A lot of things have changed in Metal since 1989, the year in which Brainstorm's original lineup came together. Alternative Metal became much more prominent, Death Metal and Black Metal became more and more plentiful (especially in Scandinavia), Goth Metal gained an enthusiastic cult following, and Metalcore took the Metal/Punk union in an increasingly vicious direction. But none of those developments have had a major stylistic impact on Brainstorm, who were a Melodic Power Metal band when they started out in 1989 and continued to be a Melodic Power Metal band 20 years later on "Memorial Roots"!
Once again, the South German Power Metal quintet pulls no punches as they bash out a firework of dynamic, melodic and technical Metal. They make no effort to change with the times on this 2009 release; obviously, they reason that if it isn't broke, why do they need to fix it? And no, it isn't broke. "Memorial Roots" is a tad predictable - at least if one has been following Brainstorm for a long time - and you won't find a lot of surprises on "Cross the Line", "Ahimsa", or any of the other tracks. Brainstorm maintain their allegiance to the old-school Power Metal of the '70s and '80s, which is probably just as well because even though "Memorial Roots" doesn't take a lot of chances, the material is enjoyable nonetheless.
Besides, if Jazz, the Blues, Salsa, Folk, Bluegrass, Reggae, and Celtic music can have their classicists - that is, those who adamantly cling to the styles of a previous era - there is no reason at all why Metal shouldn't have them as well. "Memorial Roots" isn't an essential listen, but it's definitely a worthwhile listen for Power Metal diehards who haven't lost interest in Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, or Fates Warning's pre-'90s recordings and probably never will! Less aggressive than its predecessor "Downburst", the new album has a more straightforward and anthemic quality to it!!

Whatever its title may suggest, there's nothing about Germanic Heavy Metal band Brainstorm that would imply a spur of the moment decision; the band's timeless regeneration of traditional Heavy Metal is evidently arranged, performed, recorded, and produced with meticulous planning and attention to detail. But whatever the band may lack in spontaneous combustion, they rather make up for in clinical efficiency, which may not impress unconverted observers much, but is clearly something their established fan base has not only continued to support but very much come to expect: that's right, the expected. Be that as it may, since nothing is ever guaranteed where memorable songwriting is concerned, Brainstorm deserve much credit for keeping things relatively interesting within the confines of their limited musical range.
Imperial opener "Below the Line" really outperforms its mundane title; energized fist-pumping anthems like "In the Blink of an Eye", "Still Insane", and "Dark Life" seamlessly wed biting staccato riffs to double kick drums, yet never exceed their mid-paced speed limits. And even classy late-album offerings that finally threaten Power Metal velocity - "Where Your Actions Lead You to Live" and "A life on Hold - stop quite short of losing any measure of control. Surprises? None whatsoever; so, again, don't let the title fool you: "On The Spur Of The Moment" finds Brainstorm acting like their predictable yet reliable selves. Hey, someone has to toe the line in Heavy Metal, why not Brainstorm?

This sextet is here to show the world that the Sweden does not only produce Extreme Metal bands or Symphonic Metal ones. Take a listen to “Faceless Strangers” and you’ll understand. It’s just a simple and melodic Heavy Metal band, but with a modern and aggressive outfit. It’s heavy and aggressive, but with amazing melodic aesthetics, and with a different personality. In some moments, we can feel the musical essence of Swedish Metal School, pulsing on their musical arrangements.
The sound quality is really great, in a way that we can understand all the little musical details of the work. But it is truly heavy when they need it to be, so we have no complaints about it. Musically speaking, band doing the same old and good Traditional Heavy Metal with a modern outfit (due to the tunes used on the musical instruments), and a catchy and good use of melodies. Their musical technique is not something exaggerated, with very good choruses, so be prepared to be hooked by songs as the aggressive “The Beast”, the charming melodies of the guitars on “Bagging Rainbows”, the heavyweight work of bass guitar and drums on the sinuous “Faceless Strangers”, the Hard Rock scent on the heavy song called “From My Hell and Back”, the abrasive and melodic weight presented on “Love Song”, and fine work of the keyboards on “Megan”. They are superb, so listen to “Faceless Strangers” and get yourself hooked!

Brides Of Destruction was formed by Nikki Sixx and Tracii Guns in Los Angeles 2002 initially with the name Cockstar after Mötley Crüe went on hiatus and Tracii left L.A. Guns. The lineup was rounded off with singer London LeGrand, keyboardist Adam Hamilton and Kris Kohls of Adema on drums. They were advised by radio programmers that the name Cockstar wouldn't be announced on air. They briefly adopted the moniker Motordog before settling on Brides of Destruction after it was suggested to Sixx by a friend. Hamilton left shortly after and was replaced by John Corabi, also formerly of Mötley Crüe, who became the band's second guitarist. They entered the studio with producer Stevo Bruno to begin recording. Kohls left the band in early 2003 but is still credited in the album for the songs "I Got a Gun", "Natural Born Killers", "Revolution" and "Only Get So Far" despite Sixx stating that his replacement, Scot Coogan, had re-recorded the drum parts for them. After recording his guitar parts for all the songs, Corabi left the Brides stating he wanted to pursue a solo career as his reasons. After recording was finished, the album was mixed by Grammy Award winning producer and mixer Steve Thompson. Initially it looked like the album would only see a Japanese release after signing a deal with Universal Records and failing to find a label for an American/European release. Due to this it looked likely the band were to split until they signed a deal with Sanctuary Records and set a release date that was pushed back a number of times eventually being released on March 9, 2004. Upon release, "Here Come The Brides" chart at number 92 on the Billboard 200 selling 13694 copies. The band announced the Honeymoon From Hell US tour to support the album with support from Amen and Living Things. They also played at festivals in Europe such as Download in the UK, Metaltown in Sweden and supported Alice Cooper for a couple of shows in Norway and Sweden.
"Here Come The Brides" is their most successful album being the only one to have a charting on the Billboard 200, it is also the only album that features bassist Nikki Sixx who would leave the band to rejoin Mötley Crüe for their reunion tour in 2005 and also the only album to feature John Corabi. The album's only single, "Shut The Fuck Up", failed to chart due to little airplay. "Only Get So Far" was originally written by Nikki Sixx for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
The sound combines Los Angeles Metal with slight Post-Grunge updates. "Shut the F*** Up" draws on "Generation Swine"-era Crüe, while "I Got a Gun" reaches eagerly for classic Queensrÿche. The Brides play well as a unit, and LeGrand makes up for his lack of nuance with power. The collaboration between Sixx and Guns should make "Here Come The Brides" noteworthy to their fans, while casual Metal listeners will look to the glut of heavy riffing and dedication, with occasional detours, to the classic pointed boots-and-velvet shirts Los Angeles sound.

Italian Thrashers Broken Glazz have been around since 1989, but their 1991 release “Divine” is probably one of the defining moments of their career as artists who would soon define themselves as starkly original creative sorts who would never let the confines of genres restrain them from playing the kind of music they want to play.
Over the years of their sadly under-published career, Broken Glazz have torn through the boundaries of expectations – delivering pure unadulterated Metal music at every turn regardless of whether it was Thrash or Heavy Metal. With the reissue of “Divine”, we now get to take a walk of memory lane to reminisce on the old glory of Broken Glazz, one the finest Italian experimental Thrash bands to ever grace the industry.
The one thing that defines “Divine” is how immensely technical they get with rhythm. Thrash Metal for the most past is obsessed with speed, but Broken Glazz doesn’t let that get to them. They pace themselves exactly how they think fits the song, and despite churning out some pure Thrash stuff, they have all sorts of influences floating about in this puzzle of an album, that ranges from Dream Theater-esque ballads to groovy Pantera riffing to experimental Thrash, the likes of are probably very difficult for any other act to replicate.
Despite the overall intricacy of their musicianship, their music is catchy as hell. Probably because they are so damn anthemic, and here’s where the old school attitude comes in at full force. The tempo changes are always brilliant and surprising what with all the mad ideas Andrea Verga is spouting, but vocalist Ivan Appino keeps the catchiness alive with his classic Thrash voice and screaming chanters. The music all sounds very gritty but light-hearted – the perhaps Thrash attitude matchup.
It’s just a gigantic lob of old school fun with dashes of manic technicality and the occasional, oddly haunting ballads. There’s absolutely no shortage of surprises or variety here – Broken Glazz wastes no time in going with everything and anything they think they can pull off, oblivious to all the “rules” of Thrash and whatnot. This fine attitude makes for an album that is refreshingly honest and focused on music instead of genres or stereotypes. Broken Glazz does whatever the hell they want, and they do it brilliantly!!

The first album in Dickinson's solo career that was released after he had officially left Iron Maiden (although he rejoined again in 1999). This record marked the beginning of Dickinson's collaborations with guitarist Roy Z, who would work on many of Dickinson's later albums, including "Accident Of Birth", "The Chemical Wedding" and "Tyranny Of Souls".
Dickinson started working on his second solo album while still in Iron Maiden. For the very first recording sessions, he recruited the British band Skin. Not satisfied with the style of the effort, Dickinson aborted the recording. His next attempt at a second solo album was a collaboration with producer Keith Olsen. Dickinson decided to scrap this project as well and teamed up with guitarist Roy Z and his band Tribe Of Gypsies to write and record "Balls To Picasso". The song "Change of Heart" was originally written and demoed by Roy Z and vocalist Rob Rock with their band Driver. Dickinson changed the lyrics for the version that was recorded for "Balls To Picasso". Z and Rock finally recorded and released their version when Driver reunited for their 2008 debut album, "Sons Of Thunder". Songs from the previous recording sessions later resurfaced as B-sides on Singles from "Balls To Picasso" and subsequently also as bonus tracks on the album's 2005 Extended Edition.
Stylistically, "Balls To Picasso" departs from "Tattooed Millionaire", but is still more traditional-sounding than the follow-up album "Skunkworks". Later, Dickinson said that he and Roy Z were talked into making the album less heavy than it should have been.
In a 1996 interview with Tom Russell of Glasgow-based Radio Clyde 1, Bruce revealed that the album was originally to be titled "Laughing In The Hiding Bush". The artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson – but they couldn't afford it. His album's title was changed, and he drew two squares on a toilet wall for the cover, and Thorgerson's artwork later ended up as the cover for the Anthrax album "Stomp 442". In the Anthology DVD, Dickinson said that he regrets not naming the album Laughing in the Hiding Bush after the song of the same name. The song itself is dedicated to his son, Austin, who penned the title. Thorgerson later did the artwork for Bruce's "Skunkworks" album.

In 1990, Bruce Dickinson launched his solo career with "Tattooed Millionaire", which is far from a carbon copy of his work with Iron Maiden. Many of the fans who knew him as Maiden's lead vocalist assumed that this solo debut would be Maiden-like - they expected an album of aggressive yet melodic fantasy Metal in the Maiden/Ronnie James Dio/Black Sabbath vein. But "Tattooed Millionaire" found Dickinson favoring more of a Hard Rock/Pop-Metal approach. This album is full of glossy and lighthearted Soft Metal that wouldn't be out of place on an album by Winger, Bon Jovi or Def Leppard.
The album project began when Dickinson was asked to record a song for "A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child", and so wrote "Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter". Collaborating with future Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers, Dickinson began creating a solo album, which was fundamentally different from his works with Iron Maiden, with a Hard Rock sound that is less Progressive.
"Lickin' the Gun" is more Aerosmith than King Diamond, and "Son of a Gun" is more Bad Company than Candlemass. And while some Maiden worshipers might prefer to hear Dickinson singing fantasy Metal, the fact is that "Tattooed Millionaire" is excellent. With this album, Dickinson did what fellow Brit Rob Halford did on some of Judas Priest's more commercial and Pop-influenced releases - he showed listeners another side of himself and demonstrated that he wasn't obligated to embrace fantasy Metal 100 percent of the time. For Dickinson, coming out with something more Pop-minded didn't mean being contrived or unimaginative. "Tattooed Millionaire", for all its Pop-Metal gloss, has a lot of guts, and Dickinson is consistently inspired whether he is embracing original material or providing a memorable remake of David Bowie's "All the Young Dudes".
On subsequent solo efforts like 1994's "Balls To Picasso" and 1998's "The Chemical Wedding", the British vocalist got back to fantasy Metal. However, he seemed to need a break from it in 1990, and "Tattooed Millionaire" turned out to be a most pleasant surprise!
"Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter" wasn't included on the original release, as Iron Maiden planned to record an alternate version for their 1990 album "No Prayer For The Dying", which went on to become the band's only number one single on the UK Singles Chart to date. The album did yield four Top 40 singles in the UK, with the lead and title single "Tattooed Millionaire", reaching no. 18. A cover of the David Bowie penned, Mott The Hoople hit "All The Young Dudes", was also a relative success, reaching no. 23.

With 1997's "Accident Of Birth", Bruce Dickinson returned to the top of the Heavy Metal food chain. It combined the right characteristics that a popular Metal record would need, and mashed them all together, creating an excellent atmosphere that satisfied fans all over the world. For his next studio effort, Bruce once again called up Accident of Birth's successful guitarist tandem, Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) and Roy Z. In 1998, Bruce Dickinson released "The Chemical Wedding" worldwide and once again, it was very well received. Once again, Bruce had shattered all expectations to create an album that might even be better than the previous one.
"The Chemical Wedding"'s sound is very similar to the previous album. Very heavy, yet at the same time, melody is still incorporated into the formula. Many of the songs are driven by aggressive, yet at the same time well thought out riffs. These riffs are very fitting with the sometimes angry or violent lyrical themes that are present. However, "The Chemical Wedding" still differs from "Accident Of Birth". On tracks such as the title cut, "Machine Men" or "The Alchemist" shows a more melodic side or Bruce Dickinson. These songs combine both the melody and heaviness. Professionally written and recorded, Bruce Dickinson once again pours his soul into his music, and the result is spectacular.
The record draws some inspiration from the works of William Blake, featuring sung and spoken excerpts of his prophetic works and poetry (notably And did those feet in ancient time on the track Jerusalem), and with cover art from his painting The Ghost of a Flea, although the name of the album and its title track derive from the Rosicrucian manifest the Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz.
The film, "Chemical Wedding", with a screenplay by Dickinson, was released in May 2008. It features the title track from the album on its soundtrack, but concerns a story about the reincarnation of Aleister Crowley and is otherwise unrelated.
Before Bruce got back together with Iron Maiden in 1999, he released two essential Metal albums. "The Chemical Wedding" is one of those albums, and definitely the better of the two. It's definitely one of the best Metal albums of the late 90's!!

Where In Flames stopped with their standard sound after ‘’Clayman’’ record, this band continues. Production is modern, clean and sharp, so except clean-cut sound.
Material is melodic but with Thrash attacks arranged through the sharp riffs, vocals switches from screams to clean voices, and rhythm section simple follows the guitar work, and stands for sound’s complementation. Even that material is colored with much of the fast paced songs, band doesn’t hesitates to fill the sound with acoustic passages in couple of songs.
Very good debut album. If you like In Flames, you’ll surely embrace this band!
