Old-school Thrash Metal with a modern production! Band got a hell of a lot more pedigree than a lot of people realize. After hitting the scene during the first wave of Teutonic Thrash Metal, alongside their more famous contemporaries Destruction and Kreator, these guys seemed to fade very quickly into near-total obscurity. They all had solid label backing, played nationwide tours and full-colour advertisements for their records were to be seen in all the Metal papers of the day. But what about Necronomicon? Necronomicon had had the same luck as the above mentioned three in signing a deal with one of the prominent German labels in the mid-‘80’s. But instead of securing a deal with Steamhammer (like Sodom and Destruction), Noise (Kreator) or even Roadrunner, Necronomicon ended up with... Wave Records. A very obscure label with a very obscure name. Wave Records was something like the distribution arm of Gama Records or at least that’s how they wanted to make it look like to the public. Gama always was a very dodgy label, ripping off bands left, right and centre and that was one of their ways to cheat people for their money. Signing to Gama was a very bad choice.
Necronomicon was loved internationally, especially in all Scandinavian countries, USA and South America. Back in the ‘80’s, fanzines were all over the place, and they wrote about the band on a regular basis. This was different in Germany, but it has only changed over the last couple of years – ironically.
In 1988, it seemed the end of the road for Necronomion had come (after only three albums). Band definitely needed to part ways with Gama. But Gama held the rights to all the songs, to band's name, to just about everything. Musicians were practically forced to do nothing at all or change their name (which band did not want to do). So, they had to sit through all this, doing nothing. For the band, there was only one question: are they gonna wait until eternity to put out another Necronomicon album or do they take the risk to get sued by Gama? At this point in time, band got the news that Gama was filing for bankruptcy. So, guys took the risk to record a new album... In 1994, the fourth longplay, “Screams”, was released on CD via D&S Records. Unfortunately, band's liaison with D&S was not very enduring either. It was a rocky way for Necronomicon up until the present day...
Luckily, the rights to the songs had reverted to the band. An odyssey of uncertainty and suffering has come to and end. The present for Necronomicon marks the deluxe re-release of their legendary debut, by many fans still regarded as one the greatest German Thrash Metal records in history.
This album is a fu***ng piece of violent and brutal German Thrash Metal, it has all what an adept of 80s European Thrash Metal want in an album. The first thing that catch our attention when listening the album is the unique sound quality, not quality-wise but rather in rawness, because the album has a somewhat "Punkish" sound on it, which is a pretty damn cool thing! The songwriting on the album is great, they had a lot of great ideas for sure. The musicianship on the album is far from top-notch, but it's still great enough to enjoy everything that is played, especially for a first effort. The mix on the album is pretty much what you would expect from a record with that production work. The main focus on the album is the guitars, because they are somewhat higher in the mix than the other instruments. But in general, the mix is pretty good. The guitar sound has sometimes been compared to that of the mighty (early) Celtic Frost. Volker also had that ultimate crunch in his guitar playing. The drums are well-performed, using basic Thrash technic. The vocals of Freddy are basically a worship of Schmier, they have a really similar tone (which is a good thing for Destruction's fans). Another interesting thing on the album is the kind of riffs we have. Yes, the type of riffs are similar to those of Destruction, but Necronomicon made great additions to it, by expanding even more what they did before. You will also hear the typical fancy guitar solos like in Destruction. The most popular song is indeed "Possessed by Evil", which is a unique original piece of the German Thrash scene and is mainly considered a classic.
Overall, this is not the catchiest album ever, but songs like "Blind Destruction" or "Iron Charm" has solid choruses, this is the kind of songs that will get stuck in your head for a bit of time. There's no bad tracks on this album at all, each track have their great moments and killer riffs! It's obviously recommend people to give the album a few listens. This is the kind of album that needs to grow in you before appreciating its evil art, but once you're into it, you will dig it and see its catchiness. If you're a 80s German Thrash Metal fan, especially fan of Destruction, then you need to look up to it!! This is an undeniable classic German Thrash Metal album!!!

The most popular song is indeed "Possessed by Evil", which is a unique original piece of the German Thrash scene and is mainly considered a classic.
Overall, this is not the catchiest album ever, but songs like "Blind Destruction" or "Iron Charm" has solid choruses, this is the kind of songs that will get stuck in your head for a bit of time. There's no bad tracks on this album at all, each track have their great moments and killer riffs! It's obviously recommend people to give the album a few listens. This is the kind of album that needs to grow in you before appreciating its evil art, but once you're into it, you will dig it and see its catchiness. If you're a 80s German Thrash Metal fan, especially fan of Destruction, then you need to look up to it!! This is an undeniable classic German Thrash Metal album!!!

The sixth full-length studio album by American Death Metal band.
Vocalist Frank "Killjoy" Pucci, known as the Godfather of Gore Metal, and his companions in Horror are delighting their dedicated and large fan base with the return to a more old school approach to their very own gut-wrenching, brain drilling style of Death Metal. Being ‘born’ back in 1983, Necrophagia is back in business after a 6-year absence. The fourth full-length studio album by cult American Death Metal band.
The man known as Killjoy (R.I.P.) was perhaps one of the most prolific members of the Metal community as far as music projects go. Between The Ravenous, Wurdulak, and Necrophagia, you have three bands obsessed with sickening and Gore based imagery. Though musically, all three bands are different. So where does Necrophagia fit in? Well, on "The Divine Art Of Torture" the band is playing Death Metal, with slight touches of Black Metal here and there. However, by Death Metal standards, this isn’t the fastest or most brutal style, instead the band's sound can be compared to "Heartwork" era Carcass at times. So that same kind of mid-paced, thick riff sound is somewhat present; though with Necrophagia’s own interpretation of it.
Along with Killjoy, is almost a super group of sorts. Killjoy handles the vocals and with him on this album are Iscariah on bass (Wurdulak, ex- Immortal); Frediablo on guitars (Gorelord, Wurdulak); Fug on guitars (Soul Forsaken, Wurdulak); Titta Tani on drums (Daemonia); and the biggest surprise of the bunch: Mirai Kawashima on keys from Japan’s Avant-garde Metal masters, Sigh!
The music has its fast parts, but there are almost no blast beats to be found, so most of the music is based more on the horror atmosphere than speed and aggression. For some, this being a relief, because a lot of people are getting tired of Death Metal bands just playing fast for the sake of being fast. There are still plenty of good neck breaking moments with quality usage of double bass, though, and that classic quick start-stop bass pattern that Carcass used to perfection on "Necrotism" and "Heartwork" is present. The guitars are kind of fuzzy and distorted with a heavy tone.
The band is at their best when they focus on concise and eerie song structures. The apparent eerie atmosphere is due in part to the masterful keyboard work. It’s nothing overly technical, but it’s so simple and effective, that it’s almost brilliant. Forget the circus keys of some Symphonic Black Metal bands, because the keyboard sound varies from song to song and usually adds a very weird texture that accentuates the horror theme of the music. Everyone else does their job well, so it looks the band kept things simple on purpose.
There's quite a chunk of Punk or Hardcore influence, only rather than cultivate a Crust, Sludge or Doom centre, Necrophagia channels it directly into a raw, pummelling Death Metal. Riffs are meaty and atrocious, with a raw, Thrashy and Crunchy tone to the rhythm guitars that does get a bit Noisy in the recording. They do delve into some slower, Groovier, Doomy riffs at points, and there are also some really minimalist, bottom of the barrel sorts of Groove/Nu Metal riffs that they clog up some choruses with. Really, though, while a lot of the riffs can feel creatively bankrupt or flat-out predictable, they do suffice at least as a basis from which to launch the keyboards or other effects, not to mention they are angry, violent and abusive enough to compete with Killjoy's savage, tortured barking, forever the hallmark of this project. Unlike a lot of the faceless hordes of bands that fit snugly into some category, when you hear a Necrophagia tune in a radio line-up, you'll go to be pretty sure of who it is, and that's not a bad position to be in.
A horror guru like few others, Killjoy picks some interesting subjects here, like a tune about the "Parasite Eve" video game, or the "Flowers of Flesh and Blood" episode of the "Guinea Pig" torture-porn series. Not the sort of stuff you expect on your average horror-inspired Death Metal album, which will mine the same old slashers from the 80s, and that much is appreciated here. "The Divine Art Of Torture" is certainly one of the Necrophagia records with the most potential and cool concepts!

First release on CD of the debut mini-album by the Russian Melodic Black Metal band.
Nefas Terra is a Russian black metal entity consisting of two members, Chad and Klem. "Life In Darkness" contains 6 intense and merciless songs filled with icy riffs and grim vocals as well as a cover of Satyricon's well-known "Mother North".
The title track is a furious affair with a lot of catchy melodies and atmosphere to it while "No Way Out" is slightly more symphonic and epic. The vocals alternate between screeching Black Metal vocals and deep Death Metal-like growls, which adds a bit of diversity to the whole thing. "Early Christianity" is pretty damn aggressive and yet quite varied with some crazy riffing here and there. The drums on the album are programmed, which is quite evident, but luckily they are well done and don`t sound flat or completely lifeless. "Vice" also good song, but "Suicide" is excellent song that contains some captivating and semi-Thrashy riffs as well as some rather melancholic parts - definitely the best song on the disc. "Poison" is pretty average, but the cover version of "Mother North" is pretty raw and necro, which is actually kind of cool in the sense that it is quite different from the original version. Very cool vocals here.
Overall, "Life In Darkness" is hardly what one would call original or innovative, but the songs are generally interesting and well-composed, and Nefas Terra possess a wicked and unholy charm that certain Black Metal bands from Russia simply have. The bottom line is that this is good stuff and should appeal to quite a few of you Black Metal fanatics out there!
