The downside to a success like "Thriller" is that it's nearly impossible to follow, but Michael Jackson approached "Bad" much the same way he approached "Thriller" - take the basic formula of the predecessor, expand it slightly, and move it outward. This meant that he moved deeper into Hard Rock, deeper into schmaltzy adult contemporary, deeper into hard dance - essentially taking each portion of "Thriller" to an extreme, while increasing the quotient of immaculate studiocraft.
Released nearly five years after it's predecessor, "Thriller" (1982), "Bad" saw Jackson exercise even more artistic freedom than he did with his two previous releases ("Off The Wall" and "Thriller"). Jackson composed nine of the album's eleven tracks, and received co-producer credit for the entire album. The album marked the final collaboration between Jackson and producer Quincy Jones.
Nine of the eleven songs (ten on vinyl version) on "Bad" were released as singles; one was a promotional single, and another was released outside of the United States and Canada. The only songs on the album, which were not released as commercial singles, were "Speed Demon" and "Just Good Friends".
With seven hit singles out of eleven tracks, "Bad" could easily be thought of as a greatest hits album. Songs such as "Bad" and "Dirty Diana" show a harder, more Rocking approach to the music. Jackson's universal appeal, along with his hiccup vocals and huge Pop sound, is still very much in focus.
The album continued Jackson's commercial success in the late 1980s, and garnered six Grammy Award nominations, winning two. Apart from commercial success, the album was well received by contemporary critics. Five of the singles hit No. 1 in the United States, while a sixth charted within the top ten, and a seventh charted within the top twenty on the Hot 100. "Bad" peaked at No. 1 in thirteen countries and charted within the top twenty in other territories. It was ranked No. 43 in the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time of the MTV Generation in 2009 by VH1, and number 202 in Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. "Bad" has sold an estimated 35 million copies worldwide, making it the eleventh best-selling album of all time. In 2017, the album was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America, denoting sales of over ten million copies in the United States.

It’s hard to believe now, but when Michael Jackson’s "Thriller" was released in the UK in time for Christmas 1982, there was an initial sense of misfire. In choosing the album's most lacklustre track, "The Girl Is Mine", as its lead single, the postcard delivered was mildly disappointing. The playful duet with Paul McCartney, chosen no doubt to emulate the success McCartney had had earlier the same year with Stevie Wonder on "Ebony And Ivory", was simply not what the listeners were expecting... It reached number eight on the UK chart, and the album sold well, but certainly not in the manner that the man who’d delivered "Off The Wall" should have done.
"Off The Wall" was a massive success, spawning four top ten hits (two of them number ones), but nothing could have prepared Michael Jackson for "Thriller". Nobody could have prepared anybody for the success of "Thriller", since the magnitude of its success was simply unimaginable - an album that sold 40 million copies in its initial chart run, with seven of its nine tracks reaching the Top Ten. This was a record that had something for everybody, building on the basic blueprint of "Off The Wall" by adding harder Funk, Hard Rock, softer ballads, and smoother Soul - expanding the approach to have something for every audience. That alone would have given the album a good shot at a huge audience, but it also arrived precisely when MTV was reaching its ascendancy, and Jackson helped the network by being not just its first superstar, but first black star as much as the network helped him. This all would have made it a success (and its success, in turn, served as a new standard for success), but it stayed on the charts, turning out singles, for nearly two years because it was really, really good!
By the following Christmas, "Thriller" had become the phenomenon it remains to this day. Singles kept dropping off the album like golden fruit from a platinum bough: the precision snap of that snare on UK number one "Billie Jean"; the raucous Eddie Van Halen guitar on "Beat It"; the groove-driven frenzy of "Wanna Be Startin' Something". It became apparent that this was a remarkable, ever-yielding Pop jukebox.
By 1984, the album got an extension on its lifecycle with the John Landis-directed video for "Thriller", which took the album from successful Pop record to cultural icon. Casting the then-clean cut, scandal-free singer as a werewolf in a 15-rated short film was a risk, but one that truly paid off! Soon enough "Thriller" had become a greatest hits package – seven of its nine tracks were issued as singles.

Jackson's first album released through Epic Records, and the first produced by Quincy Jones, whom he met while working on the 1978 film "The Wiz". Michael Jackson had released four solo albums before, but this was his breakthrough, the album that established him as an artist of astonishing talent and a bright star in his own right. This was a visionary album, a record that found a way to break Disco wide open into a new world where the Beat was undeniable, but not the primary focus - it was part of a colourful tapestry of lush Broadway ballads and strings, smooth Soul and Pop, R&B, Soft Rock, and alluring Funk. Its roots hearken back to the Jacksons' huge mid '70s hit "Dancing Machine", but this is an enormously fresh record, one that remains vibrant and giddily exciting years after its release. This is certainly due to Jackson's emergence as a blindingly gifted vocalist, equally skilled with overwrought ballads as driving dance-floor shakers, where his asides are as gripping as his delivery on the verses. It's also due to the brilliant songwriting, an intoxicating blend of strong melodies, rhythmic hooks, and indelible construction. Most of all, its success is due to the sound constructed by Jackson and producer Quincy Jones, a dazzling array of Disco Beats, Funk guitars, clean mainstream Pop, and unashamed schmaltz that is utterly thrilling in its utter joy. This is highly professional, highly crafted music, and its details are evident, but the overall effect is nothing but pure pleasure. "Off The Wall" was a significant departure from Jackson's previous work for Motown and was hailed as a major breakthrough for him. In retrospect, writers have hailed it a landmark release of the Disco era and, along with his next album "Thriller" (1982), among the greatest albums in history. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart and number one on the Top Black Albums chart, staying at number one on the latter for 16 weeks, and was an enormous critical success. Five Singles were released from the album. Jackson wrote three songs, including the Billboard Hot 100 number-one Single "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", his first solo number-one Single in the United States since "Ben" seven years prior. The second single, "Rock with You", also topped the chart. With following Singles "Off the Wall" and "She's Out of My Life" also reaching the US top 10, Jackson became the first solo artist to have four Singles from the same album reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
"Off The Wall" has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. On February 2, 2021, it was certified 9× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the US. At the 1980 Grammy Awards, it was nominated for two Grammy Awards, with Jackson winning "Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male" for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". In 2008, "Off The Wall" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Recorded on October 11, 1998, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, as part of The Velvet Rope Tour, the concert was broadcast live on HBO in the United States, and reached an audience of 15 million viewers in the US alone. The concert would also be broadcast on the cable channel's international networks at later dates.
DVD has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. It was nominated for 4 Emmy Awards, including "Outstanding Choreography", "Outstanding Lighting Direction", "Outstanding Music Direction" and "Outstanding Technical Direction/Camera/Video for a Special". It won the Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Technical Direction/Camera/Video for a Special" in 1999. The video was also nominated for "Outstanding Performance in a Variety Series/Special" and "Outstanding Variety Series/Special" at the 1999 NAACP Image Awards.
