The second full-length album by cult Greek Symphonic Gothic Metal band.
Under the title "Today Died Yesterday" Swan Christy's new album was released in early May.
If there's something that should be made clear about this Athenian band, is that unlike many others of the scene, theirs is a characteristic sound which in no case repeats the standard cliche's; there certainly are influences, such as the piano-based musical forms by Iraklis (piano, synths) that take a bit after Savatage, as well as a few Progressive guitar solos that might as well remind you of Dream Theater. But Swan Christy has their own personal sound - something fundamental for a band nowadays - a sound that could be described as "Symphonic Metal"...
The music of "Today Died Yesterday" is supreme, like in the previous album. With orchestral parts performed by synths, instruments like violin and oboe, additional female vocals and the dominating piano, alternating with heavy, at times harsh guitar riffs and an exceptional bass-playing Swan Christy prove that they are particularly skillful musicians.
The album was among the top Greek releases of the year. Swan Christy has something new to give to the European scene, something out of the ordinary!

Second full-length album by the Salvadorean Power/Thrash Metal band.
Symbolic from El Salvador launching "Portraits of Chaos" are a fine example of what is real gems of Underground.
The last full-length work by these Salvadorans up until today is clear, precise, modern and unconventional in an area in which nobody happens to come up with anything that’s strictly not within the so called Extreme genres, and of course according to most fuckos playing around here, when it comes to Extreme music, the more badass, the better. But the fuct that this release makes it rather refreshing.
These guys play in two teams at the same time: first, the main themes and riffs in almost all songs are based on rapidly picked rhythmic figures inherent in easy to listen Thrash Metal. On the other hand and at the same time, melodies resembling 90s Heavy and Power Metal guitar melodies are also integrated. Take “Shout of Freedom” for instance; it takes off with a furious guitar picking, only to slowly derive into hyper melodic and almost sweet chorus. Make no mistake, everything is well brought together. The guitar solo in this song is a full surrender to melodic metal and it displays a few virtuosity flashes. As it’s almost mandatory for number 2 tracks, the aforementioned song conveys clearly and elegantly the whole concept behind this record.
"Portraits Of Chaos" justifies itself, you don’t need to have a huge name supporting a release for it to have some value. The music is well composed and performed. The final product has been flawlessly made and it sounds great. El Salvador has now an export band in all sense, and for those who can appreciate Melodic Metal as an expression having much to offer, it’s time to restart building up your personal collection as this beast is loudly claiming its place in it!!

The debut and only full-length album by Finnish Power Metal superband.
Timo Tolkki, a name is written in golden pages in the history of Metal. He was the guitarist, main composer for Stratovarius and also sung on their first three albums. Released two personal albums, one Rock Opera named “Saana - Warrior Of Light” and three more with the band Revolution Renaissance not to mention that he is a killer producer capable of creating killer sound. His name is connected with the dawn and rise of Power Metal in the mid to early 90's. Tolkki tried to start from scratch with Revolution Renaissance recruiting musicians that weren't very well known but after three albums this band too came to an abrupt end.
So this time Tolkki decided to recruit some powerful names for his next band (project?). Andre Matos (ex-Angra, Shaman, Viper), the legendary Brazilian singer that sung in monumental albums like “Theater of Fate”, “Angels Cry” and “Holy Land”. The awesome drummer Uli Kusch, who has played and recorded with bands like Mekong Delta, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Masterplan, Holy Moses, etc. Keyboardist Mikko Härkin (ex- Sonata Arctica, Kenziner, etc.). And bass-guitarist Jari Kainulainen, former Tolkki's partner in Stratovarius, and also Masterplan, Devil's Train, Shadowquest, ex- Evergrey, Kotipelto etc. As you can imagine, this is a Power Metal super-group we have before us with names that carry a very successful past yet this also can become a burden when it comes releasing new music.
The album was written by vocalist Andre Matos and guitarist Timo Tolkki (ex-Stratovarius), with the former focusing on lyrics and the latter focusing on the music, and both having some input on each other's parts. The drums were recorded in two days in a separate studio, with the guitars, bass and keyboards being recorded in Helsinki. Work on vocals started on the first day of 2011 in a cabin on top of a mountain where Matos and Tolkki kept isolated with no internet or telephone.
Regarding the music of the album, Matos said: "Symfonia is not supposed to be a band or a project that was meant to reinvent the style. What we wanted was to get all those famous musicians together who somehow had their highlights in this specific musical field and see what comes out of it. See when those people are together, and if they deliver their best, what kind of Power Metal comes out of it.' So this was the proposal of the album, and we never denied it. So if someone came with some criticism like, "But it's more of the same, and it brings nothing new. It just sounds like Stratovarius and Angra". Well, that's exactly what we wanted"...
...And this is the main problem with Symfonia's debut, the band sticks to the same formula that worked wonders for Stratovarius in the past, it gives the impression that the songs sound that way because this is what people would expect from a guy like Timo Tolkki. The songs vary from mid to fast tempo and while there are plenty of anthemic and sing along choruses good leads and fast double base there is absolutely nothing that a fan of Tolkki's work hasn't heard before. In fact, one could characterize the music as Stratovarius with Aangra vocals, but this would be unfair since this album packs a couple of surprises. Songs like “Rhapsody in Black” sounds like an Avantasia composition especially in the chorus. But the real gem i a “In Paradisum” that manages to sound powerful, sad, depressive and at the same time mesmerizing. Andre really shines on this one hitting his famous insane high notes yet at the same time sounds expressive and haunting, bringing to mind his chilling performances from Viper and Angra days. Clearly, a song worthy of these Power Metal pioneers legacies.
Musicianship is up to the high standards one would expect from a band like this, Tolkki's guitar work sounds impressive as ever (just check “In Paradisum” solo) and Uli Kusch gives another powerful performance behind the kit.
The same thing can be said about the production - crystal clear sound crisp and powerful, exactly what one would expected from an experienced producer like Timo Tolkki.
This album isn't a return to the golden days nor it will spark another Power Metal fire like these guys did with their own bands many years ago. It sounds close to their roots but at the same time has a more of the same feel and falls short in inspiration, especially if one would bring the masterpieces of the past to mind. But it's a good album if you're unaware of the previous albums that Tolkki, Matos and Kusch have created, if you're just getting into Metal and will definitely ignite a spark to search for these guys earlier works!

The third full-length studio album by legendary American Thrash/Punk/Rap/Nu Metal band.
In most cases, bands put out these odds and sods collections for die-hard fans, to fulfill a record deal, or to stall while they're taking seven years to record a follow-up. "Steal This Album!", on the other hand, definitely does not fit any of those ideals. System Of A Down has managed to make tracks from a seven-year period sound cohesive without having to embellish or sacrifice. "Steal This Album!" has everything that a "normal" album release would have; it's heavy without being a burden, political without being condescending, and in some cases, downright beautiful.
The best thing about System Of A Down is their sound. The best way to describe it would be to say that they simply do not sound like any other band on this planet. They take Metal, Punk, Pop and just about every other genre ever and fuse them together in a perfect mix to create a Metal album like no other. Serj's powerful voice is fantastic and the amount of vocal techniques he can throw into one song is ridiculous. Daron's guitar playing has been rated by many guitar magazines to be some of the best ever, as for bass player Shavo and drum player John they are also superb veterans of their field. Their sound is unique, incredible, inspiring and as catchy as hell!
The thing about this album, in fact SOAD in general is that they don't compare to any other band on the planet, ever! Focusing on this album which is made up of tracks that System Of A Down decided not to release but in the end did (thank the almighty they did to) it's just the same old System - purely incredible. All the tracks are pretty damn brilliant.
A superb album yet again! It's been mentioned that this is the link to what they've done and what they're moving towards. If that turns out to be true, the next one should be a monster!!
The album was produced by Rick Rubin and Daron Malakian, and reached #15 in the Billboard Top 200.

Second full-length album by the American Nu Metal band.
System Of A Down's 1998 debut was initially overlooked by the mainstream Hard Rock audience, as well as the specialized press. But Heavy Metal cognoscenti in both camps quickly realized that in their hands was a potentially crucial stepping stone for the future development of Heavy Metal. Sure enough, so challenging and groundbreaking were its contents that the album soared over most everyone's unsuspecting heads, its eventual gold sales status only achieved via Columbia Records' massive promotional muscle and nearly three years of intensive touring on the band's part. Consequently, early believers were pleasantly surprised when 2001's long awaited follow-up, "Toxicity" met with instant popular acceptance, skyrocketing up the charts toward multi-Platinum success. Yet, for the most part, it also managed to retained System Of A Down's unorthodox signature sound: so-called "Nu-Metal" uniquely infused with remarkable originality, including angular riffs, jagged rhythms, and oblique lyrics splattered all over the place. Like its predecessor, "Toxicity" seems utterly chaotic upon first listen, but things quickly begin falling into place, thanks to a number of small refinements, not least of which is a more generous melody, obviously pre-meditated, but rarely overdone. In turn, this immediacy greatly improved the album's chances at radio - case in point, first single "Chop Suey!", a track so potent not even September 11, nor mainstream radio's ensuing self-imposed, politically correct attempt at self-censorship, could tear from the airwaves (despite its none-too-discreet lyrics about suicide), the song's surprising success was reminiscent of another left-field hit from a decade earlier, Faith No More's "Epic". And sure enough, from the unexpected false starts of "Prison Song" to the relatively mellow conclusion, the band's heightened commercial sensibility continues to joust with their inherently quirky songwriting. The excellent title track, "Forest," and "Science" are among the most accessible standouts from an incredibly diverse set, the likes of which System Of A Down's inferior Nu-Metal peers could only hope to emulate. Lyrically, it's simply no contest. Whether tackling typical Rock subject matter like drug abuse ("Needles") and groupies ("Psycho"), or embarking on inscrutable Dadaist gems like "Jet Pilot" and "Shimmy," co-songwriters Daron Malakian and Serj Tankain sound like are the bastard children of Frank Zappa and Slayer. And while sub-Rage Against The Machine political invective (unfairly attributed to their Armenian heritage) remains an integral part of the band's creative makeup (e.g. "Deer Dance," "Atwa"), "Toxicity"'s approach is much more cautious in this regard than that of their incendiary debut.
When a band takes this many left turns, you'd expect them to start going in circles sooner rather than later, but this is not the case with System Of A Down. Hands down one of 2001's top Metal releases, "Toxicity" may well prove to be a lasting Heavy Metal classic to boot!!

Debut full-length album by French Dark Wave/Electro/Gothic/Industrial Rock/Metal band.
French four-piece Systr's debut hits the ground running and keeps rocking for ten tracks packed to the rafters with Rammstein-esque Metal brutality served on a bed of high BPM Trance euphoria that will have any Electro-Goth act quaking in their eyeliner. Having replaced one co-founder in 2009 this release is a clear statement to the world that Systr is an uncompromising, intelligent beast with one purpose to change the face of Electro-Goth.
The bands' scowling vocals and real time Metal instrumentation mixed with Goan 'reach for the lasers' Acid digitalisation is a much needed injection of inspiration and competition into the current scene. A flood of Electronica and effect ridden growls that cover the vocalist’s accent meet the listener and to be honest that is a general summary of the whole piece. It’s limited what can be done with such a formula and there are only changes of pace to differentiate most of this.
"Gazole" opens with its title track; a slamming Metal-dance breakbeat inferno that takes no prisoners with lyrics delivered with more venom than Skindred on crack and with the chorus belted out this is one of the less melodic outtakes from the album.
"DBMB" is of a more complex, Hardcore bent involving more intelligent arrangements of vocal harmonies and overdubs that when married with the band's patented blend of Metal and Dance proves why Systr deserves recognition as one lean contender for best emerging Electro-Goth act of 2011. 
"The Race" sees the band pick up the tempo, reverting to their initial raging vocal overdubs and primordial sound. This track live would have the crowd going mental with its mix of raw energy, speed and unrelenting vocal delivery. It just keeps coming at you with an infectious confidence that should be on any prize fighters warm up track list. Truly impressive and hard to top in the following six tracks.
"Understanding" leans more towards the band's Dance influences with more euphoric overtones and female vocals harmonising with the lead singer's growl to produce what feels like a watering down of Systr's essence. Not to worry as "Point Break" sees more material akin to "The Race" nailed to an intent crushing riff interwoven in due course with more 'white glove' Electronics to produce an exhausting finale.
"All Given Words" sees the band in more sombre mood giving the impression that they're starting to run out of gas, and inspiration. This is proven by "Sportswear (dead or alive)" that sees Bagger rapping the verses that fill the gaps between a spoken/sung chorus that fails to impress with the track's similarity to Limp Bizkit adding to "Gazole"'s seeming loss of direction. It's by this stage of the album that the listener starts to think that perhaps an EP would have been a more effective introduction to the band as all that they achieved in "Gazole"'s opening tracks is slowly watered down by a succession of increasingly weak material.
Final track "Superheroes" does try to ensure that "Gazole" exits on a high note, and although it's not a bad piece of work it's without direction and comes across as unnecessary filler.
This album shows a band on the cusp of the big time, but only on the condition that they have enough creative ammunition to keep their audience happy because they showed signs of flagging by the end of this album.
Only with the release of their forthcoming follow-up will it be possible to gauge their long-term success.
