The sixth full-length album by legendary British Melodic Alternative/Hard Rock band.
The album marked a musical departure from their signature sound. After the lackluster performance of "Adrenalize", Def Leppard realized it was time to abandon their trademark wall-of-guitars sound. Jettisoning producer Mutt Lange - who, admittedly, was busy producing his wife, country singer Shania Twain - the group stripped its sound to the basics for "Slang". There are very few layers-of-guitar effects on the album, just straight, crunching chords. Most notably, Rick Allen has returned to playing acoustic drums after playing an electronic kit for nearly a decade. The change in approach is apparent and welcome - Def Leppard hasn't sounded so immediate since "Pyromania". Furthermore, they decided to expand their musical vocabulary slightly, working elements of R&B and Funk into the rhythms. Not all of the experiments work, but Def Leppard sound revitalized, particularly when they attack a straightforward rocker. "Slang" would have been even better if they had come up with a set of hooks that sounded as alive as their performance, but the album is a much-needed return to form for the band.
"Slang" is the first album with new material to feature new guitarist Vivian Campbell (Campbell had previously played on B-side collection "Retro Active" in 1993 and on the new song on "Vault" compialtion a year earlier). It charted at #14 on The Billboard 200[6] and #5 on the UK Albums Chart. It is also the only Def Leppard album that does not feature their recognisable logo on the album cover.

While possessing the tight, controlled attack of comrades Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, Def Leppard was uninterested in the fantastic, menacing, and sometimes gothic themes of those bands; instead, "On Through the Night" is a collection of working-class Hard Rock anthems informed by the big, glittering hooks of Glam Rock. It may lack the detailed production and more Pop-oriented songwriting of later efforts, but it's also arguably their heaviest album, and some Leppard fans prefer this sound!
The album features re-recorded versions of "Rocks Off" and "Overture", tracks from the band's original independently released EP, "The Def Leppard E.P.". Other tracks are rerecorded versions of early demos, some of which appeared on the "First Strike" and "Warchild" bootlegs. "Rocks Off", "Wasted", "Rock Brigade" (b/w "When the Walls Came Tumbling Down") and "Hello America" were released as singles. However, the versions of "Rocks Off" and "Wasted" that appears on the singles is a different recording from that of the LP, as is its B-side, "Hello America".
It charted at #51 on the Billboard 200 and #15 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA on 9 May 1989.

Robert John "Mutt" Lange's buffed-to-a-sheen production - polished drum and guitar sounds, multi-tracked layers of vocal harmonies, a general sanding of any and all musical rough edges, and a perfectionistic attention to detail - set the style for much of the melodic Hard Rock that followed.
It wasn't a raw or spontaneous sound, but the performances were still energetic and committed. Leppard's quest for huge, transcendent Hard Rock perfection on "Pyromania" was surprisingly successful; their reach never exceeded their grasp, which makes the album an enduring (and massively influential) classic!
Song "Rock! Rock! ('Till You Drop)" was performed as early as 1980, originally as a song called "Medicine Man", with different lyrics.

The eleventh full-length studio album by legendary British Melodic Alternative/Hard Rock band.
Def Leppard's first studio album since "Songs From The Sparkle Lounge" (2008) (marking the longest gap between two studio albums in their career) and their first on earMUSIC Records, it became their seventh top ten album after debuting on the Billboard 200 at number 10.
Embracing their fresh burst of creativity and armed with a stockpile of new songs, Leppard repaired to Elliott’s Dublin studio, Joe’s Garage, with long-time sound engineer/producer Ronan McHugh. In familiar surroundings, the band was in an ideal situation to do what they do best – and were determined not to be shackled by expectations. They decided to call the album “Def Leppard” “because it doesn’t sound like any one specific era” of their music.
The satisfyingly disparate Def Leppard once again showed Joe Elliott and company were true to their word. Kicking off in vintage form with the irresistible swagger of the "Hysteria"-esque “Let’s Go”, the album went on to absorb everything from the crunching NWOBHM-style anthem “All Time High” to barnstorming Alt-Rock workouts such as “Sea Of Love” and the chest-beating “Wings Of An Angel”, which recalled the band’s mid-90s "Slang" era. Yet the experimentation didn’t end there. The proudly eclectic Def Leppard also found space for exciting departures, including the atypically Funky “Man Enough”, the cool, beats and Electronica-driven Pop of “Energized” and the ambitious “Blind Faith”.
The album shot to No.10 on the Billboard 200 and to No.11 on the UK Top 40. “Def Leppard” also won a 2016 Classic Rock Roll of Honours Award for Album of the Year.
Def Leppard’s self-titled album gave its creators a mighty shot in the arm, and the indefatigable Hard Rockers have been on a high ever since!

Robert John "Mutt" Lange's buffed-to-a-sheen production - polished drum and guitar sounds, multitracked layers of vocal harmonies, a general sanding of any and all musical rough edges, and a perfectionistic attention to detail - set the style for much of the melodic Hard Rock that followed.
It wasn't a raw or spontaneous sound, but the performances were still energetic and committed. Leppard's quest for huge, transcendent Hard Rock perfection on "Pyromania" was surprisingly successful; their reach never exceeded their grasp, which makes the album an enduring (and massively influential) classic!

"On Through TAhe Night" established the band as one of the leading lights of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. While possessing the tight, controlled attack of comrades Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, Def Leppard was uninterested in the fantastic, menacing, and sometimes gothic themes of those bands; instead, "On Through the Night" is a collection of working-class Hard Rock anthems informed by the big, glittering hooks of Glam Rock. It may lack the detailed production and more Pop-oriented songwriting of later efforts, but it's also arguably their heaviest album, and some Leppard fans prefer this sound!
The album features re-recorded versions of "Rocks Off" and "Overture", tracks from the band's original independently released EP, "The Def Leppard E.P.". Other tracks are rerecorded versions of early demos, some of which appeared on the "First Strike" and "Warchild" bootlegs. "Rocks Off", "Wasted", "Rock Brigade" (b/w "When the Walls Came Tumbling Down") and "Hello America" were released as singles. However, the versions of "Rocks Off" and "Wasted" that appears on the singles is a different recording from that of the LP, as is its B-side, "Hello America".
It charted at #51 on the Billboard 200 and #15 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA on 9 May 1989.
