In the 1980s, Germany was a hotbed of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock action - it was Germany that gave fans the Scorpions, Accept and Warlock. Germany was also the home of Axxis, who was never as big as the Scorpions or Accept, but made some decent contributions to the Metal/Hard Rock field.
It was a much different time in 1989, when Axxis burst onto the scene with their debut "Kingdom Of The Night". The Heavy Metal scene was ruled by bands such as The Scorpions, Poison and a host of others that filled the airways with a much more radio friendly guitar oriented Rock that was based on catchy hooks and anthem like choruses. Axxis is one of the bands that jumped on this bandwagon and have yet to get off!
This disc, which was the best-selling debut album in Germany at the time, is filled with all the quintessential trappings you would expect from this kind of band. From the album' openers, "Living In A World" and "Kingdom Of The Night", you get the obligatory fiery anthem like Metal that will have the fist pumping and the crowd singing along with the refrain! Lead singer Bernhard Weiss is given the chance to show the right amount of angst with not one, but two mandatory power ballads with "Fire And Ice" and "Tears Of The Trees".
Guitar work of Weiss and Walter Pietsch is very good throughout the album, and the vocals of Bernhard is as very good too.
"Kingdom Of The Night" is decent and respectable album. It is easy to see why this album did so well. It gives people just what they want without having to delve to deep. This album will bring back memories of music that was less complicated and unpretentious. It was just Rock And Roll!

Powerful combination of Death Metal and obscure Black Metal gave the band an Epical and Avantgardistic touch. Extraordinary aggressiveness material, contributing to blood spilling heaviness of the riffs marking the roughness of the sea and the sensation of pandemonium due to the blasting of the skins like crushing waves. This is a re-release of band’s two first albums, "Modern Prophet" and "Frame Of Mind", completely re-recorded (!!) + unreleased studio bonus track “Regatta Fugue, Part I” as one complete CD.
Great US Prog/Power Metal highlight! Sadly a real unknown gem. It's hard to compare Aztec Jade to any others, but we can hear here some influences from Kansas, Rush, Fates Warning and early Queensryche. Uninhibited by the normal trends prevalent in music today, Aztec Jade (from Albany, USA) has developed a unique chemistry of off time progressive rock rhythms, hooky choruses, and thought provoking lyrics tied together with colorful themes and imagery. Although many aspects of AZTEC JADE go against the current trends, the members continue to remain optimistic that their music will awaken minds to the wonders and possibilities of the world, while bringing color and imagination into today's music. Although self taught, all five musicians are technically highly skilled. The song writing is excellent, as usual, and the production is impeccable. However, don't look for ground-breaking innovations or long drawn-out technical solos here. The music of Aztec Jade is exciting but has no pretention except to provide some good clean fun. And it rocks!
This is a great album with some classy lyrics and a definite taste for progressiveness. Really great stuff that highly recommended to fans of Rush, Saga, Symphony X, old Queensryche or Crimson Glory as well as to anyone into Melodic Prog Metal!!

Second full-length album by Italian Progressive Metal band.
Azure Agony with the new album gives us again an hour of dreamy Progressive Metal music. The band plays a very complex and heavily involved form of Progressive Metal. These guys do have some Prog Rock & some Speed/Power Metal also in the mix. The Prog Rock/Metal is very apparent in the arrangements of the songs structures and intricate passages. The Speed Metal comes through in some of the guitar work, mostly in the straight forward solo parts. Power Metal makes its present in some of the full and epic parts as well as some of the vocal stylings. Azure Agony started out as an instrumental band, because the lack of talented vocalist that could compliment their music instead of over ride or diminish their powerful sound. "India" being the bands second release, they found a much suited vocalist in the name of Federico Ahrens. His vocal style ranges from melodic Prog/Classic Rock to a more modern aggressive Prog Metal style and some more ballad and full on Power Metal vocals. So Azure Agony added soaring vocal melodies to the wonderful Prog Metal of the previous album "Beyond Belief", as well as various inserts from special instruments like cello, accordion and chapman stick, for a result that will not disappoint the expectations.
Azure Agony have made themselves a very fine sophomore production with "India". Their accessible take on the Dream Theater school of Progressive Metal, alternating lighter toned and fairly gentle movements with harder edged ones focusing on intensity is one that should gain this band a nice and broad audience. A very well made album that deserves a lot more attention than it has gotten so far. This band cannot be fully appreciated unless you experience their music first hand over and over again. Truly a very talented and gifted group of musicians that deserve a lot of attention!!
