Ask Heavy Metal detractors what rubs them the wrong way the most about the genre, and one possible reason could be that, more often than not, Metallers take themselves way too seriously. But that can't be said about Children Of Bodom, who have showed their lighter side when it comes to their knack for selecting cover tunes over the years (Britney Spears, Kenny Rogers, etc.). And on their 2011 release, "Relentless, Reckless Forever", those who purchase the iTunes version will be "treated" to a reading of Eddie Murphy's '80s cheese classic "Party All the Time". Elsewhere throughout "Relentless, Reckless Forever", you'll endure a blitzkrieg of vicious yet tricky guitar riffs and solos, while "singer" Alexi Laiho knows only two ways to deliver a vocal line - growl and/or shout. But it's not all pedal to the Metal from beginning to end, at least from a musical standpoint - for every ferocious Rocker (the album-opening "Not My Funeral") there is a breather ("Roundtrip to Hell and Back"). And there are tunes that lie somewhere between these two aforementioned approaches, most obviously being the album's leadoff single/video, "Was It Worth It?". And as evidenced by the album's title track, the band has a slight Goth edge to its attack, thanks to the keyboard work of Janne Wirman. As with many modern-day Metallists, these Finnish lads come up with some rather fitting song titles for the accompanying musical ferocity - "Shovel Knockout" being the best of the bunch.
Front to back, "Relentless, Reckless Forever" is probably the most consistent Children Of Bodom release yet!

The ninth full-length album by the legendary Finnish Melodic Death Metal band.
Band's skyrocketing start in the mid-90s was a takeoff that newcomer Metal bands are still being measured against till this day, almost all of their albums earned Gold or even Platinum status in their home country and over the past two decades they‘ve become regulars on some of the world‘s biggest stages – Children Of Bodom.
While Children of Bodom are used to personnel shakeups, the departure of longtime guitarist Roope Latvala before the recording of "I Worship Chaos" posed a challenge. A member since 2003, he was an integral part of the band's sound. This left vocalist/guitarist Alexi Laiho handling all six-string chores alone - the first time he had ever done so - making this Children Of Bodom's debut as a quartet. It was recorded in a converted warehouse rather than a conventional recording studio, and delivers a more spacious sound. Laiho and bassist Henkka Seppälä tuned half a step lower for each song, resulting in a much darker, heavier attack. Opener "I Hurt" is classic Children Of Bodom with a knotty, Technical Death Metal riff, labyrinthine scalar flights, and piercing melodic interludes. The band's characteristic mastery of rhythmic syncopation is heard best on "My Bodom (I Am the Only One)", with drummer Jaska Raatikainen adding counterpoint as he alternates between martial cadences and blastbeats and the whole tune crisscrosses time signatures. The new bottom-end string throb is most punishing on "Horns" and "Suicide Bomber", insanely tempoed, Blackened Thrashers heavier than anything Children Of Bodom has recorded in a decade. Keyboardist Janne Wirman becomes more integral to the mix. He adds force to the band's classic Melo-Tech Death Metal charge, and provides utterly seductive, sinister atmospherics in these new songs. He can either create swirling chordal backdrops - as on the crunchy, Doom-tinged "Prayer for the Afflicted" - or powerful, fleet, single-note exchanges with Laiho - as on the glorious "Morrigan". The latter is a medium-tempo groover and a clear single. Its riff is fueled by an infectious guitar hook as the drums alternate between pronounced swing and double-timed frenzy. It contains a chanted chorus and spiraling crescendoes. This passes for a stadium Rock anthem. "All for Nothing" is an outlier even in Children Of Bodom's loopy catalog. It has an Iron Maiden-esque guitar and bass riff, with eloquent acoustic piano lines and transcendent melody atop thundering drums. Laiho delivers a screaming extended solo followed by one from Wirman on synth as they trade lines to take it out.
The songwriting on "I Worship Chaos" is impressive, as if the quartet format forced Children Of Bodom to focus on delivering tunes of real substance before anything else.
The performances are equally inspired - the material is so good, it challenge the musicians to pull it off. This is the sound of a grown-up Children Of Bodom; it may not be as unhinged as their earliest records, but it's nearly as misanthropic! This band still has very sharp teeth, a nasty disposition, and a hell black sense of humor!!

The first Children Of Bodom album to feature guitarist Roope Latvala (Stone, Sinergy, ex-Waltari), due to the departure of their original rhythm guitarist Alexander Kuoppala.
Children Of Bodom is a band that many fans of Heavy Metal have mixed feelings towards. They're that type of band that the majority of fans like one part of their career, and dislike the others. They're also a band that has a lot of mixed views when it comes to their albums. The band itself started out very heavy in their music, even with keyboards. However, as the years passed, they started to get softer. And, this change is something that not everybody has enjoyed. "Are You Dead Yet?" is a perfect example of this. It was the band's first album to receive a widespread mixed review. It is an album with mixed pros and cons. The main cons of the album are the sometimes-drifting guitar work of mister Laiho, and the occasional break/weird moment of the song and lyric structure. However, outside those few issues, the album is a great piece of work from the band. It's a shame that some people find a ton of faults with it, as there aren't a lot.
On this album, the band used the drop C tuning, whereas they usually used D standard. The Power Metal influences previously prominent are also greatly reduced on this album, resulting in a more simplistic performance and slower tempos. The keyboards also were dropped lower in the mix, with the guitars maintaining musical dominance. The musician ship of the recording is as great as always. Everything can be heard clearly instrument wise, and the vocals are clean and audible. At times, the guitar work of Laiho can seem to be lost, but these instances are few and far between. The quality of the album is pretty top-notch as well.
"Are You Dead Yet?" will probably be a pretty controversial release among their faithful fan base, but there's no denying that it's easily one of the best Metal releases of 2005! It shows the quintet plowing full steam ahead, as the venom continues to bubble to the surface throughout!!
In 2005, "Are You Dead Yet?" was ranked number 485 in Rock Hard Magazine's book of "The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time".

The sixth full-length studio album by legendary Finnish Melodic Death Metal band.
The album includes more Thrash Metal than its predecessors. While writing and recording the album, Alexi Laiho had stated he felt very aggressive, and as a consequence the songs would be faster and "Thrashier" than the songs displayed on their previous release, "Are You Dead Yet?". He notified fans, however, that certain parts of the album would also be more progressive, as heard on "LoBodomy".
All the ingredients from past Bodom releases are present once more: Gothic keyboards, guitar acrobatics, and vocals that sound straight out of the torture chamber. But one thing that differentiates Children Of Bodom from the host of other similarly styled bands is that they know the importance of succinct songwriting - only one track here stretches past the five-minute mark. As a result, "Blooddrunk" showcases one of the few Metal bands that manage to balance straight-to-the-point songwriting with their collective instrumental prowess.
The album includes a re-recorded version single "Tie My Rope". 
The song "Done With Everything, Die For Nothing" is a playable song in Guitar Hero 5, which some players consider to be one of the game's harder songs. 
"Blooddrunk" entered the Billboard 200 at number 22, making it the band's highest charted album thus far in their career, and the third highest Death or Black Metal recording chart in the USA. It sold 20,000 copies during its first week of release. The album went Gold in Finland on pre-orders alone, and topped the Finnish charts beating its nearest rival in sales by 7 to 1.
This is the album you want if you're a Children Of Bodom fan (or even just a general Thrash Metal fan) who is looking for a more keyboard-driven album than their past work. Honestly a triumph!

Children Of Bodom have a career- long history of recording covers. "Skeletons In The Closet", collects them on a single compilation with a few new ones thrown into the mix. The album contains four unreleased covers for the songs: Pat Benatar's "Hell Is for Children", Trust's (more known as Anthrax's) "Antisocial", Suicidal Tendencies' "War Inside My Head", and King Diamond's "Waiting". But the previously released songs are remixed and new details can be heard.
Along with familiar versions of the Ramones' "Somebody Put Something in My Drink", Slayer's "Silent Scream", Sepultura's "Mass Hypnosis", and Iron Maiden's "Aces High", are lighter tracks that reflect the band's more humorous side. These range from Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Lookin' out My Back Door" (complete with a banjo solo) to Britney Spears' "Oops, I Did It Again" to Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell".
No matter the cover, and no matter how intentionally campy some of these are, they all contain the requisite "heaviness" that Children Of Bodom are known for! Musthave in collection of every Metalhead!!
