The fourth full-length studio album by Israeli Post-Grunge/Stoner/Hard Rock band.
When Shadow Rebels set out to craft an album, they don't just create music – they compose sonic narratives that resonate with poignant themes and dynamic soundscapes. "Black & White Times" marks a significant chapter in the band's storied career, with moving to more Classical Hard Rock and Post-Grunge, and less Progressive style, blending contemporary realities with deep-seated emotions.
The album carries a significant weight in the band's history. It is the final album with longtime guitarist Rustam Safaraliev, who played on six tracks, and it introduces the new guitarist, Uzi Eliyahu, who completes the album with his contributions to two tracks. This transition adds another layer of depth and intrigue to the album, making it a transitional and evolutionary piece for the band.
Also, the signature moment is that all the tracks of the album were released as Singles, before album release. "Nobody's Land" and "In the End of the War" are hard-hitting commentaries on modern-day conflicts, specifically focusing on the ongoing wars in Israel and Ukraine. The raw, evocative lyrics coupled with powerful instrumentation conjure a vivid picture of chaos and resolve. "Cry" bravely explores the manipulation of emotional expression, using tears as a metaphorical weapon. It's a haunting track that will leave listeners with much to ponder. “Tomorrow” begins like meditating Indian chant; this ballad takes us deep into ironic lyrics about human relationships. In the wake of recent global events, "Deepest Gloom" dives into themes of depression and mental health. Shadows Rebels are unafraid to confront the dark realities that many face, offering both solace and solidarity. As a shift in tone, energetic and uplifting, "Water Spirit" pays homage to the healing power of nature. It's both a breath of fresh air and a call to reconnect with our natural roots. "Plastic Duck" is an intriguing track that tells the quirky story of someone afraid of a plastic duck – metaphorically referring to a girl heavily reliant on cosmetics and appearing out of proportion. It's a clever critique wrapped in a playful package. The eponymous track, "Black & White Times", is a proto-Hard Rock masterpiece, painted with layers of classic power trio sound. It's a fitting close to the era, encapsulating the varied themes and stylistic breadth of the entire album.
Shadow Rebels have always excelled in expanding their musical palette, and "Black & White Times" is not an exception. From proto-Hard Rock to Progressive Metal and heartfelt power ballads, the album offers a panoramic view of the band's capabilities. With rustling violins, ethereal keyboards, resonant sitar, and an array of other instruments, each track stands as a testament to their meticulous attention to detail and affinity for diverse sounds.
"Black & White Times" is not merely an album; it's an experience of Shadow Rebels. It navigates through war, psychological battles, and the highs and lows of human emotion with both courage and grace. For fans old and new, this album is a compelling journey that cements Shadow Rebels' reputation as fearless creators who aren't afraid to push the boundaries of their artistry.
For fans of Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Alice In Chains, etc.
