The album starts at full throttle, kicking in with a massive wall of sound in "Through Vile Black Blood", only to slow down a little bit in the third track, which carries the cool name of "Show Me Them Horns". The melodic parts everywhere are embedded in the heavy songs. For example the backing vocals in "End This Life"; melodic yet not too present, which makes sure the main focus is on Ronnie Nyman’s vocals after all. Also the length of songs (except for the last one) keep things interesting with a length under four minutes. This way you can keep moshing around your room all by yourself without losing interest because of too long, boring passages. It’s all really straightforward, no bullshit whatsoever!
Enemy Is Us would do a splendid job on stage, creating a massive, grooving sound of Death/Thrash Metal. Be sure to check it out ‘cause many of you will like this. Show them horns f***ers!

Engel are back with a piece of heaven for any friend of Modern Metal. The comparison to In Flames is unavoidable but, in "Blood Of Saints", Engel easily surpass their forefathers’ most recent output. This is what the follow up to "A Sense Of Purpose", should have sounded like, and, with the addition of Niclas Engelin - Engel’s lead guitarist and namesake - to the In Flames ranks, future ventures just might.
Lead single “Question Your Place” - a powerfully kinetic, almost ‘Dance-Metal’, number littered with Electronic effects - opens the album with a massive Dubstep breakdown. That description may be enough to put you off on principle alone – after all, last time DJs mixed with Metal didn’t particularly yield the most favorable of results. However, the song is positively huge, with an equally massive, and crisp, production – populated by expertly timed, double-kick barrages and an infectiously catchy chorus, leading into the most satisfying of tempo drops – the whole while being propelled forth by an irresistible, pounding, Rammstein-esque, Industrial thump.
Should you still be put off by the Heavy, Industrial element of “Question Your Place”, fear not. It is followed up by the Thrashiest, most aggressive song on the album, in the form of “Frontlines”, whose main riff owes a substantial debt to, obvious influence, In Flames, which gives way to head-banging, ballad, “Feel Afraid”. The band continue on in this manner for the remainder of the album – churning out infectious, Gothenburg-induced Pop-Metal, almost to an entire neglect of the direction proposed by the album opener – though the Electronic element is ever present.
This adherence to traditional values over new frontiers of experimentation is both the album’s greatest strength and its greatest weakness. The band do the whole Post-Melodeath thing better than any other, retaining just enough of a hard edge to the guitars amid the squeaky clean production and Pop fluff, and plenty of killer lead-breaks to still be undeniably Metal. However, “Question Your Place” is twice as good a song as any other on the album, and it would have been nice to see some more hard hitters Pop their heads up throughout the album’s 38-minute duration.
"Blood Of Saints" is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Engel hold the balance between skill and brutality, melodies and dynamic, classic Metal influences and new-school characteristics. Listen to Modern Metal from Sweden at its best!!

Heading even further into Prog and using even more clean singing than before, the hour’s worth of music on the album hits the sweet spot where insane Black Metal meshes with compelling melodies. “Riitiir” is more Progressive and Experimental than the previous release, and much of it will be very pleasing to anyone who thought Opeth’s “Heritage” was a letdown, as it keeps the Metal Heavy without losing the softer stuff. There are several different styles mixed together and swapped out on any given song, but the core sound doesn’t get lost in all the changes, as there is a solid framework that holds everything together and keeps it all connected.
The changing musical landscape isn’t the only thing that refuses to stick to one style, as the vocals are also varied across the track listing. There are growls and grunts galore, but also plenty of clean singing, backing shouts, and deep spoken word segments. This melting pot creates some interesting atmospheres on individual tracks, like “Death in the Eyes of Dawn”, which nearly reaches a ‘90s Grunge feel, or the Gothic overtones of “Forsaken”.
It probably shouldn’t come as any big surprise that “Riitiir” is another knockout release from a band that consistently pushes the envelope and moves its sound forward. With a strong balance between Extreme Metal and clean Prog melodies, Enslaved’s latest album is at the forefront of Progressive Black Metal and a must-hear for fans of Opeth, Borknagar, or any music that combines opposing styles!!

Enthroned are, along with Cirith Gorgor, one of those bands who surely deserved more luck and attention by the whole scene. While Marduk and Dark Funeral are considered almost Rock Stars, this band continued releasing very good albums, without giving a damn about the other bands.
Back in 2004, they released “Xes Haereticum”, an album that surely could kick Marduk’s ass in that period. After a violent, brutal album like “Carnage In Worlds Beyond” it was difficult to put out another effort like that. But Enthroned did it. This album is simply great, simply Enthroned style!! They survived to a small period of crisis, with “Armoured Bestial Hell”, that anyway, it's not a bad album but they definitely returned stronger than ever with this one.
This is also the last album of the mythical singer Lord Sabathan, with his typical hellish, screamed voice. His screams are a trademark of Enthroned and they can be recognized among lots of bands.
"Crimsom Legions" opens this new effort and the first thing you can hear is the new drummer: amazing! He is fast as hell, technical and extremely good!! The guitar lines are, as usual for Enthroned, very inspired in "a violent melody", because they are violent Black influenced and very creative at the same time. The long, slow solos over the main rhythm guitar sounds create a sinister, black, epic atmosphere. Great song!! The legion marches on! The following "Dance of a Thousand Knives" is one of the most violent tracks of the album with a great solo break in the middle…dark atmosphere from hell…unique. "Blacker than Black" is a title that explains everything: in this case Enthroned, at the beginning, play very slowly and evil, but the excellent part comes from the fast break in the middle. The most “Epic Black” side of the band can be found in "Vortex of Confusion" song, with the guitar melodies alternated to furious Black influences and blast beats. The only instrumental song is "A.M.S.G." where the instruments are not so clear. They wanted to create a small, occult break to stop for a while the incredible violence of this album. "Night Stalker" song is just amazing; so influenced by melody in the guitar sound with the non-stop blast beats. Sabathan is still a great vocalist, especially in "Hellgium Messiah" song, where the most violent side of the band is shown, along with "Demon’s Claw". Total brutality!
One of the best Enthroned's work. Highly recommended for those who want an inspired, various and f*****g heavy Black Metal album!!

Re-release of the debut full-length album by the legendary Swedish Death Metal band.
With their monumental debut album, "Left Hand Path", Entombed crashed through the gates of the international Death Metal scene and foreshadowed the pivotal role that Scandinavia would soon play in the evolution of the then-burgeoning genre. These Swedes had earlier made ripples throughout the underground with their "But Life Goes On" demo (1989), as well as their prior demos as Nihilist, which had gotten them signed to Earache. "Left Hand Path" did more than make ripples upon its 1990 release, however - it came crashing like a tidal wave. Beyond doubt it raised the bar for Death Metal, significantly challenging American trailblazers like Death, Obituary and Morbid Angel. What Entombed did was take the extremity of Earache's stable of British Grindcore bands (Napalm Death, Carcass and Godflesh) and apply it to the elaborate songwriting structures of the aforementioned American Death Metal bands. It was the best of both worlds - over the top extremity complemented by intricate songwriting - and it wasn't more than a year or two later that everyone and their brother were following Entombed's lead (e.g., Carcass' "Necroticism" 1991, Napalm Death's "Harmony Corruption" 1990). But no one did it quite as well as Entombed does here on "Left Hand Path"; in fact, even the band itself struggled to follow up this album and quickly moved on stylistically.
As for the album itself, few of the songs stand apart from one another, apart from the epic title track, which opens the album and is highlighted by an eerie, unforgettable ambient break; rather, the album plays like a 40-minute wall of sound, one that is downright relentless. The band grinds away on song after song as monstrous vocalist Lars-Göran Petrov growls away like a caged, dying beast. The songs are fairly complex - they're only a few minutes long, granted, but they don't follow clear-cut patterns and are interwoven with numerous guitar solos, which particularly set Entombed apart from the Grindcore bands of the time. The band's dual-guitar attack allows for heavy soloing without ever forsaking the nonstop riffing, and everything - from the guitars to the vocals - sounds slightly overdriven, to the extent that the instruments blur into a swirling tide of noise yet remain slightly distinct. By the time you reach the end, you have to let out a big sigh - it's surely not an album you want to end, but then again, the finale does admittedly come as a calming relief.
As aforementioned, "Left Hand Path" is a monumental accomplishment, not only for Entombed but for Death Metal in general. The band would go on to record many more fine albums, but none would be quite as epochal and seminal as this one!!
Earache reissued the album on CD with two bonus tracks: "Carnival Leftovers" and "Premature Autopsy." These tracks don't sound out of place, but to an extent they do dilute the succinct impact of the album as it was originally intended.

Entombed, one of the premier Death Metal bands of the early '90s, boldly ventured into new musical territory with "Wolverine Blues", the band's third excellent album in a row. The album marked a move away from band's Death Metal roots to the more traditional Hard Rock and Metal style onward called Death 'n' Roll which they would continue to explore with future albums. "Wolverine Blues" is such a departure from past efforts, in fact, it's debatable whether this music even qualifies as Death Metal, given its standard Rock characteristics: comprehensible vocals, steady tempos, and verse-chorus-verse songwriting. None of these characteristics is associated with Death Metal, and indeed, purists might perceive Entombed's development on "Wolverine Blues" as an abandonment of the very principles that won the band such underground acclaim in the first place. Some purists might even go so far as to consider the album a sellout. Most reasonable listeners, however - including even the most impassioned Death Metal purists - will likely find much to appreciate on "Wolverine Blues". It's that impressive.
Album also worth mentioning that it features L-G Petrov back on vocals.
For sure, Entombed's previous albums, "Left Hand Path" (1990) and "Clandestine" (1991), were excellent, among the finest Death Metal efforts of their time, but their stylistic trappings were well evident. The growled vocals, breakneck tempo shifts, and amorphous song structures, to cite a few key characteristics, were fairly inaccessible to the type of mainstream Metal listener. "Wolverine Blues", on the other hand, is that rare album brutal enough for the Death Metal crowd yet at the same time accessible enough for the Metal mainstream. For instance, the vocals of Lars-Göran Petrov are mostly comprehensible; however, they're delivered with such ferocity, they're as powerful as, if not more so than, the most guttural Death-growl. Likewise, the guitars of Uffe Cederlund and Alex Hellid riff along at a steady tempo, but they're so heavy, they cut like a buzzsaw (as on "Heavens Die") and pummel away like a jackhammer ("Demon"). Along with the drumming of Nicke Andersson, which is hard-hitting yet never to the point of blastbeat, it's the songwriting of "Wolverine Blues" that is most removed from the confines of Death Metal.
These are especially distinctive songs by Entombed, every single one each unique in its own way and graced with a memorable hook, particularly the album standouts "Wolverine Blues", "Hollowman" and "Out of Hand." Clearly, a lot can be made of Entombed's bold venture into new musical territory with "Wolverine Blues", and you can bet Metalheads will debate the album's stylistic merits for years to come. What's beyond argument, though, is that "Wolverine Blues" is the third impressive effort in a row by one of the best Metal bands of the early '90s, and as impressive as the past two albums were, this one is by far the most inviting and most deserving of widespread recognition!!
Guitar World Magazine labeled "Wolverine Blues" as "1994’s best Death Metal effort and quite possibly the finest Death Metal album of this decade". In 2005, "Wolverine Blues" was ranked number 494 in Rock Hard magazine's book of "The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time".

Envenomed started in 2005, working their way through the ranks in terms of lineup changes, stylistic development, and eventually releasing their first self-titled EP in 2009. In the interim between that release and this current full-length record, in 2012 the band released a single for “Global Deception” – which happens to appear as the last track here. The quartet perform in a Melodic Thrash platform – opening up a lot of dynamics in terms of their abilities and songwriting horizons.
Opening with a galloping rhythm and a melodic riff, "Evil Unseen" wastes no time thundering into its infectious groove, and as “Will of Man” begins, you’re greeted by vocalist Anthony Mavrikis’ undeniably engrossing style. This is coupled by the excellent, pounding bass work of Liam Wagener and the consistent one-two punch of the guitars and drums; the former of which comprises the innovative, Metallic solos and riffs courtesy of Brendan Farrugia, with the latter maintaining the backbone of the band. Adam Bartleson’s drum lines course onwards like a voracious beast. At times, they beat an understated melody, and at others, they gorge themselves on the meaty rhythms, bouncing off the walls like this maniacal creature eagerly awaiting the moment it can burst out onto the stage, tearing down the proverbial gates with it, to spectacular and forceful rhythms as the double-bass notes kick in.
Perhaps one of the best things that works to Envenomed’s favour here is that "Evil Unseen" is different from most other Thrash Metal albums you’ll find today, and that becomes immediately noticeable just from the opening title track alone. With traditional Metal influences happily saturating much of its sound, Envenomed describe their sound as being Melodic Thrash, a title which in itself is intriguing. There are many elements that make themselves known throughout the listening experience of this album. Whilst the double-bass that make up those familiar Thrash Metal tones are there, the elements that unexpectedly rear their heads at various stages are interesting in themself. This comprises such things as engaging hooks, soaring choruses, and immersive guitar solos that are strewn throughout the mix. On its own, that mightn’t sound so revolutionary, but it is something that certainly helps this record to stand out from other Thrash Metal albums currently on the market.
Those who favor a cleaner vocalist with gang-oriented background support, twin guitars and lightning fast tempo changes should go gangbusters over Envenomed! Killer stuff here, folks!!

Featuring seven tracks and just under forty minutes of music, EpisTheme takes the listener on a journey through varying shades of Progressive Metal that could loosely be placed within the confines of late eighties era of Fates Warning, mixed with the dark and brooding nature of Deadsoul Tribe and Extreme Progressive Metal a la mid-period Opeth or a less djenty version of Meshuggah. That’s a lot of ground to cover, really it is, but EpsiTheme manages to scatter all of those influences throughout their debut album and manage to still sound unified.
Despite the band’s claim that their music is Progressive Death Metal, the music on Descending Patterns is better described as Dark and emotional Progressive Metal. Sure the band injects a good bit of heaviness throughout, like the staccato riffing during “Endless Apathy” or the Groovy chugging during “Blindside”, but their bread and butter so to speak comes when the band introduces their dark sense of melody. The melodic minor picking and Jazzy bass line during “Eyeland” and the ghostlike quietude during “Shades of May” show the band’s Progressive leanings, but with a darker shade than usual. Songs like “Silent Screaming” attempt to bridge the gap between the heavy and the serene, with smooth and clean vocals over high octane riffing and double kicked drums, but it sounds somewhat forced when piled on top of each other. Another example, “Erase That Frame”, which starts with a Prog Death lick, similar to "Still Life"-era Opeth, builds into a choppy track that really crumbles under its own weight, until a melodically infused, minor key segment breaks the stagnancy.
"Descending Patterns" is a solid album, this is truly and acts to watch out for, as they have the proper chops and their song writing skills are top notch. Riccardo Liberti and crew have released an enjoyable debut that fans of Progressive Metal (who don’t mind a little screaming in the mix) should enjoy! Fans of Progressive and/or Extreme Metal shouldn’t look past this great debut release, and what a debut release it is, because it has probably got more than a few spins in it if you give it the chance!!
