The third full-length studio album by legendary British Doom/Death Metal band.
"Shades Of God" integrated more melodies and subtle passages that marked the band's transitioning sound. It features the use of growling noticeable in the band's previous efforts, although shows the beginning of the transition to more clean vocals seen on the album "Icon". "Shades Of God" sound can be described as a hybrid, perhaps the album that helped define Paradise's experimental nature the most. This is an album which looked from all directions is flawless in its Progressive experimentations with the now perfected sound from the previous album "Gothic".
You can sense how this album was the most important in the whole progression of Paradise Lost. It has a feeling of many genres mix up and integrated with each other, some songs have a Progressive feel to them, while others are still with an underlined Death influence. Still, the predominant genre in this album is the hybrid of Doom/Gothic Metal - a genre that Paradise helped laid the foundation for. The sound has the brutality mixed with the monotony/minimalistic feel, that later will dominate Paradise's sound.

The eleventh full-length studio album by legendary British Gothic Doom/Death Metal band.
This band, after more than 20 years on scene, still maintain relevance. But now darker and heavier. "In Requiem" is at first a continuum from where they’ve stopped with "Symbol Of Life", but at the same time it is a step back (meant positively) to the early 90s where band was more aggressive and tight than the last few albums have witnessed. The album features some harsher vocals by Nick Holmes, similar to the style he had on "Icon". "In Requiem" is about finding the balance between brutality and empathy, between horror and beauty." - Greg Mackintosh/Paradise Lost.
The album is filled with dark lyrics and changing moods raging from life to death and simply amazing atmosphere and emotions. In that sense all 11 tracks are dark and heavy and the music is raw, organic and unpolished.
The song "Sedative God" was originally intended for the previous Paradise Lost album, but was never recorded at that time. Drummer Jeff Singer, who played on the aforementioned album, was not an official member of the band back then until the first single of this album, "The Enemy", although he left Paradise Lost one year after this album's release.

After several years of experimentation and musical growth, Paradise Lost released their career-defining album, "Icon". On this release, they demonstrated the streamlined approach that would be present on all of their following albums and would eventually become their calling card. Gone are the Progressive tendencies showcased on their previous album, "Shades Of God". The end result is a very focused album that combines all of Paradise Lost's strengths in a concise format. The album marked a departure from the Death/Doom sound of their early work, and was the last album to feature Matthew Archer on drums. The lumbering rhythm guitars along with the steady rhythm section serve as the platform for the trade-offs between Gregor Mackintosh's signature leads and Nick Holmes's gruff vocals. The simple, yet incredibly effective, guitar work is the first indication of the band's new approach - combining their atmospheric and gloomy character with the bare-bones Heavy Metal style, that became so popular after the release of Metallica's "Black Album". The second indication would be Nick's new vocal style, which also seemed to be influenced by mid-career James Hetfield. Despite the fact that Paradise Lost were obviously paying attention to the then-current trends in Metal and implemented those characteristics in their sound, they managed to maintain a strong sense of identity and avoid becoming a pale Metallica clone. The stripped down arrangements and structures ended up highlighting the strong songwriting that is showcased throughout the album, as each haunting melody is given plenty of room to echo and grasp the listener. Although the band received some criticism for significantly toning down the heavier aspects of their sound, "Icon" created quite the buzz upon its release and elevated Paradise Lost's profile to new heights.
The band strikes a good balance between the more energetic numbers and the slower ones, while maintaining consistency throughout the entire album. Songs like "Remembrance", "Dying Freedom", "Widow", "Weeping Words" and "Poison" showcase the band's ability to convincingly execute powerful Heavy Metal tracks at a higher tempo without losing focus on the melodic and atmospheric aspects of the song. And even though their previous albums also featured some quality up-tempo material, the much improved production job and the more concise songwriting help in elevating the aforementioned tracks to new heights. Among the slower songs on the album you'll find career highlights such as "Joys of the Emptiness", "Colossal Rains" and "True Belief", which manage the impossible task of being both soul-crushingly depressing and incredibly infectious, which, in a way, sums up perfectly the essence of Paradise Lost.
The word "evolution" often comes to mind when one examines the process-driven career of Paradise Lost, and "Icon" presents a significant step in that process. It marks the point where the band went from being an exciting and innovative young group in search of its voice to a confident, fully realized force with a clear sense of identity and vision. An absolute highlight in the band's stellar discography!
In February 2018, "Icon" was inducted into the Decibel Magazine Hall of Fame, becoming the second Paradise Lost album to be featured in the Decibel Hall of Fame (alongside "Gothic"), with the magazine naming it influential to the development of the Gothic Metal subgenre.

On this, their modest debut, Paradise Lost helped define the rules of Doom/Death Metal: grinding, de-tuned anthems of woe topped with Death metal-style guttural vocals. Yet, even as they were laying down the blueprint, Paradise Lost was already reaching for realms unknown to their then-amateurish abilities and latent promise. This is evident in all but the most primitive tracks here, but only the occasionally memorable riff or discreet melody contained in tracks like "Paradise Lost", "Rotting Misery", "Deadly Inner Sense", and "Breeding Fear" (which introduces a female vocalist) even hint at the band's potential. 
The tracks "Our Saviour" and "Frozen Illusion" were rerecorded in other Paradise Lost albums, "Tragic Illusion 25 (The Rarities)" and "Medusa".

"Gothic" was the album responsible for a whole sub-genre: Gothic Doom Metal, upon its release in 1991. Creating a more melancholy & atmospheric form of Dark Extremity, with the introduction of Gregor Mackintosh’s highly distinctive & unmistakable lead guitar melodies, Paradise Lost was quickly brought to the forefront as one of the pioneering bands of the early nineties, becoming highly influential to a generation of subsequent greats.
The "Gothic" album was recorded in late 1990 - early 1991 at the renowned Academy Studios in Yorkshire; a studio responsible for classic recordings from bands such as My Dying Bride, Anathema, Cradle Of Filth, among many others.
"Gothic", though a perfectly logical step in retrospect, seemed at the time of its release like something of a departure for the band's earliest fans. This perception was largely enforced by the less deliberate, more energetic arrangements given to songs like "Dead Emotion" and "Shattered", not to mention Paradise Lost's slightly cleaner approach to guitar crunch. Further standouts such as the title track, "Eternal", and "The Painless" also made cautious use of keyboards and even female vocals, which together added atmospheric nuances to the group's ultra-depressive power chords. Gaining in confidence, young vocalist Nick Holmes' growling style was still utterly unmusical here, but at least he was making himself heard over the band's monolithic din. His lyrics were also becoming increasingly more mature, and this maturity would help push Paradise Lost ahead of its demon-obsessed competitors with each subsequent album.
In June 2005, "Gothic" was inducted into the Decibel Magazine "Hall of Fame", becoming the fifth album overall to be featured there.

The fourteenth full-length studio album by legendary British Gothic Doom Metal band
This album shows the band returning to their death-doom roots, mixed with elements of the gothic metal sound they are most known for. Paradise Lost proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that heading musically backwards, or accurately pronounced as “back to the roots”, is as worthy as solid gold. The evolving spirituality of Doom, mostly slow tempo semi Death and breaths of Gothic Metal within the album spread the awareness of much older days. The production values may not be a means of appraisal, but as far as the material goes, it came to be a long time yearning to the classic era of the band, a type of longing that fulfilled itself right here on this album. “The Plague Within” reinstated the profound growl vocals of Nick Holmes to Paradise Lost. The anguish within the Doomed melodies of the Mackintosh nature remained strong, painful, crying out, sending their shivers across the skin, creating a haze, which the band lost at some point. When it comes to the guitar riffs, it has always been simple, yet throughout “The Plague Within” it felt darker, almost escalating into a devouring beast in black. Paradise Lost have always been keeping their rhythm guitar riffs simple, palm muted chunks of death along with open chords that just felt true. And of course, what kind of tightness and scenery of damnation can be achieved without the kind of pristine rhythm section that this band has. Picture a blend of the first four albums, and you shall find their presence slowly forming on this release. It is evident that the band didn’t forget the last five years, and it also attributed to the music. In general, it is not a process anymore, it is the real thing back and alive before you, PARADISE LOST crossed back in full, and in quality, to the early 90s, somewhat filthier, murkier and condemned to forever bliss of mourning.
Paradise Lost are once again refining the chemical equation to their sonic alchemy with the kind of creative invincibility few can deliver. Blessed with stark contrasts of crushing heaviness and melancholic melodies, “The Plague Within” is a fantastic Gothic Metal opus, perfectly produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano (Ghost BC, Ulver, Cathedral) and visually rounded-off by art courtesy of Zbigniew M. The fifteenth full-length studio album by legendary British Gothic Doom Metal band.
Two years after the critically acclaimed "The Plague Within", Paradise Lost returned with yet another full-length studio recording and, it was pretty much the logical continuation of the path taken by its predecessor. "Medusa" proved that the band’s rekindled flirtation with their death doom roots was more than a mere aberration, bringing us more music in the vein of the previous album’s grimmest and most desolate cuts from the crypt.
Don’t let the magenta-colored background of the front cover fool you: "Medusa" is one of the band’s blackest and bleakest efforts to date, with eight crushing tunes that have much more in common with, say, "Gothic" or "Shades Of God" than with "Icon" or "Draconian Times", the last two of course representing the band’s most heralded era. 2012’s "Tragic Idol" marked a brief return to that mid-nineties sound many of their fans love and revere, and we can assume that another record in the same vein must have been commercially tempting. Instead, Paradise Lost decided to throw their fans a curveball with "The Plague Within" and then doubled it up with the even more rugged and harsh "Medusa". Kudos to these stubborn Yorkshiremen for continuing to defy expectations and still being able to surprise people even after thirty years in the business!
"Medusa", even more so than "The Plague Within", is a highly consistent but not an instantly accessible affair, at least not for those who prefer the band’s mellower, velvety side. One of the major points of criticism for many listeners is the way Greg Mackintosh’s signature lead-guitar harmonies take a back seat on "Medusa", which is geared more towards crushing Doom riffs and a barren atmosphere of blackness and despair rather than one of melancholic grandeur. However, the lack of overt melodicism on most of the other tracks can make the raw and unrelenting "Medusa" a tough pill to swallow for some. In fact, the true strength of "Medusa" lies in just that relentlessness and homogeneity. Indeed, we did get what we were expecting: eight songs of Doom Metal, with the modernity of the production balancing the Death elements that are included. Fans of broad guitar tones should rejoice at the rumbling heft of the riffs, most of which crush down at a slow pace and with juddering heavy drumming from new member Waltteri Väyrynen.
"Medusa" is an excellent addition to Paradise Lost's already towering discography. This album is like a drug for your heart, mind and soul. If you like to discover your dark side and embrace it to escape from reality, buy this record, that is one of the few highlight releases of 2007. Lay down and bask in it!

This is evident in all but the most primitive tracks here, but only the occasionally memorable riff or discreet melody contained in tracks like "Paradise Lost", "Rotting Misery", "Deadly Inner Sense", and "Breeding Fear" (which introduces a female vocalist) even hint at the band's potential. 
The tracks "Our Saviour" and "Frozen Illusion" were rerecorded in other Paradise Lost albums, "Tragic Illusion 25 (The Rarities)" and "Medusa".
"Lost Paradise" serves as a welcome rediscovery for serious fans!

Remastered re-release of the second full-length studio album by legendary British Gothic Death/Doom Metal band.
The album, which introduced the world to Gothic Doom Metal!
"Gothic" was the album responsible for a whole sub-genre: Gothic Doom Metal, upon its release in 1991. Creating a more melancholy & atmospheric form of Dark Extremity, with the introduction of Gregor Mackintosh’s highly distinctive & unmistakable lead guitar melodies, Paradise Lost was quickly brought to the forefront as one of the pioneering bands of the early nineties, becoming highly influential to a generation of subsequent greats.
The "Gothic" album was recorded in late 1990 - early 1991 at the renowned Academy Studios in Yorkshire; a studio responsible for classic recordings from bands such as My Dying Bride, Anathema, Cradle Of Filth, among many others.
"Gothic", though a perfectly logical step in retrospect, seemed at the time of its release like something of a departure for the band's earliest fans. This perception was largely enforced by the less deliberate, more energetic arrangements given to songs like "Dead Emotion" and "Shattered", not to mention Paradise Lost's slightly cleaner approach to guitar crunch. Further standouts such as the title track, "Eternal", and "The Painless" also made cautious use of keyboards and even female vocals, which together added atmospheric nuances to the group's ultra-depressive power chords. Gaining in confidence, young vocalist Nick Holmes' growling style was still utterly unmusical here, but at least he was making himself heard over the band's monolithic din. His lyrics were also becoming increasingly more mature, and this maturity would help push Paradise Lost ahead of its demon-obsessed competitors with each subsequent album.
In June 2005, "Gothic" was inducted into the Decibel Magazine "Hall of Fame", becoming the fifth album overall to be featured there.
