This is an album that really needs to be interpreted on a case by case basis. Fans of Avant-garde work by the likes of Lou Reed will be equally at home here, with fans of a more Atmospheric Black Metal. There is a lot of Noise, a lot of Ambience, and a lot of powerful and meaningful confusion. This is an album to be played at full volume to the sky in response to the happenings around us. Match this with heavy Black Post-Metal drone, and you have in “Covid Diaries” - a deeply atmospheric and disturbing album.

The fifteenth full-length album by Hungarian Experimental Black/Doom Metal/Ambient one-man-band.
Nagaarum represents a one-man formation, the predecessor of which started its activity in 2008 under the Pigbaloon moniker. He considers the project as a playground for his musical experiments, which he established after having completed the first album with GuilThee.
As far as the music is concerned, in terms of style, his records span from Ambient to Post-Rock with Doom and Black Metal being the notable extremes. One criterion is that all music played on the album (instruments, vocals, mixing, and mastering), all lyrics, and graphic design has to be authentic and unique.
Nagaarum’s use of analogue synthesizers over digital or even emulated analogue are part of what makes these ambient sections so appealing. The variety of floating textures achieved add to the music without distracting, and also mix in some 70s flavour to create a nice juxtaposition to the more modern styles.
"Apples" runs the span of 12 tracks, altogether adding up to almost 70 minutes. The composition on this record is great throughout.
In all, this surely is an interesting album. Fans of Ambient Black Metal can easily trust this one to satisfy. Or even Doomsters will be happy with the synth passages. It's not a perfect Extreme Metal record, but it definitely is a unique and compelling addition to your collection. So check it out, you'd be pleasantly surprised more than a few times!
