The first Fates Warning album to feature current singer Ray Alder, who replaced John Arch after the release of "Awaken The Guardian" (1986), as well as the last to feature drummer Steve Zimmerman, who left the band just prior to the recording of their subsequent album "Perfect Symmetry" (1989). The album's title was inspired by No Exit, a 1944 play written by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre.
Usually regarded as the finest release from Fates Warning's early years, when their Progressive leanings were tempered with no small amount of classic Metal riffing, "No Exit" is a typically difficult album to come to grips with. Still, the album is another step forward, and tracks like "Anarchy Divine", "Shades of Heavenly Death", and "In a Word" rank among the best of their career thus far. Side two is entirely taken by the daunting "The Ivory Gate of Dreams", which, at over 20 minutes and eight separate parts, finds the band in its most extreme and complex Progressive Metal mode. "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" remains one of their better songs even three decades later. Songs like this weren't really common until the late 90s, when Dream Theater really popularized them. Many people call long songs like this, "epics", and it's absolutely a journey of epic proportions.
Like his predecessor, new vocalist Ray Alder's piercing screams are something of an acquired taste (coming off like a less disciplined version of Queensrÿche's Geoff Tate), but the rest of the band perform to their usual high technical standards.
"No Exit" is one of Fates Warning's most acclaimed releases, and rightfully so. It is a landmark album in Progressive Metal, and it marked a shift of the band from a Power Metal approach to a more Progressive approach. However, with the popularity of Thrash Metal thanks to acts like Metallica and Megadeth, they also intertwined elements of Thrash into this album. The result is an album that is unique and, at times, odd (in a good way).
In general, this album absolutely deserves its spot of notoriety among Progressive Metal, and it led to what became the most foundational band in the genre!
The album reached No. 111 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and remained on that chart for thirteen weeks, longer than any of the band's albums before or since. In a 2007 article by IGN, it was ranked No. 14 on their list of "Top 25 Metal Albums".

They came to the forefront of Thrash Metal a little later than most big bands of the time, but still knew how to enchant the listeners. Their debut album is a real gem. If you don't know the album "Doomsday For The Deceiver", you are missing a vital piece of history in your education of Heavy and/or Thrash Metal. The line-up then was impressive, and everybody reading this will know that after this album was released, bassist Jason Newsted went on and joined Metallica. He was the replacement for Cliff Burton, who tragically died in a bus crash when touring in Sweden. If this chain of events is news for you, you are either very young or very ignorant.
These two demos led to the band being signed to Metal Blade Records as to record their debut album "Doomsday For The Deceiver". Listening to these demos, it becomes clear very fast that the songs on them are very, very strong indeed, warranting them being given a record deal in the first place. The sound is quite good, but you can hear that we are talking demo material here. Classics like "Iron Tears", "Hammerhead" and "Metal Shock" made it onto that illusive debut, while with a song like "I Live You Die" we had to wait until their second (brilliant) album "No Place For Disgrace" before it was available to the public. "Iron Tears" was Flotsam's 2-track debut demo from 1985. The 4-track "Metal Shock" demo (1985) contains the only recordings of the tracks "The Evil Sheik" and "The Beast Within"!
The last three songs on the album are live ones. What is especially enthralling is that the live version of "Iron Tears" was actually recorded in Jason Newsted's apartment. The other two showcases how much heavier the band was when they played live, something that was thankfully captured in the recordings of their early albums. Especially "Hammerhead", which sounds a bit hesitant on the demo, really comes to life in this live recording, as does "She Took An Axe". Another brilliant example of a song that landed onto the debut album. 16-page booklet includes rare pictures and extensive interview with founding member Kelly Smith.

"Nightlife" is only the first in a series ("Woman in Black", "Don't Let Go", the '50s-tinged "Luanne") of energetic, nearly flawless melodic Rockers, and with "Juke Box Hero", the band somehow managed to create both a mainstream Hit Single and a highly unique-sounding track, alternating Heavy Metal guitar riffing, chorused vocals, and one of the ultimate "wanna be a Rock Star" lyrics. As for the mandatory power ballad, the band also reached unparalleled heights with "Waiting for a Girl Like You". One of the decade's most successful cross-genre tearjerkers, it has since become a staple of Soft Rock radio and completely eclipsed the album's other very lovely ballad, "Girl on the Moon", in the process. The fifth full-length studio album by legendary British-American Melodic Hard Rock/Soft Rock band.
It took Foreigner three years to release a follow-up to its 1981 blockbuster, "4". Released on December 14, 1984, it's the band's only number-one album on the United Kingdom Albums Chart, and it reached the top five on the United States Billboard 200. Perhaps that wait wasn't long enough, because "Agent Provocateur" is a prime example of the best and worst traits of AOR – a handful of remarkable songs padded by toothless filler.
Despite contributing a few killer riffs to Foreigner's '70s canon, guitarist/keyboardist Mick Jones isn't known for his six-string abilities. His biggest strength is his knack for melody as a songwriter, keyboardist, and producer, and all these qualities are evident on "Agent Provocateur". Of course, vocalist/songwriter Lou Gramm is indispensable as the band's golden-throated frontman. Jones largely guided things behind the studio console, but a co-producer usually helped, such as Alex Sadkin on this album.
"I Want to Know What Love Is" became Foreigner's first and only number one single, and it's not hard to see why. Its dreamy, hypnotic feel is due in part to Gramm's soulful lead vocals and the New Jersey Mass Choir's background vocals. Jennifer Holliday and the Thompson Twins' Tom Bailey help out as well. "That Was Yesterday", a terrific hit single, features a catchy chorus and a nifty synthesizer lick. "Reaction to Action" and "Down on Love" were both minor hits, but there's a huge difference in quality between the two; the former is the epitome of bland, formulaic AOR, while the latter includes a pleasant chorus and a warm keyboard melody. "A Love in Vain" and "Growing Up the Hard Way" are great too.
Although album sales were lower than their previous work in the US, it contains the band's biggest hit single, "I Want to Know What Love Is", which is their only #1 single on the UK singles chart and the US Billboard Hot 100, staying at the top spot for three and two weeks, respectively. The follow-up single, "That Was Yesterday", also proved to be a sizeable hit, peaking at #12 in the US. The album was certified Platinum in the UK by the BPI, and triple Platinum in the US by the RIAA.

The second full-length studio album by legendary British-American Melodic Hard Rock/Soft Rock band.
Foreigner promptly followed up its blockbuster debut with the equally successful, which featured mega-hits "Hot Blooded" and the driving title track. Opting not to mess with a good formula, the band wisely sticks to the polished Hard Rock sound that made its first record such a hit. A fine collection of songs that is Hard Rock at its best, "Double Vision" has more individualistic interpretations and a Heavy Metal tonal structure instead of some of the careful harmonies of the debut album. Recorded between March-May 1978, it was Foreigner's only album co-produced by Keith Olsen and the last recording with bass guitarist Ed Gagliardi, who would be later replaced by Rick Wills.
"Tramontane" is the only instrumental track Foreigner have released to date on a studio album. Mick Jones takes the lead vocals on "Back Where You Belong" and "I Have Waited So Long".
The lead single, released in June 1978, was "Hot Blooded," which reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In September, it was followed by "Double Vision", which charted at number 2. This was the highest position Foreigner had attained to that time. The third and final single, "Blue Morning, Blue Day", was released in December and climbed to number 15 on the chart.
The album peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and earning Platinum certification a week after its release. It has now been certified 7× Platinum for sales in excess of 7 million units and is counted as Foreigner's best selling album. In Europe, however, "Double Vision" reached the Top 40 only in the United Kingdom.

The second full-length studio album by legendary British-American Melodic Hard Rock/Soft Rock band.
Foreigner promptly followed up its blockbuster debut with the equally successful, which featured mega-hits "Hot Blooded" and the driving title track. Opting not to mess with a good formula, the band wisely sticks to the polished Hard Rock sound that made its first record such a hit. A fine collection of songs that is Hard Rock at its best, "Double Vision" has more individualistic interpretations and a Heavy Metal tonal structure instead of some of the careful harmonies of the debut album. Recorded between March-May 1978, it was Foreigner's only album co-produced by Keith Olsen and the last recording with bass guitarist Ed Gagliardi, who would be later replaced by Rick Wills.
"Tramontane" is the only instrumental track Foreigner have released to date on a studio album. Mick Jones takes the lead vocals on "Back Where You Belong" and "I Have Waited So Long".
The lead single, released in June 1978, was "Hot Blooded," which reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In September, it was followed by "Double Vision", which charted at number 2. This was the highest position Foreigner had attained to that time. The third and final single, "Blue Morning, Blue Day", was released in December and climbed to number 15 on the chart.
The album peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and earning Platinum certification a week after its release. It has now been certified 7× Platinum for sales in excess of 7 million units and is counted as Foreigner's best selling album. In Europe, however, "Double Vision" reached the Top 40 only in the United Kingdom.
