 1990, it was never released until 1996. "Embrace The Death" should have been released on CMFT Productions, but the label went bankrupt and this wasn't released. In 1996, Century Media Records eventually released this album, including the "Mutilating Process" EP, after they're acquired the rights for the album (Asphyx had already split up at that time).
This album is an early testament to the brutal, raw sound the band is known for. The album shows the essence of Death Metal in its purest and unfiltered form. The production, although crude, perfectly captures the oppressive and sombre atmosphere. Characterized by heavy, gut-wrenching riffs, deep guttural vocals, and a crushing rhythm section, "Embrace The Death" is a journey into the darker, heavier side of Metal.
This album is essential for any Extreme Metal fan looking to understand the roots and evolution of Death Metal. The cult around this band is remarkable. Being the only album without guitarist Eric Daniels (who had just disbanded a totally different incarnation of Asphyx with Ron van Pol and Sander van Hoof), this album was written and recorded by original drummer Bob Bachus, who rejoin the band, and demo bass player-vocalist Theo Loomans, drafted by Bob as the new frontman, who also played guitar this time. Although DeadHead guitarist Ronnie Vanderwey credited as providing guitars on this album, in fact he only played live with the band, and they were actually performed by Theo Loomans. Sadly, Loomans would pass away in a vehicular accident not long after the album's release, leaving this his one and only appearance with the band.
Whereas Asphyx normally included huge amounts of Doom on their albums, this was almost totally absent on "God Cries", giving the impression this could hardly have been called a regular Asphyx album.
The album is a short, straight forward and fast piece of Death Metal with some Thrash Metal riffs thrown in. Catchy tunes with high standard riffing and one of the best drumming performances from Bob Bachus in his entire Asphyx career. And Theo Loomans turned out to be a gifted instrumentalist and composer.

Quickly following up their bludgeoning debut, "The Rack", Asphyx wasted no time writing and recording its follow-up, "Last One On Earth", which was released in 1992.
Further refining their craft, Eric Daniels comes up with some of his best riffs, while Martin van Drunen's tortured howls sound altogether otherworldly.
Martin van Drunen recorded the vocals alone in the studio without realizing he had already been removed from the band. The vocals were intended to be recorded by Ron van Pol. However, the other members of Asphyx thought the vocal tracks were fine with van Drunen singing, so they decided to keep them. Since the lyrics to be sung by van Pol had not been written yet, van Drunen's lyrics were also kept.
This special edition features a remixed & remastered version of the album and includes bonus material from their "Crush The Cenotaph" EP (tracks 9-10), two live songs, and their entire "Promo '91" demo (tracks 14-16).

Not even their unofficial split in 1996, which was preceded by a reincarnation under the name of Soulburn in 1998, diminished the proud following of Underground maniacs that Asphyx had.
"On The Wings Of Inferno" is a no-fillers masterpiece, which features nine new infernal hymns of the band’s well-known pulverizing midtempo riffs, a crushing Doom edge to it, as well as demonic speed-ups, which never lack in neither catchiness nor brutality.
The band regained some focus on this album, the old dark, Doom-infused sound, and added a major new player in Wannes Gubbels, who also sings for Pentacle and contributed greatly to the success of their excellent "Under The Black Cross" album. His voice is as exceptional here as it is for Pentacle, a growling crossbreed of John Tardy and previous Asphyx singer Martin van Drunen.
Add some terrific cover art, and this is a release you shouldn't miss - even if you did when it first came out.
Short after its release, Asphyx disbanded again, and "On The Wings Of Inferno" would be their final studio album until they reunited in 2007 and released the seventh album, "Death… The Brutal Way", in 2009.

Assailant is one of the most promising Thrash Metal bands from Latin America. Hailing from Heredia in Costa Rica, this is not the most common home for quality Thrash Metal, but this release speaks for itself as for the music scene in Costa Rica, too. Playing slightly Technical, Bay Area-influenced Thrash (though far from being called Progressive), the band performs some well-structured Thrash tunes with catchy riffs and aggressive vocals with a hint of Slayer.
The complete album gets some extra charme by not having a clean, polished production, but a perfectly fitting raw sound.
This release is a re-issue of the strictly limited 2012 demo (which had only 150 copies), remastered and with added bonus-material (2 live & 2 rehearsal tracks) as well as a bigger booklet with more pics and information. Though this release comes with remastered sound, the raw character of the music is kept intact.
A very decent CD by a promising band that surely will make a really kick ass full length in a future!!

Selfreleased before, now this 55-minute epic has more than enough depth to keep somebody engaged for almost an hour with this release.
Instead of taking the traditional instrumental intro, “Unrelieved Solitude” opens up with some very creepy whispers and screams accompanied by distorted guitars. The atmospheric synths are again overpowering and very nicely set a creepy vibe. Having more ‘time limit’ freedom, the songs in this release are slower to develop, but always having very interesting and melancholic passages, like on “Kingdom of White Madness” and the minimalistic instrumental “Voices from the Night Sky”.
“Farewell (Last Winter)” is one of our favorite tracks in this release thanks to its very dramatic atmosphere and emotional tempo changes. This track has a very intense Doom/Suicidal BM vibe that is very easily achieved by Astarium’s skills. After the interlude “Velleity About Aeonian Rain” we get another excellent song that starts with eerie wind sounds. The harsh vocals are quite fitting in the band’s sound and they greatly enhance the creepiness of the band’s music.
The album’s original closing track is the cavernous “When Humanity will Die…” - a very bleak song that starts with some intense droning sounds. This song evolves very slowly and allows the agony to be extended.
This version of the album has a bonus track titled “Permafrost”, which is a very upbeat and enjoyable cover of Krah.
“Wyrm Of Melancholy” is one hell of a release that will please any fan of this very engaging genre. If you like your music to be highly Atmospheric and have some BM-shrieks in it, look no further and get yourself a copy of this album!!

Perfect mix of Death/Doom and Gothic with Progressive Metal.
Pure old school Doom-style with guttural and deep voices with a heavy, crushing drums, guitar riffs, acoustic structures that can be described as Epic or Medieval look, even mythological, using these acoustic or percussion, crystal clear sound and clean vocals parts. It's remembering some old Tiamat in his episode "Wildhoney" and so on, as well as Pungent Stench, Therion (but without the opera), of course at its own way of expression and its own innovative and interesting proposal.
"Zerzura" is an idea developed by the band over a long mythological journey based on "The Book of One Thousand and One Nights", Arabian tales of medieval Middle East, hence the influential epic / Arabic ambience. The word that gives name to this album is the name of the legendary lost city of Zerzura.
Atmospheric sound and obscures melodies, an interesting travel to the unknown world of Zerzura. Excellent album!!
