The downside to a success like "Thriller" is that it's nearly impossible to follow, but Michael Jackson approached "Bad" much the same way he approached "Thriller" - take the basic formula of the predecessor, expand it slightly, and move it outward. This meant that he moved deeper into Hard Rock, deeper into schmaltzy adult contemporary, deeper into hard dance - essentially taking each portion of "Thriller" to an extreme, while increasing the quotient of immaculate studiocraft.
Released nearly five years after it's predecessor, "Thriller" (1982), "Bad" saw Jackson exercise even more artistic freedom than he did with his two previous releases ("Off The Wall" and "Thriller"). Jackson composed nine of the album's eleven tracks, and received co-producer credit for the entire album. The album marked the final collaboration between Jackson and producer Quincy Jones.
Nine of the eleven songs (ten on vinyl version) on "Bad" were released as singles; one was a promotional single, and another was released outside of the United States and Canada. The only songs on the album, which were not released as commercial singles, were "Speed Demon" and "Just Good Friends".
With seven hit singles out of eleven tracks, "Bad" could easily be thought of as a greatest hits album. Songs such as "Bad" and "Dirty Diana" show a harder, more Rocking approach to the music. Jackson's universal appeal, along with his hiccup vocals and huge Pop sound, is still very much in focus.
The album continued Jackson's commercial success in the late 1980s, and garnered six Grammy Award nominations, winning two. Apart from commercial success, the album was well received by contemporary critics. Five of the singles hit No. 1 in the United States, while a sixth charted within the top ten, and a seventh charted within the top twenty on the Hot 100. "Bad" peaked at No. 1 in thirteen countries and charted within the top twenty in other territories. It was ranked No. 43 in the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time of the MTV Generation in 2009 by VH1, and number 202 in Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. "Bad" has sold an estimated 35 million copies worldwide, making it the eleventh best-selling album of all time. In 2017, the album was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America, denoting sales of over ten million copies in the United States.

The tenth full-length studio album by legendary American Funk/Soul/Pop singer.
First posthumous album with previously unreleased tracks. It is the first release of all-new Jackson material since "Invincible" in 2001 and the seventh since Jackson's death on June 25, 2009.
The majority of the songs on the album are songs that were written and recorded during the "Invincible" era and onwards. The album contains two songs that were written during the "Thriller era", "Behind the Mask" and "Much Too Soon". The song "(I Like) The Way You Love Me" previously appeared on "The Ultimate Collection" (2004) with the title "The Way You Love Me" as an unreleased track. For "Michael", the song has been re-arranged and more vocals have been added. The song "Best of Joy" is one of the last that Michael recorded during his lifetime, having written and recorded it in 2009, the year of his death.
Prior to the album's release, a lawyer for Jackson's father Joe stated that Jackson was a perfectionist and "would never have wanted his unfinished material to be released". Jackson collaborator will.i.am said it was "disrespectful" to release the material, as Jackson was not able to approve it. The album drew controversy over the authenticity of some vocals. The authenticity of the vocals on the tracks "Breaking News", "Keep Your Head Up", and "Monster" is still in doubt.
"Michael" debuted at number one in Germany, selling 85 000 copies in its first week. The album also debuted at number one in Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden. In the US, it debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 228 000 copies, followed by 150 000 the next week. In Denmark, the album debuted at number four, selling 4 936 copies in its first week. On December 19, 2010, the album opened in the UK at number four with sales of 113 000, which was Michael Jackson's biggest opening sales week in the UK since the release of "Dangerous" nearly 20 years before. In its first five weeks, the album sold over 434 000 copies in the United States. In the same week, the album was certified Platinum by the RIAA for shipping over a million copies. "Michael" received numerous Gold and Platinum certifications worldwide.

Jackson's first album released through Epic Records, and the first produced by Quincy Jones, whom he met while working on the 1978 film "The Wiz". Michael Jackson had released four solo albums before, but this was his breakthrough, the album that established him as an artist of astonishing talent and a bright star in his own right. This was a visionary album, a record that found a way to break Disco wide open into a new world where the Beat was undeniable, but not the primary focus - it was part of a colourful tapestry of lush Broadway ballads and strings, smooth Soul and Pop, R&B, Soft Rock, and alluring Funk. Its roots hearken back to the Jacksons' huge mid '70s hit "Dancing Machine", but this is an enormously fresh record, one that remains vibrant and giddily exciting years after its release. This is certainly due to Jackson's emergence as a blindingly gifted vocalist, equally skilled with overwrought ballads as driving dance-floor shakers, where his asides are as gripping as his delivery on the verses. It's also due to the brilliant songwriting, an intoxicating blend of strong melodies, rhythmic hooks, and indelible construction. Most of all, its success is due to the sound constructed by Jackson and producer Quincy Jones, a dazzling array of Disco Beats, Funk guitars, clean mainstream Pop, and unashamed schmaltz that is utterly thrilling in its utter joy. This is highly professional, highly crafted music, and its details are evident, but the overall effect is nothing but pure pleasure. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart and number one on the Top Black Albums chart, staying at number one on the latter for 16 weeks, and was an enormous critical success. Five Singles were released from the album. Jackson wrote three songs, including the Billboard Hot 100 number-one Single "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", his first solo number-one Single in the United States since "Ben" seven years prior. The second single, "Rock with You", also topped the chart. With following Singles "Off the Wall" and "She's Out of My Life" also reaching the US top 10, Jackson became the first solo artist to have four Singles from the same album reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
