Warlock was another of the many female-fronted bands that have recently burst onto the Heavy Metal scene. But after listening to "Burning The Witches", it’s obvious that these Germans are far superior to their American counterparts, such as Hellion and Bitch.
The band was fronted by the beautiful and now legendary Dorothee Pesch. Ms. Pesch’s vocals are equally as stunning as her looks, ranging from the Geddy Lee-like vocals (à la Acid’s Kate) on the album’s excellent opening cut "Sign Of Satan" to the more raunchy Jody Turner-style on "Homicide Rocker".
Musically, the band matches the excellence of their vocalist’s talents, producing a tight often melodic sound which reminds somewhat of that great debut album from Canada’s Reckless (1981).
This album is full of high quality numbers such as "After The Bomb", "Dark Fade", "Metal Racer" and the title track. But they are far more devastating with their more uptempo material like the superb "Hateful Guy".
Warlock's debut album is quite far from where the band reached with "Triumph And Steel", but still gives the listener a quite intense Hard'n'Heavy experience although the production on the album is rather thin as for the sound. Good riffs and some good melodies and harmonies in a good balance. In a way this is rather raw Heavy Metal, but it's the one of the classic albums in history of whole Metal!!

"Triumph And Agony" is the final opus, released in 1987 and including most of the band’s main hits, such as "All We Are", "I Rule The Ruins", "Metal Tango" or "Für Immer". The result is a consistent and wholly satisfying Euro-Metal album.
The two undeniably best tracks are the bookends. "Für Immer" is a hauntingly beautiful bilingual ballad, sung with earnest, truthful emotion by Doro. “All We Are” is an out-and-out Metal anthem, reminiscent of Manowar’s “Fighting The World”, and equally as catchy. Staidly completing the podium is “Three Minute Warning”, a short burst of quasi- Speed Metal with an infectious chorus and driving, headbanging rhythm. Among the remaining tracks, two others call our attention. "Metal Tango" and "East Meets West" would certainly have made the podium, if there were more than three places available in it. The first is exactly what the title implies: an oxymoronic track that mixes hard guitar riffs with a tango-ish rhythmic sway and cheesy “ole!” backing vocals. Its chorus of “dance, demons, lose control / this is the Metal, the Metal tango” may sound just a tad ridiculous – and it is – but overall the track manages to please through and through. As for "East Meets West", whose main track screams “80’s Metal!!”, it’s just a fun song, with a fist pumping chorus sure to ingrain itself in your mind. "A Touch of Evil" and "Cold, Cold World" aren’t worthy of licking the other tracks’ boots, although they are by no means bad songs. The first boasts an excellent vocal performance from Doro, while the latter is a pleasant but bland listen that can be construed as perhaps the weakest point of the album. As a whole, this is a completely satisfying album.
The album was recorded in the US with producer Joey Balin and a different band line-up in comparison with the previous album, “True As Steel”, which had made the name of Warlock known outside of Europe. Peter Szigeti and Frank Rittel were replaced in 1987 by the American musicians Tommy Bolan and Tommy Henriksen respectively. The album also features British drummer Cozy Powell on some tracks.

First re-release of the third full-length album by the legendary German Heavy Metal band.
With Doro at the helm, Warlock put forth an interesting variation on the Sleaze/Glam Metal sound with a fair share of Judas Priest and Accept influences to boot. They started more concentrated upon the riff oriented style the previous mentioned bands exhibited and didn’t spend too much time trying to write epic sounding ballads or lighter edged rock songs. On this release band began evolving their sound slightly away from that style and towards something a bit more mainstream. “True as Steel” is sort of a mixture of older guard aggressive Heavy Metal and the Glam style that was really growing in prominence at this point in the 80s. You can hear bits and pieces of Dokken, Quiet Riot, and even a little bit of early Riot (pre-Thundersteel). There is a larger emphasis on sing along choruses, much as is the case on the next release “Triumph and Agony”. It still, however, holds onto a good deal of the Speed Metal elements that were heard on “Burning the Witches” and the very heavy “Hellbound”. The resulting mix of styles is a very interesting listen.
This album has their first success outside of Europe, the single "Fight for Rock" charted on Billboard, and the music video for this song was aired on MTV's Headbangers Ball.

The debut full-length album by Canadian Thrash/Speed Metal band.
There will always be a portion of any modern Thrash Metal bands that is compared to the Golden Age of the 1980s. Thrash was just such a pivotal force in that era that those comparisons are going to be made. Some bands resist it, others embrace it, and in the case of Warsenal, they desperately try to recreate it. As soon as this album kicks off it is quite obvious that this band so desperately wants to recreate that chaotic and raw sound of early Thrash albums that they are willing to sacrifice many of the solid evolutionary steps that occurred between 1985 and 2015.
Warsenal never stops going 200 miles per hour of endless Punky leads, riffs out the ass, and drums that sort of meld with one another. It also has the quintessential snarling/shouty vocals that were a dime a dozen back in the day. In a way, it’s almost impressive just how Old School Warsenal took this record and when it works, like on the restrained “Stab You One by One” or “Let Me Out” then the band showcase what might have been a sense of direction.
The first track “Dying on Stage” is a typical Speed/Trash Metal song with generic lyrics, presented at a faster than hell pace. The track had a lot of Megadeth’s “Holy Wars…” influences, albeit with a dirty and poor instrumental take on it. “Hit’ n’ Run” sounds like a demo from Metallica singing with a teenager who loves Dave Mustaine. “Conquer” is like a “Hit’ n’ Run” continuation with a speed solo. And “Stab You One By One” starts off with an impressionistic riff and cadence. “Unstoppable” starts with the same feeling as the earlier songs, with a chorus shouted by what sounds like all the band members combined. The two last songs have the all-the-same-song feel to them like the others: speed riffs, hash vocals a-la “Kill ‘Em All” style, and overall give the listener nostalgia about "that times".
Highly recommended for fans of early Metallica and Megadeth!

This album is one massive indictment towards our current society, raging on with sheer aggression. Kicking off with two fierce and fast piece of Hardcore, Wastage immediately makes an impact. Their main influences are Thrash Metal bands like Sepultura or Slayer and Hardcore acts including Biohazard and Sick Of It All. The latter are certainly present in the opening tracks "Away From The Darkness" and "Slave To The System". An you'll easily can see the moshpits forming when Wastage blasts off on stage!
From then on, the tone is set and Wastage opens all registers to make this a brutal album. However, there is still plenty of room for some melody, some awesome Thrash Metal riffs and a bit of experiment. "Ham-Let" and "You Can't Stop" even bring bands like Soilwork, Meshuggahor Machine Head to mind. Yes this album is quite diverse, even if you keep in mind that this is one brutal motherfucker.
Even if you not really a fan of Hardcore music, but Thrash Metal is your music, this album is recommended for you. Thrashers and Hardcore fans can blindly trust Wastage to come up with something good, something that even Old School Death Metal fans can appreciate! So check it out but whatever you do, be careful. This will spike your adrenaline and there might be some innocent victims in the aftermath!!

One of the decade's best Black Metal albums, no doubt. Watain's second full-length offers an atmosphere that reminds of Dissection meets Gorgoroth, but this is just a reference point. Watain offers their very own approach, bolstered by a professional production and a completely effective display of utter darkness.
Watain are a heavily Dissection influenced outfit. Without further examination, one might even call them Dissection clones; but Watain have surpassed the band that may have been their main inspiration. "Casus Luciferi" features eight long, mainly hell-paced and always break-laden songs with a multitude of layered guitar melodies and harmonic textures, more so than on their debut album, but still keep an impeccable balance between being melodic, raw, Black and heavy for the full length of this album. Although the truer than true crowd might not like to hear this, "Casus Luciferi", not as a whole, just in a couple of places, is not all too far away from some of the heavier and better moments on the latest Dimmu Borgir records as far as some melodies, bridge sections and build-ups go. However, the final result is far more convincing, because this band manages to sound fresh and preserve an underground feeling. They are able to write more interesting riffs, better and at the same time neither cheesy nor happy sounding melodic hooks, and songs that despite being no verse/chorus/verse affairs flow incredibly well and capture the listener's attention from start to finish. No keyboards, female vocals or fad-of-the-day gimmicks like an orchestra, cross dressing or other assorted faggottry. The enjoyment of the excellent musical content of album is enhanced by a natural sounding and nowhere overproduced production job and there's even a clearly audible bass which takes an active role in some of the compositions. For Ildjarn fanatics this might be way too commercial, for those with even the slightest interest in more melodic manifestations of Black Metal this is a Musthave!!

Debut full-length album by International Progressive/Dark Metal band.
The new band of journalist and singer Arno Strobl (Carnival In Coal, 6:33) and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Déhà (Coag, Yhdarl, Maladie). This French-Bulgarian duo have a lot on their twisted minds, so much they've compacted it all into an expressive and often anguished 33-minute composition constituting their debut release, "Thoughtscanning". We All Die (Laughing) shows remarkable aptitude for pulling off what they do on the album's focal track, "Thoughtscan". Not many artists can keep a single half hour song engaging, but Strobl and Deha do just that.
Frankly, it's the instrumentation (all fielded by Deha) over the singing that presents the most appeal here, albeit the exchanged vocal pitches are fun if occasionally unhinged and vexing in sections of "Thoughtscan". Of course, the intent of this project is to give voice to torment and dark emotions, so no matter how discordant and unnerving the wailing gets in spots, it's all part of the daunting journey. On the positive side, there are grizzled nudges toward Mike Patton, Ihsahn and King Diamond, and even the incremental tradeoff death yelps are well-executed. Altogether, the unpredictable nature of Strobl and Deha's scattershot vocal ranges adds creepy spontaneity throughout the spacious yet curving drive of "Thoughtscan".
Expect "Thoughtscan" to veer through many brackets of Metal ranging from Black to Power to Goth to Grind, exploding in spots with tight propulsions that are constantly pulled back no matter how fast We All Die (Laughing) gets at times. Deha impressively furnishes his guitar lines between ornate and grotesque, just like the vocal tracks in this piece. Manic reed squeaks poke in like provoking demoniacs and piano fragments serve as barely-grounded steps ushering the listener into the next successive plane of lunacy lying in wait. Feelings of paranoia are omnipresent, no matter when the throttles are eased by these guys.
What's most impressive about "Thoughtscan" is its resonant intro and outro that logically sustains a placid if ethereal spirit of continuum, no matter how many directions the composition darts in-between. Deha's sprawling and Funky bass plunks beneath his ghostly guitar lines are soon morphed into pleasing note dragging Rock distortion that feels like a Pink Floyd number you know is bound to be eviscerated in due time. The return of Deha's docile measures at the end shows the duo's muse returning to his wits after losing himself in madness, which gives "Thoughtscan" an appreciable sense of morality. No matter how messed-up, cruel and frightening "Thoughtscan" may get, there's these bookended moments of stability that holds the track (and its audience) in check and thankfully feels like much-needed relief. Then again, the endpoint to "Thoughtscan" comes with the eruptive interruption to the denouement, so let all suppositions of sanity be dismissed.

Сanada is rife with excellent Death and Black Metal acts right now, and Weapon can be counted among them. After two stellar albums of filthy Blackened Death Metal, band makes their blasphemous Relapse debut with "Embers and Revelations". Sounding like an unholy mutation of Bathory and Morbid Angel, Weapon plummet even further south of heaven with "Embers And Revelations", invoking aural images of the legends of the first wave of classic Black and Death Metal but with a uniquely Eastern slant. Not only does the band have peculiar origins (Canadian by way of Bangladesh), but Weapon continue to prove themselves a multifaceted musical beast that is Black Metal in concept, Death Metal in sound, and classic Heavy Metal in spirit.
They’re not as occult styled as their west coast brothers Mitochondrion or as disturbing and enigmatic as Antediluvian, they hold their own in a nice enclave they’ve carved for themselves within the crowded genre. "Embers And Revelations" arriving two years after "From The Devil’s Tomb" which was a hellish squall of riffs, mixing Raw Black energy and splashes of Melodic or Progressive Death. It was a big step up from their first record and showed that Weapon write strongly and has great promise, leaving room to grow with each release while laying down top notch Death Metal. "Embers And Revelations" takes the progress they made in "From The Devil’s Tomb" and refining it further to display 37 minutes of prime Black/Death Metal.
Whereas other bands that started out as Black Metal but then evolved into Death Metal (think Gehenna, Aeternus, and to a lesser extent Behemoth) lost a bit of "magic" along the way, Weapon just seems to keep on truckin’. Makes way for the new heathens of darkness, Weapon present to the hordes one gloriously punishing collection of instantly classic Blackened Death Metal with ‘Embers And Revelations’. “Embers And Revelations” is not their magnum opus - that honour still belongs to their debut - but it is a very worthy addition to their discography and recommended to fans of atmospheric/ritualistic Death Metal!

The debut and only full-length studio album by Danish Doom/Sludge Metal band.
Since it's inception, the band have relentlessly pursued the darker side of the Metal genre, creating a crushing and devastatingly heavy music. Whelm's debut album is witness to a form of Doom Metal, influenced by early Black Metal, Oldschool Death and Post Rock. 
The album name derives from the 1919 WB Yeats poem "The Second Coming". The musical texture is further enriched with a wide selection of instruments rarely seen in the Metal genre.
The band create moments of beauty, darkness and brutality - pure bliss. In 55 minutes, band takes us down in utter darkness. The album is quite constant in its brutal, yet atmospherical sound, though now and again there are some differences that wake you up from a depressive slumber.
All in all, this is a great Doom/Sludge album with Progressive elements. The vocals are hauntingly pained, the music is solid. Enough songs though with lengthy and varied musical themes. Try them!
