The album's eclectic music incorporates Pop and Urban music styles with instrumentation from Techno beats, guitars, drums, synthesizers, strings, and Middle Eastern musical instruments. 
Spears explained that the sexual nature of "In The Zone" was subconscious and happened while she was in the process of developing the album.
Spears collaborated with artists such as Madonna and the Ying Yang Twins on the album, while the contributions to its production came from a wide range of producers, including Bloodshy & Avant, R. Kelly, Trixster, Moby, Guy Sigsworth and The Matrix.
"In the Zone" is widely considered by the critics as a major turning point in the Spears' artistic journey and a culmination in her transition from a teen Pop star to a more adult female artist. Various critics and publications have analysed the influence of the album on Pop music, with NPR ranking it amongst "The 50 Most Important Recordings of the Decade", calling it "a primer on the sound of Pop in the 2000s".

Spears's second eponymous record after "Britney" (2001), though the album's name refers to both her first and middle names. It marks Spears's first major activity since the dissolution of her longtime record label, Jive Records, in 2011.
On numerous occasions, Spears has described the album as the most personal record from her catalogue. Having assumed an integral position in its production, she co-wrote each track and collaborated with songwriters and producers including Sia and will.i.am to achieve her desired sound. Furthermore, the record features guest vocals from Spears's younger sister, Jamie Lynn, T.I., and will.i.am. Musically, Britney Jean contains strong elements of EDM and Pop.

Transitioning from the "darker and more urban" themes of her fifth studio album "Blackout" (2007), Spears wanted to make her next project "a little bit lighter". She recorded much of the album between March and September 2008, after being involuntarily placed under a conservatorship earlier that year, following her highly publicized personal struggles in 2007.

"Live And More!" features the Fox television special Britney in Hawaii, which showcased Spears' concert at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu on April 24, 2000, as part of her (You Drive Me) Crazy Tour. It also includes sketches from Saturday Night Live's May 13 episode, which Spears hosted, and three music videos.
In the United States, "Live And More!" debuted at number three on the Top Music Videos on December 30, 2000. After weeks of fluctuating within the top ten, it peaked at number two on April 14, 2001. The album was certified triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on November 15, denoting shipments of 300,000 units.
