MAYHEM “Ordo Ad Chao” /CD/

The fourth full-length album by cult Norwegian Black Metal band.
Mayhem’s "Ordo Ad Chao" supposed to be one of the best Black Metal releases of the year, if not the best Metal release of the year period.
It is the first Mayhem album to feature vocalist Attila Csihar since the 1994 album "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas"; he was returned to the band a couple years ago. Blasphemer said in an interview with Inferno Magazine that Necrobutcher did not play the bass guitar on the album, despite being credited in the booklet. Drummer Jan Axel Blomberg (Hellhammer) said that the drum tracks were not equalized and only the bass drums were triggered. His drumming is simply crushing. He ended saying "the production sounds necro as f**k, but that's the way we wanted it – this time. It represents Mayhem today". Attila's vocals are harsh and demonic, and his return has improved the band's sound.
Indeed, the sound of the album is much rawer than that of any official Mayhem studio release since "Deathcrush" EP, with a very bass-heavy mix. Despite that, the album continues the somewhat unorthodox songwriting approach showcased on the band's last two releases, with "Illuminate Eliminate" being the band's second longest song. The album features some Death grunts and clean vocals. However, "Grand Declaration Of War" features more clean vocals.
The 2007 version of Mayhem is as grim as ever, and "Ordo Ad Chao" is an outstanding Black Metal album. The production is sparse and low-fi,with a lot of treble and not much bass. The songs are evil and disturbing in true Mayhem fashion, and once your ears adjust to the production style it's even better.
The album is very atmospheric, but there are also some interesting riffs that catch your ear.
Mayhem helped define a genre of music, and there's always the concern that a veteran band just doesn't have it any more. That's not the case with Mayhem, who continues to define Black Metal with another memorable album.
The album was charted at #12 in Norway, making it the band's highest charting album yet.
