One of the problems with looking back on a musical genre from a perspective years or decades removed from the core of the movement itself is that subsequent developments tend to obscure both a genre's origins and threads within a tradition that died out without offspring. As a result, interesting and deserving albums often get lost in the shuffle as reviewers reflect on those albums most “influential” upon later achievements. Death Metal pioneers Master are among those who have been shortchanged as a result of that phenomenon, and their 1990 masterpiece "On The Seventh Day, God Created… Master" remains a fascinating exploration both of the genre’s roots and of spaces it might have occupied had different paths been taken.
There are a couple of things that leap out immediately to even the casual listener. The first is the seeming primitivism of the music, with songs consisting of relatively brief, bludgeoning pieces driven by relentless rhythms, cyclic riffs and simple melodic hooks. The second is the realization that someone is playing some seriously insane, brilliantly constructed leads. In this case, that someone is Paul Masvidal, far exceeding anything he ever achieved with Cynic.
Beneath the surface simplicity, lies a creative spirit that at once recalls the primal birth of Death Metal (which Master was both present for and very much a driving force behind) and points the way to what the genre might have become. Very apparent are the genre’s Hardcore roots, Master here eschewing the Slayer-derived technical architecture that came to dominate most “modern” Death Metal in favour of structures that would not have been out of place on Discharge’s landmark "Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing" release (there are even a few appearances of the infamous D-beat). Within the unrelenting storm of brutal repetition, the music’s core meaning is encoded, a sheer primal rage dripping from thunderous cycles of power chords and the open threatened roar (again the Hardcore influence) of vocalist and chief songwriter Paul Speckman. To this, Master adds moments of ponderous reflection where songs collapse into a sort of high decibel dirge, an innate sense of how to tease melody from the infernal depths of dissonance, and the aforementioned Masvidal solos (and it cannot be overemphasized just how much these leads rip). What emerges is something that belies its own apparent crudity, becoming not so much a statement of blind anger or stymied alienation, but a masterful declaration of violent intent.
This album just rules! If you thought Master's self-titled release was the most brutal thing ever, then you need to check this one out too. While the previous album was a fun, evil Thrashing monster, this one is a monstrous Metal avenger descending from the holes in the beyond to erase all mankind save for it's head-banging brethren! The riffs are now ten times more brutal, the vocals now ten times as deep, as well as more guttural, while the drums perform more complicated rhythms interspersed with furious blasts of rapid-fire double bass. Master creates a wall of heavy guitar's and powerful vocals.
John Tardy of Obituary makes a guest appearance with a few backing growls on "Latitudinarian".
Heavy Death/Thrash, sounding a bit like Sepultura tone wise, but with a production that is too compressed/dense sounding. "On The Seventh Day, God Created… Master" is Master's masterpiece, well worth searching out for fan's of 80s/90s style Death Metal!

Even though this was the first official full-length recorded by Paul Speckmann, backed up by the soon-to-be cult line-up of former Death Strike comrade Chris Mittleburn on guitar and Bill Schmidt on drums, Master were already a revered name in the underground.
Master's first album was originally recorded in 1985 for Combat Recordings, but eventually shelved. In 1990, the album was first re-recorded in Chicago (later released by Hammerheart Records) but Nuclear Blast didn't approve this recording and had the band record the album again at Morrisound Studios. As it turned out, the third recording (which was eventually released as "Speckmann Project") was also not approved by Nuclear Blast and the Chicago recording was remixed instead by Scott Burns.
Packed with songs still legendary to this day (“Pay To Die”, “Funeral Bitch” or the instrumental “Terrorizer”) and a storming rendition of Black Sabbath’s “Children Of The Grave”, Master's self-titled album is still one of Death Metal "desert island" albums. "Mangled Dehumanization", "Pay To Die", "Re-entry And Destruction" and "The Truth" are songs originally written by Death Strike (pre-Master).

Master is the most well-known project of bassist, vocalist, and songwriter Paul Speckmann. Prominent in the early Extreme Metal Underground as one of the first Death Metal bands, they are also one of the most influential artists alongside Death and Possessed. Master helped invent the genre of Grindcore as well, expanding on a heavy influence of Motörhead, Venom and Slayer.
Originally released by Pavement Music on April 7th 1998, "Faith Is In Season" marks the true return to brutality for the band. Thick bass reproduction stands out on this raw, muscular recording, as well as lyrical content that is full of visceral emotion and antisocial resistance. This clearly is not the kind of album you can listen to while reading a nice book and drinking some warm tea. Between the pounding drums, merciless riffing, and, of course, Speckmann’s wonderfully hideous vocals, “Saints Dispelled” does nothing short of furiously, punishing your mind. Start to finish, the album consistently splits your spine and breaks your neck with the mightiness of Master's perfect idea of what Old-school Death Metal means!

After the great “On The Seventh Day God Created… Master”, Master returned with a new effort, basically a bit more in Thrash Metal style. It is hard to find a band that started as a Death/Thrash one in a period of Thrash Metal and becomes Thrash in a period of Death Metal. And Master did it with this album. Even less Death Metal as on “On the Seventh Day God Created… Master”, the album still great. The first thing you will notice is the production: a bit clearer and Thrashier. The guitars are not so tuned down anymore, and the vocals are less growling.
The opener “Constant Reminders” is still in Old-school style Death/Thrash Metal; a song that could easily have fitted well in Master’s previous works, with the fast bass drum and up-tempo. Most songs that follow are Thrashier and even have a bit of Punkier approach, going straight ahead. A cool different song is the nice Thin Lizzy cover of “Jailbreak”, where Master goes Hardrock. The superfast “Silver Spoon” is a good piece of Brutal Death/Thrash and a perfect track to end this album.
“Collection Of Souls” is an effort that is surely more Thrash Metal than Death Metal, but with lots of enjoyable moments!

This clearly is not the kind of album you can listen to while reading a nice book and drinking some warm tea. Between the pounding drums, merciless riffing, and, of course, Speckmann’s wonderfully hideous vocals, “Saints Dispelled” does nothing short of furiously, punishing your mind. Start to finish, the album consistently splits your spine and breaks your neck with the mightiness of Master's perfect idea of what Old-school Death Metal means!

After the great “On The Seventh Day God Created… Master”, Master returned with a new effort, basically a bit more in Thrash Metal style. It is hard to find a band that started as a Death/Thrash one in a period of Thrash Metal and becomes Thrash in a period of Death Metal. And Master did it with this album. Even less Death Metal as on “On the Seventh Day God Created… Master”, the album still great. The first thing you will notice is the production: a bit clearer and Thrashier. The guitars are not so tuned down anymore, and the vocals are less growling.
The opener “Constant Reminders” is still in Old-school style Death/Thrash Metal; a song that could easily have fitted well in Master’s previous works, with the fast bass drum and up-tempo. Most songs that follow are Thrashier and even have a bit of Punkier approach, going straight ahead. A cool different song is the nice Thin Lizzy cover of “Jailbreak”, where Master goes Hardrock. The superfast “Silver Spoon” is a good piece of Brutal Death/Thrash and a perfect track to end this album.
“Collection Of Souls” is an effort that is surely more Thrash Metal than Death Metal, but with lots of enjoyable moments!

Since the dawn of human intellectualism, self-aware individuals have sought solitude. Paul Speckmann finds his own solidarity in expressing apathy towards society... Master is the most well-known project of bassist, vocalist, and songwriter Paul Speckmann. Prominent in the early Extreme Metal Underground as one of the first Death Metal bands, they are also one of the most influential artists alongside Death and Possessed. Master helped invent the genre of Grindcore as well, expanding on a heavy influence of Motörhead, Venom and Slayer.
Originally released by Pavement Music on April 7th 1998, "Faith Is In Season" marks the true return to brutality for the band. Thick bass reproduction stands out on this raw, muscular recording, as well as lyrical content that is full of visceral emotion and antisocial resistance. Similar to 1990s contemporaries like Vader or Obituary, Master solidified their craft with “Faith Is In Season” and has since strayed minimally.

Being a true originator of Death Metal, with this album Master holds Death Metal, Thrash Metal, even some Punky moments and a Country song!
The album starts off with the Thrashy “You’ll Be Blamed”, which is reminiscent of the earlier "Collection Of Souls" album (though catchier) and with Abomination tendencies. Also, a song such as “Sign Up” is very Old-school Thrash Metal with those typical harsh Speckmann vocals. “The Serpents Tongue” is a straight forward uptempo Death Metal tune and the same goes for “Whatever, Wherever, Forever”. The song “The Perfect Family” comes closest to the D-beat Master we got used to from their first two albums. A very nice surprise is the song “Pistols, Whips and Coyotes”, which refers a lot to Macabre in terms of riffs although sounding slightly simpler because of the drums. Had Dennis The Menace played on this song, nobody would have noticed it isn’t Macabre. The Punky attitude of the album becomes most obvious on songs such as “Rights of Life” and “Envy” (which almost sound like 1987-1991 era Sodom). The most notable song is the Punk song “Another Day in Phoenix” which even has some clean vocals and incidentally is one of the highlights of the album. We also should not forget to mention closing song “Ring Of Fire”, a Johnny Cash cover including the trumpets.
"Spirit Of The West" is one of the most diverse and surprising Master albums yet!

The two new tracks on the recently released “Masterpieces” compilation already showed that Paul Speckmann wants to make it clear, after a 25-year career, where the true Old-school Death Metal hammer hangs. And that works excellently. "Four More Years Of Terror" in the title probably alludes to the second term of office of the Bush administration and contains superficially blunt (the number of breaks can generally be counted on one hand), but dead-on-the-point hammering Death-Thrash attacks with the usual Motörhead edge. The tempo is with wonderful penetrance, almost continuously in the classic eighties turnip Thrash beat, there is plenty of double bass, and Paul moos around wonderfully antisocially.
Paul Speckmann, who lives in exile in the Czech Republic, and his colleagues hurl some of the coolest simple riffs out of their stuffy sleeves in years!

It’s sort of hard to believe that Master has been around for almost 40 years now. We remember seeing these guys at nearly every club in the world back in the days, and front-man Paul Speckmann and crew never disappointed. The discography is an impressive collective of honest, brutal Death Metal that is straight from the book of said genre. From 1990 up to 2018 Master has produced solid to great releases, and they have never gone away and have become more brutal with age.
Released in April 2010 on Singapore’s Pulverised Records, "The Human Machine" marked off Master’s long-awaited triumphant return. Not that the respectable figure that had become Paul Speckmann had been sitting and doing nothing over the years… Far from it actually: after relocating from the US to the Czech Republic in 2000, the now 47-year-old veteran proceeded to build from scratch once again one of Death Metal's longest standing institutions, staying away from any commercial and trendy consideration. And after a string of four solid albums, his tenth full-length "The Human Machine" has confirmed that he has lost none of his venom. Despite being recorded, mixed and mastered in only six days, "The Human Machine" is not only boosted by one of their best productions in years and turbocharged riffs that could have easily been lifted from any of the band’s glorious past albums, but its ten songs make no secret what they’re all about, enhanced by Eliran Kantor's unequivocal brutal artwork.
"The Human Machine" is a mild kick in the chest, void of subtlety or reserve. It’s well-produced, fast-paced Death Metal that has a Technical side emanating from it, quite polished one might add. Maturity through Death Metal often means a band either waters down its style and subject in accordance to some imaginary borders, or they manage to progress from the roots and grow from within.
After the title-track hits in the face with a shotgun blast, “Twisted Truth” or “Suppress Free Thinking” are just some of Speckmann's most vicious lyrical attacks on a society “infected by governments and where people cannot think for themselves anymore” as he puts it with a grin. Whether you’d agree with him or not is of course up to you, but one thing is sure, Master has rarely sounded so pissed off and ready to bite the hand that tries to feed him.
The trio is amazingly talented and produces through a mere trio what some bands can not accomplish with five members. From start to finish, "The Human Machine" is a Death Metal lesson. This is the way Death Metal should be presented: fast, thought-provoking and legible. Another fine release from a vastly underrated band is ready for ingestion!
So f*ck the rules, join the revolution and listen to "The Human Machine" at maximum volume before it’s too late, and you’re brainwashed by our corrupted leaders…

After the impressive and intense "The Human Machine" from 2010, Master re-emerged with "The New Elite in 2012. 11 tracks of sadistic, blood-pumping Death Metal that is always steeped in Thrash Metal elements that satiate and subdue the wandering nomad fan of both genres. While there is no denying the absolute tenacity with which Master assembles and shatters the psyche within the span of any one album, "The New Elite" is a vile slab of musical vermin that is about as brutal as it comes while still retaining a perfect balance between guttural noise and intelligent Metal easily consumable in large portions.
Arguably one of the first Death Metal vocalists along with Kam Lee or Jeff Becerra, Speckmann’s throaty, almost hoarse delivery belches and bellows out over the din of some speedy guitar work that pummels the senses as much as it impresses. The initial first tracks in “The New Elite” and “Rise Up and Fight” show that Master is still at the top of its game, both lyrically and musically. Slower tracks like “Redirect the Evil” harken back to a time when Possessed and Dark Angel reigned supreme in the West Coast dominion. The sound is a total encompassing of the Swedish sound of the late 80s/early 90s and a modern Underground anger employed by only a few cellar-dweller bands that ‘get’ it.
We expected all of this and more from Master, and they failed to disappoint, as usual!

Another Death Metal milestone, build their own monument to the next level!
One thing we always understand when engaging a Master is that we will always get the same high quality of music. What you do come to expect (and always receive) is a well-constructed and integral release with music that really sums up Death Metal goodness. "The Witch Hunt" is a welcome addition to the long list of musical lessons main man Paul Speckmann has to teach. After the more than solid effort in "The New Elite", Speckmann still manages to incite and ignite the inner consciousness by delving into the political, social, and mental arenas with all of the subtly of a swarm of Asian hornets.
A fine element attributed to every Master release is the heavy, thick sound that manages to suffocate the willing listener. Musically, Master creates some old-school Chicago-style Metal music that sort of harkens back to the early 80s traditional brand with a little more kick to the throat. With the last few records, Master calls upon the Death, Speed, Traditional and Thrash Metal genres with such careful perfection that fans of the aforementioned areas would most likely dig them.
"The Witch Hunt", as usual, tackles everything from cretins occupying space in governmental positions of power (“Remove the Clowns”) to the overwhelming, subjugating feelings of suicide (“Another Suicide”). He’s never shied away from painting such brutal truths on everyday canvases that any awakened mind can employ and ingest.
"The Witch Hunt" provides a full-on aggressive look at the workings of the world around us and calls out the imperfections and flat-out wrongs orchestrated on a blinded, oblivious herd.

If you’re wondering why this band has such staying power, just listen to their 1991 album "On the Seventh Day God Created… Master" — the music speaks for itself.
Master’s sound always stayed rooted in the Extreme Metal of the 1980s, it has some Thrash Metal or Hardcore Punk accents. Lyrically they are also not cut from the same cloth as your typical Death Metal band, the themes are political and societal, we often get a bitter or snarky commentary on American society and politics. The playing is mechanically precise; what gives the music character are Speckmann’s grimy vocals. There is some real passion and anger in them, and you can tell that the music comes from a deep place. "Vindictive Miscreant" is a lesson in the Old-school, showing the band’s mastery, of song-based carnage and brutal, dirty heaviness.
