The third re-release of the debut full-length studio album by legendary German Heavy Metal band.
Originally released by Mausoleum Records, it was re-released by Vertigo Records, which went on to release all future Warlock albums.
Warlock was another of the many female-fronted bands that have recently burst onto the Heavy Metal scene. But after listening to "Burning The Witches", it’s obvious that these Germans are far superior to their American counterparts, such as Hellion and Bitch.
The band was fronted by the beautiful and now legendary Dorothee Pesch. Ms. Pesch’s vocals are equally as stunning as her looks, ranging from the Geddy Lee-like vocals (à la Acid’s Kate) on the album’s excellent opening cut "Sign Of Satan" to the more raunchy Jody Turner-style on "Homicide Rocker".
Musically, the band matches the excellence of their vocalist’s talents, producing a tight often melodic sound which reminds somewhat of that great debut album from Canada’s Reckless (1981).
This album is full of high quality numbers such as "After The Bomb", "Dark Fade", "Metal Racer" and the title track. But they are far more devastating with their more uptempo material like the superb "Hateful Guy".
Warlock's debut album is quite far from where the band reached with "Triumph And Steel", but still gives the listener a quite intense Hard'n'Heavy experience although the production on the album is rather thin as for the sound. Good riffs and some good melodies and harmonies in a good balance. In a way this is rather raw Heavy Metal, but it's the one of the classic albums in history of whole Metal!!

On this release band began evolving their sound slightly away from that style and towards something a bit more mainstream. “True as Steel” is sort of a mixture of older guard aggressive Heavy Metal and the Glam style that was really growing in prominence at this point in the 80s. You can hear bits and pieces of Dokken, Quiet Riot, and even a little bit of early Riot (pre-Thundersteel). There is a larger emphasis on sing along choruses, much as is the case on the next release “Triumph and Agony”. It still, however, holds onto a good deal of the Speed Metal elements that were heard on “Burning the Witches” and the very heavy “Hellbound”. The resulting mix of styles is a very interesting listen.
This album has their first success outside of Europe, the single "Fight for Rock" charted on Billboard, and the music video for this song was aired on MTV's Headbangers Ball.

"Trouble" was the album, that setting the template for virtually all the band's ensuing career, pre-1987 American sell-out. This followed the 4-track EP "Snakebite", later available in the US as an import album from continental Europe.
"Trouble" was a band made up of seasoned veterans, after all, and they knew exactly what it was they wanted: edgy Hard Rock based on R&B. They also knew who was boss: Coverdale, who after enduring a minority stake in the mighty Deep Purple, was now clearly established as top dog and de facto leader of the new outfit. And what a slick, powerful outfit it was, too, with guitarists Marsden and Micky Moody compensating whatever visual shortcomings they may have had with their rock-solid six-string partnership, and former Deep Purple organist Jon Lord (for the first time in Whitesnake line-up) holding it all together in the back.
"Trouble" turned out to be the first step in a long, and very successful career. The album reached No. 50 on the UK Albums Chart when it was released in October 1978.

The first difference is the track order, which is very different. The album seems to flow a little better the way it is presented here, especially when utilizing "Still of the Night" as the opening track. This has always been one of their best songs, and by far one of the best Led Zeppelin rip-offs to ever be written. There are also two more songs than on the American release, making it that much more essential to fans. Of the two, "Looking for Love" is the standout; a nice slow build to a blustery chorus makes this a classic David Coverdale ballad. "You're Gonna Break My Heart Again" is the hard rocker, and though it isn't exactly the holy grail of Hard Rock, it is a decent song that fits nicely with the other material here. If the option is presented, this is the superior edition and should be purchased above the edited American version. Fans will need the two extra songs, while anyone looking to hear their best album should hunt this down for the superior track order!

David Coverdale built Whitesnake's commercial breakthrough on a collection of loud, polished Hard Rockers, plus the band's best set of Pop hooks. The Led Zeppelin-ish "Still of the Night" offered headbanger appeal, but it was the big chorus of "Here I Go Again" - one of the very small number of non-power ballad '80s Hard Rock singles to actually top the Pop charts, and the quiet ballad "Is This Love" that really sold the album in spades. The rest of the album generally holds interest as well, and it's easily the band's best!!
The album was a major crossover hit eventually selling over eight million copies in the US (and thus going 8 times Platinum). The album peaked at #2 on US Billboard 200, and #8 on the UK Albums Chart. Its success in the US boosted its predecessor, "Slide It In", from Gold to double Platinum status.

Originally released on 30 January 1984 in Europe, by Liberty/EMI, the album was remixed for the American market, later issued on 16 April 1984 in North America by Geffen. In Japan, it was issued a "European" Mix release date on 23 March 1984, and an "American" remix on 21 December 1984 by CBS/Sony. Widely regarded as a moderate success, it helped the American market to open up for the band's sound and breakthrough throughout the later 1980s.
Two different editions of the album exist, each with its own unique qualities. The original "European" mix was criticized as "flat" sounding, while the "American" remixed version compromises a more modern approach, giving Whitesnake the "voice" that it wanted. The remix ultimately marked a change in the band's sound, closer to the American Glam Metal Rock scene.
This version features some different guitar solos to the European edition, with the addition of John Sykes as a third guitarist layered on top of the original guitar parts recorded by Mel Galley and Micky Moody. The original bass guitar parts recorded by Colin Hodgkinson were completely replaced by returning member Neil Murray's bass guitar parts on this version and it also includes some new keyboard parts by Bill Cuomo, differing from the original recording.

And what a slick, powerful outfit it was, too, with guitarists Marsden and Micky Moody compensating whatever visual shortcomings they may have had with their rock-solid six-string partnership, and former Deep Purple organist Jon Lord (for the first time in Whitesnake line-up) holding it all together in the back.
"Trouble" turned out to be the first step in a long, and very successful career. The album reached No. 50 on the UK Albums Chart when it was released in October 1978.
