After the disastrous full-band Heavy Metal project of Sex & Religion, Steve Vai returned to recording solo with "Alien Love Secrets". It's a moodier, more atmospheric collection than his masterpiece, "Passion And Warfare", which makes it slightly revelatory. With the new sonic textures, the guitarist again demonstrates his fluid technique, which manages to never become completely mechanical. Considered by musician as EP, really this if full-length album.
Steve Vai: "The recording and release of "Alien Love Secrets" marked another turning point in my personal evolution. I felt independent again and immensely happy. I was more concerned with making the record that I wanted to make, and not worry about what some others thought I should be doing. It also marked the beginning of the professional relationship with my current manager, Ruta Sepetys. She is everything that you would never expect in the typical music biz manager. She is honest, driven, sincere, shrewd and compassionate all rolled into a powerful yet unassuming beautiful blond-haired frame".
Overall, this was a very interesting album for Steve Vai. Some tracks ("Bad Horsie", "Ya-Yo Gakk") are really out there in terms of the guitar effects and other... effects, while another is normal ("Die to Live"). Still another is in the Metal genre ("Kill the Guy with the Ball") while the other two are great ballads ("The Boy from Seattle", "Tender Surrender"). It just goes to show you how versatile and creative this man is. There's something for everyone on the CD!!
The album reached No. 125 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and remained on that chart for two weeks, as well as reaching No. 72 on the Dutch albums chart.

G3 is a legendary concert tour organized by guitarist Joe Satriani, that brings together three guitar virtuosos for solo sets and collaborative jams, featuring him alongside two other guitarists.
Since its inception in 1995, with the first tour in 1996 featuring Satriani, Steve Vai (Satriani's former student), and Eric Johnson, G3 has toured most years and has featured many guitarists, including Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Robert Fripp, Paul Gilbert, Steve Morse, Steve Lukather, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker, Adrian Legg, Phil Collen and many other special guests, including Tony MacAlpine, Johnny Hiland, Keith More, Chris Duarte, Andy Timmons, Neal Schon, Gary Hoey, Brian May, Billy Gibbons, Johnny A, George Lynch, Patrick Rondat, Guthrie Govan, Alejandro Silva, and Eric Sardinas.
Three DVDs from the tours were released to date: "G3: Live In Concert" (1997) with Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai, "G3: Live In Denver" (2004) with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen, and "G3: Live In Tokyo" (2005) with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and John Petrucci.
"G3: Live In Denver" was recorded at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, on October 20, 2003. It also includes a "Fretcam" feature, biographies, lighting plot diagrams, and more. Despite the name on the DVD case, when played the title that appears on the screen is "G3: Live From Denver" rather than "G3: Live In Denver". Along with the DVD, a Double CD album was released under the name "G3: Rockin' In The Free World (2004).
"G3" is a significant event in Rock guitar world, showcasing technical mastery and creative collaboration, inspiring guitarists globally.
