Album was released on July 27, 1984 through the independent record label Megaforce Records and was re-released on November 19, 1984 by Elektra Records. "Ride the Lightning" is the last Metallica album to credit former member, Dave Mustaine.
"Kill 'Em All" may have revitalized Heavy Metal's Underground, but "Ride The Lightning" was even more stunning, exhibiting staggering musical growth and boldly charting new directions that would affect Heavy Metal for years to come. Incredibly ambitious for a one-year-later sophomore effort, "Ride The Lightning" finds Metallica aggressively expanding their compositional technique and range of expression. Every track tries something new, and every musical experiment succeeds mightily. The lyrics push into new territory as well - more personal, more socially conscious, less Metal posturing. But the true heart of "Ride The Lightning" lies in its rich musical imagination. There are extended, progressive epics; tight, concise groove-rockers; thrashers that blow anything on "Kill 'Em All" out of the water, both in their urgency and the barest hints of melody that have been added to the choruses. “Ride The Lightning” retains the speed of “Kill 'Em All” on songs like "Trapped Under Ice" and "Fight Fire with Fire", but also contains the first of Metallica's longer, more intricate tracks, such as "Fade to Black" and the nearly 9-minute closing instrumental "The Call of Ktulu".

The true birth of Thrash Metal! The album is acclaimed for combining the rawness and fast tempos of Speed Metal and Punk Rock with the technicality and sharpness of New Wave of British Heavy Metal, influenced by Diamond Head, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Black Flag and the Misfits, making it one of the earliest and most influential Thrash Metal albums ever recorded.
James Hetfield's highly technical rhythm guitar style drives most of the album, setting new standards of power, precision and stamina. First official re-release of the first EP by legendary American Thrash Metal band.
EP of cover songs to "break-in" new member Jason Newsted, the "Garage Days Re-Revisited" (sub)title is a reference to side B of the "Creeping Death" single. The Extended Play album consists entirely of covers of late-70's and early 80's New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands and Hardcore / Punk music, rehearsed in Lars Ulrich's soundproofed garage and then recorded in Los Angeles over the course of six days. It is the band's first recording to feature its new bassist Jason Newsted, and also the band's first release following the death of second bassist Cliff Burton.
With Metallica scheduled to play the 1987 Monsters Of Rock Festival at Castle Donington, the band's UK label Vertigo Records suggested them to release an Extended Play album for the situation. Songwriting attempts with new bassist Jason Newsted only resulted in a demo for "Blackened", and frontman James Hetfield broke his arm skateboarding, so the band resorted to recording covers. This is reminiscent to how the European "Creeping Death" single had led to two B-sides that were cover songs, labeled "Garage Days Revisited". Newsted used his construction experience to install soundproofing on Lars Ulrich's garage in El Cerrito, California, where the band would rehearse.
Five-tracks covers EP seemed to confirm that not only was everything back on track after the death of Cliff Burton, but that despite their impending fame, they were still very much in tune with the grubby Metal and Punk scenes that spawned them. You might reasonably argue that the entire NWOBHM nostalgia industry grew from this one record, as these spiky, loose-limbed assaults on songs by Diamond Head, Holocaust and Budgie were most fans’ introduction to those bands’ oeuvres. Of the three, Diamond Head’s "Helpless" remains the highlight, while Newsted’s thunderous intro to Budgie’s "Crash Course In Brain Surgery" is still amongst the most joyous noises you will ever hear. No wonder the fans took to him so readily. Meanwhile, Metallica’s ferocious take on Killing Joke’s "The Wait" (not included on the EP’s originally UK release) is an eerie joy and, most famously, their gleeful decimation of the Misfits’ "Last Caress/Green Hell" proudly muddied the waters between Punk and Metal and, ultimately, must have bought Glenn Danzig at least one new house. After "Last Caress/Green Hell" has ended, there are a few seconds of Metallica covering, deliberately out of key, the intro to Iron Maiden's "Run to the Hills", then it's faded out (Iron Maiden responded to this in 1992 on the B-Side to "Be Quick Or Be Dead").
Yes, the whole thing has been remastered and sounds great, but this was never an exercise in sonic perfection: instead, crank it up and enjoy the sound of one of Metal’s greatest ever bands saluting their heroes and kicking out the jams!!

Special Japanese Promo-edition of the third single by the legendary American Thrash Metal band.
It was also released as the third and final single from their fourth album "...And Justice For All". It is one of the band's most popular songs and has remained a permanent live staple since the release of the album, making this the most played song from the album "...And Justice for All". Like "Fade to Black" and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", the song starts off slow and clean, but as the song goes on, becomes heavier and faster, leading up to a tapping solo by Kirk Hammett and a dual guitar section by Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield.
"One" was written in November 1987 by Metallica's principal composers James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. The song's theme and lyrics are based on Dalton Trumbo's 1939 novel "Johnny Got His Gun", telling the tale of a soldier who is hit by a land mine and loses his limbs, eyes, ears and mouth. His mind functions perfectly, however, leaving him trapped inside his own body (which could also be described as a special form of locked-in syndrome). Trumbo directed the movie adaptation in 1971, from which the footage for the "One" music video is taken.
"One" is a favorite of many Metallica fans, and thus is a fixture of the band's live performances. When played live, the song is usually played with guitars tuned down by one semitone (a permanent fixture of their studio and live work since the post Metallica era, save for "Death Magnetic" in the case of the former) and is preceded by pyrotechnics and the same sounds of war such as machine guns, and bombs exploding as heard on the recorded version. The song also features heavy strobe lighting during the heavier half of the song, namely before the Hammett solo.
"One" was band's first Top 40 hit single, reaching number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Outside of North America, they are distributed through Universal Music Group as they remain signed to Vertigo Records in the United Kingdom. "...And Justice For All" marked the band's gear-shift from Underground heroes to the major league. Containing the band's first Top 40 Single, the horror-filled "One", the album's hard-hitting lyrics and darkly intense feel delighted their ever-growing fanbase, reaching number six on the Billboard chart.
After years of refusing to release music videos, Metallica released its first for "One". The video was controversial among fans, who had valued the band's apparent opposition to MTV and other forms of mainstream music. Slant Magazine ranked it number 48 on their list of the "100 Greatest Music Videos", saying that Metallica "evoke a revolution of the soul far more devastating than that presented in the original text". The guitar solo was ranked number seven in Guitar World's compilation of the "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" of all time. Additionally, website Noisecreep classed the song ninth among the "10 Best '80s Metal Songs".
The album was acclaimed by music critics for its depth and complexity, although its dry mix and nearly inaudible bass guitar were criticized. It was included in The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics' poll of the year's best albums, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989, controversially losing out to Jethro Tull in the ill-fated Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental category. The Single "One" earned Metallica their first Grammy Award in 1990 (and the first ever in the Best Metal Performance category).
Although Metallica's music was considered unappealing for mainstream radio, "...And Justice For All" was highly successful in the US. It became Metallica's best-selling album upon release, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200, where it charted for 83 weeks. The tenth full-length studio album by legendary American Thrash Metal band.
Like "Death Magnetic", Metallica’s latest, "Hardwired… To Self-Destruct", is an attempt to revisit their early days. The only difference is that this time they sound like they’re actually trying, and maybe even having a bit of fun. It is band's first studio album in eight years following, marking the longest gap between two studio albums in the band's career. It is also their first studio album not to feature songwriting credits from lead guitarist Kirk Hammett since he joined the band in 1983. Allegedly, this is due to the guitarist losing an iPhone filled with riffs just prior to recording -- and he's also diminished in terms of solos, leaving an album as a showcase for Metallica's musical constructions. Moreover, its band’s first studio album released through their own label, Blackened.
Sprawling over two discs when it could have fit onto one (an aesthetic choice certainly meant to evoke memories of 1988's double LP "...And Justice for All"), "Hardwired...To Self-Destruct" does indeed rage, roaring out the gate with a title track where James Hetfield bellows "We're so f**ked/S**k out of luck". That palpable desperation recalls the free-floating angst that fueled Metallica's '80s, but "Hardwired...To Self-Destruct" doesn't find the quartet scrambling to sound as ferocious as they did during their heyday. Often, they do unleash the fury - "Moth into Flame" gallops forward in a manner reminiscent of "Battery" - but there's no denying that Metallica are an older band now, either incapable or uninterested in maintaining that intensity over the course of a full double album. When they slow down, it's not exclusively to churn and brood. "Murder One", a salute to departed Motörhead leader Lemmy, may belong in that category, but "Am I Savage?" teeters between ominous dirge and intricate transitions, while "Dream No More" has a backbeat that nearly swings. "ManUNKind" also has a bit of buried Funk in its rhythms and that, along with the preponderance of complicated suites, is a clue that "Hardwired...To Self-Destruct" is primarily the work of Hetfield and Lars Ulrich…
Make no mistake - "Hardwired..." is easily Metallica’s best album since 1991’s landmark self-titled LP. Still, the band couldn't return at a better time...
The album was Metallica's sixth consecutive studio album to debut at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 291 000 album-equivalent units in its first week, of which 282,000 were pure album sales. The remaining 9 000 units comprised 34 000 song purchases and 9.3 million streams. It was the third-largest debut of the year in the US on pure sales. The album slipped to number 3 on the Billboard 200 in its second week, selling 75,000 units, including 71 000 copies. "Hardwired... To Self-Destruct" was the best selling Heavy Metal album of 2016 in the US and seventh overall, with 516 000 copies sold by the end of December. It became the highest selling debut of the year in Germany with more than 200 000 copies shipped in its first week, earning a Platinum Certification. "Hardwired... To Self-Destruct" had the biggest opening week of 2016 in Australia with 26 000 copies sold, debuting at number one on the ARIA chart. Overall, the album was number one in 57 countries, entered the top three in 75 nations and the top five in 105 countries. On April 12, 2017, the album went Platinum. The sixth full-length studio album by the legendary American Heavy Metal band.
The album garnered backlash from a portion of the band's fan base because of a shift in tone from the band's previous efforts ("Load" features a Bluesier sound than the band's previous outings). This time it was more Heavy Metal album according to previous Thrash Metal albums.
For a hardcore pre-"Load" Metallica fan, "Load" will come as a bit of a surprise. The album sounds a bit insecure, because Metallica seem to be in unfamiliar territory, trying to get a bit deeper than they normally would. It also has a bit of a Western sounding feel to it, from songs like "Ronnie" and "The Outlaw Torn". However, there are some rocking songs on this album, that still have the essence of Metallica but still sounds different.
James Hetfields lyrics here are much more deeper and complex than other albums, which is a nice surprise. "Mama Said" for example is a touching song of James's feelings towards his dead mother, and is very personal. Fans who likes James' lyrics from previous albums may find these lyrics frustrating, seeing as there is more than the literal meaning to them. That said, songs like "Cure" see Hetfield trying a bit too hard to be poetic, but "Cure" is essentially the only to be trying too hard, the rest are of a higher standard than previous albums.
"Load" sold 680,000 units in its first week, making it the biggest opening week for Metallica and the biggest debut of 1996.
It's debuted (and spent four consecutive weeks) at #1 on Billboard 200. The album has sold over 5,000,000 copies in United States and is certified 5x Platinum by the RIAA.
This album is very far from the "Black Album", and some fans may be put off by this, however, it is still a fantastic album. The songs here are just as rocking as other albums, but wanting to dig a bit deeper, which is a good thing! Buy this album and see for yourself!!

Metallica intended to sell their 2003 comeback album, "St. Anger", with a series of infomercials by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, directors of the acclaimed documentaries "Brother's Keeper" and "Paradise Lost". Bizarre as that failed plan sounds, what's even more bizarre is that those infomercials morphed into the feature-length film "Some Kind of Monster" (its title taken from an album track on "St. Anger"), which documented the making of "St. Anger", including the group therapy sessions that helped the band pull back from the brink of breakup. All movies need a soundtrack, so one was cobbled together to coincide with the release of the movie.
The name “Some Kind Of Monster” came from vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield describing the lyrics to producer Bob Rock being about a Frankenstein creature or "some kind of monster". Bob Rock Performed bass on "Some Kind of Monster".
The live B-sides are all taken from the previous single release "The Unnamed Feeling" EP. All live tracks recorded at Le Bataclan, Paris, June 11th 2003.
"Some Kind Of Monster" was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2005 but lost to Velvet Revolver for the song "Slither".

EP of cover songs to "break-in" new member Jason Newsted, the "Garage Days Re-Revisited" (sub)title is a reference to side B of the "Creeping Death" single. The Extended Play album consists entirely of covers of late-70's and early 80's New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands and Hardcore / Punk music, rehearsed in Lars Ulrich's soundproofed garage and then recorded in Los Angeles over the course of six days. It is the band's first recording to feature its new bassist Jason Newsted, and also the band's first release following the death of second bassist Cliff Burton.
With Metallica scheduled to play the 1987 Monsters Of Rock Festival at Castle Donington, the band's UK label Vertigo Records suggested them to release an Extended Play album for the situation. Songwriting attempts with new bassist Jason Newsted only resulted in a demo for "Blackened", and frontman James Hetfield broke his arm skateboarding, so the band resorted to recording covers. This is reminiscent to how the European "Creeping Death" single had led to two B-sides that were cover songs, labeled "Garage Days Revisited". Newsted used his construction experience to install soundproofing on Lars Ulrich's garage in El Cerrito, California, where the band would rehearse.
Five-tracks covers EP seemed to confirm that not only was everything back on track after the death of Cliff Burton, but that despite their impending fame, they were still very much in tune with the grubby Metal and Punk scenes that spawned them. You might reasonably argue that the entire NWOBHM nostalgia industry grew from this one record, as these spiky, loose-limbed assaults on songs by Diamond Head, Holocaust and Budgie were most fans’ introduction to those bands’ oeuvres. Of the three, Diamond Head’s "Helpless" remains the highlight, while Newsted’s thunderous intro to Budgie’s "Crash Course In Brain Surgery" is still amongst the most joyous noises you will ever hear. No wonder the fans took to him so readily. Meanwhile, Metallica’s ferocious take on Killing Joke’s "The Wait" (not included on the EP’s originally UK release) is an eerie joy and, most famously, their gleeful decimation of the Misfits’ "Last Caress/Green Hell" proudly muddied the waters between Punk and Metal and, ultimately, must have bought Glenn Danzig at least one new house. After "Last Caress/Green Hell" has ended, there are a few seconds of Metallica covering, deliberately out of key, the intro to Iron Maiden's "Run to the Hills", then it's faded out (Iron Maiden responded to this in 1992 on the B-Side to "Be Quick Or Be Dead").
Yes, the whole thing has been remastered and sounds great, but this was never an exercise in sonic perfection: instead, crank it up and enjoy the sound of one of Metal’s greatest ever bands saluting their heroes and kicking out the jams!!

The album opens with "The Ecstasy of Gold," which is appropriate as this has been their standard opener for years. Next up is a rousing rendition of "Creeping Death" which is only marred by a poorly recorded chorus provided by the audience members. Next up is "For Whom the Bell Tolls," which uses audience participation very briefly. The vocal reverb/delay used on the live version of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is what really makes the track stand out, and the guitar solo seems to have a "freak out" moment by Kirk. "Fuel" is next, and oddly what is a pyrotechnic going off in the first few seconds of the song provides an odd addition to the percussion. The performance of the song was energetic except for an odd instrumental stumble at about 45 seconds in, but the band did recovery very quickly. "Ride the Lightning" came up next, and went pretty well with the exception of James sounding like he couldn't remember some of the lyrics for a few seconds. "One" starts out using audio clips of explosions, helicopters and gunfire which goes on for almost 2 minute unaccompanied by any music until the opening riff finally comes in. "The Memory Remains" starts out with some "playful banter" with James and the crowd, but quickly builds to a very energetic performance with the most successful audience participation on the album. "Wherever I May Roam" was a pretty straightforward live performance with the audience singing the line "wherever I may roam" along with James. "Cyanide" is most notable for having a very awesome bass tone audible through most of the track and making me wonder what equipment/settings Robert was using. You can also tell that the band is way more used to playing this newer material, as their playing is tighter than on some previous tracks. "...And Justice for All" was next up. "Master of Puppets" was performed with a great surge of energy by the band and the audience's enthusiasm. "Battery" is another track where the pyrotechnics provide some unexpected percussion. The fourth single by the legendary American Thrash Metal band.
Taken from the eighth studio album "St. Anger", it was released on July 13, 2004 through Elektra Records.
Metallica intended to sell their 2003 comeback album, "St. Anger", with a series of infomercials by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, directors of the acclaimed documentaries "Brother's Keeper" and "Paradise Lost". Bizarre as that failed plan sounds, what's even more bizarre is that those infomercials morphed into the feature-length film "Some Kind of Monster" (its title taken from an album track on "St. Anger"), which documented the making of "St. Anger", including the group therapy sessions that helped the band pull back from the brink of breakup. All movies need a soundtrack, so one was cobbled together to coincide with the release of the movie.
The name “Some Kind Of Monster” came from vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield describing the lyrics to producer Bob Rock being about a Frankenstein creature or "some kind of monster". Bob Rock Performed bass on "Some Kind of Monster".
The live B-sides are all taken from the previous single release "The Unnamed Feeling" EP. All live tracks recorded at Le Bataclan, Paris, June 11th 2003.
"Some Kind Of Monster" was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2005 but lost to Velvet Revolver for the song "Slither".

The fourth re-release of the second live album by legendary American Heavy/Thrash Metal band.
Metallica plays with The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra! It was recorded on April 21–22, 1999 at The Berkeley Community Theatre. This is the final Metallica album to feature Jason Newsted as bassist.
"S&M" contains performances of Metallica songs with additional symphonic accompaniment, which was composed by Michael Kamen, who also conducted the orchestra during the concert. The idea to combine Heavy Metal with an epic classical approach, as James Hetfield has stated repeatedly, was an idea of Cliff Burton. Burton’s love of Classical Music, especially of Johann Sebastian Bach, can be traced back to many instrumental parts and melodic characteristics in Metallica’s songwriting including songs from "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets". The other inspiration was Deep Purple's 1969 "Concerto For Group And Orchestra". Purple revived their hybrid musical performance in 1999's "Live At The Royal Albert Hall" after being notified that Metallica were doing their earlier that year.
In addition to songs from previous albums spanning "Ride The Lightning" through "Reload", there are two new compositions: "No Leaf Clover" and "- Human"!
"S&M" sold 300000 units in the first week of release, and went on to sell a total of 2.5 million copies. As of 2003, the album has been certified 5x Platinum.

After recent DVDs chronicling Metallica shows in Paris and Mexico, here comes another. DVD documenting two shows the band played at the Colisée Pepsi in Quebec, Canada, on October 31 and November 1, 2009, on their World Magnetic Tour.
The result is an uneven blend of songs from 2008’s "Death Magnetic" album and classics from their early and mid-career. By this stage in the game, Metallica can’t play a show without including "Enter Sandman", "Master Of Puppets", "Nothing Else Matters", "Seek And Destroy" and a handful of other expected crowd-pleasers. But they’ve dug a little deeper into the catalogue for “The Shortest Straw” (previously unavailable on film), “Holier Than Thou” (rarely played) and a mesmerizingly powerful blast through "Damage, Inc.", possibly their heaviest song ever. Extras include interviews with the band and the chatter from overexcited fans.
The album sold about 14,000 copies during the first week after its release, charting at number two on the Billboard Top Music Videos chart.

The first DVD with all the original videos by legendary American Thrash Metal band. Metallica has never taken itself lightly. From pure Metal on "Kill ‘Em All" to pure meltdown on "Some Kind Of Monster", a strand of crippling tension has always held the quintet together. And even the music video medium, which the band Thrashed its way into in 1989, hasn’t been spared this heaviness. And "The Videos 1989 - 2004" confirms this, whether through the live energy of “Wherever I May Roam” and “Sad But True”, the helplessness of “One”, or the heartache of Bad Company’s “Turn the Page”.
While there aren’t any true surprises here, and few extras for that matter, this collection succeeds as a document of a band, from breaking through to the mainstream to redefining itself in a new century. And while the music has evolved, the attitude hasn’t affirming Metallica as far more powerful than the Bay Area Thrash Metal band that emerged over 20 years ago!

Metallica's first new material in over five years arrived after a flurry of non-musical activity that included a much-publicized spat over Internet file sharing, the departure of bassist Jason Newsted, and a lengthy stay in rehab for James Hetfield that suspended the recording of a new album indefinitely. "St. Anger" is often recognized for being a radical musical departure from Metallica's earlier work; it features a Heavy Metal style, raw production, and no guitar solos.
It was the band's last album released through Elektra, thus marking the end of the longest timespan between studio albums from Metallica, with nearly six years between the release of "Reload" and this album. The album marks the final collaboration between Metallica and producer Bob Rock, whose relationship began with the band's fifth studio album, 1991's "Metallica". It's also the first Metallica album since "Master Of Puppets" that does not feature long-time bassist Jason Newsted. Newsted left the band prior to the initial sessions for the album, leaving Rock to temporarily take his place until a permanent replacement could be found. It is also the first album since "...And Justice For All" to have a title track. Recording of the album initially started on April 23, 2001, but was postponed indefinitely when rhythm guitarist and singer James Hetfield entered rehab for "alcoholism and other addictions". Hetfield returned to the fold in late 2001. Still without a bass player, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and their newly sober frontman recruited longtime producer Bob Rock to man Newsted's spot, and creation of the album commenced in May 2002.
"St. Anger" arrived a year later as a punishing, unflinching document of internal struggle, taking listeners inside the bruised yet vital body of Metallica, but ultimately revealing the alternately torturous and defiant demons that wrestle inside Hetfield's brain. This album is exactly what Metallica needed to make at this point in its career, after clawing its way to the top of the metal scrap heap, reeducating a generation of bands, and popularizing its genre beyond anyone's expectations. "St. Anger" looks inward with a hard eye, and while it finds some grinning demons in that pit, it unearths some of the sickest grooves of Metallica's 20-plus-year lifespan.
"St. Anger" debuted at the top of sales charts in 30 countries, including the US Billboard 200. Upon its release, it met mixed critical reviews and has since gained less favorable reception. “Master Of Puppets” marks the last Metallica album with bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a bus accident while touring to promote the album.
Even though "Master Of Puppets" didn't take as gigantic a leap forward as "Ride The Lightning", it was the band's greatest achievement, hailed as a masterpiece by critics far outside Heavy Metal's core audience. It was also a substantial hit, reaching the Top 30 and selling three million copies despite absolutely nonexistent airplay.
Instead of a radical reinvention, "Master Of Puppets" is a refinement of past innovations. In fact, it's possible to compare "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets" song for song and note striking similarities between corresponding track positions on each record. Though it isn't as startling as "Ride The Lightning", "Master Of Puppets" feels more unified, both thematically and musically. Everything about it feels blown up to epic proportions, and the band feels more in control of its direction. The arrangements are thick and muscular, and the material varies enough in texture and tempo to hold interest through all its twists and turns.
Some critics have called "Master Of Puppets" the best Heavy Metal album ever recorded; if it isn't, it certainly comes close. The album reached #29 on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart and was the band's first Gold record for sales of over 500,000 copies. This was done without any radio airplay or the release of a music video. The album eventually was certified 6 x Platinum by the RIAA.
The album is considered a classic Thrash Metal album by fans, critics and the band members themselves, and is considered to be one of the most influential Heavy Metal albums of all time!!

Metallica has always enjoyed playing covers, and this collection is a nice salute to their long career and the bands they enjoy listening to. “Garage Inc.” Sadly, this is the best thing that they might have done in the 90s since the “Black Album”.
Overall, Metallica’s “Garage Inc.” is quite an interesting little insight into the influences of Metallica. Also, it is quite interesting, is what they do to modify each song to fit them. “Garage Inc.” is best suited for fans that might not have the budget or time to track down all of these separate releases.

Remastered re-release of the fourth full-length studio album by legendary American Thrash Metal band.
It is the first full-length Metallica album to feature bassist Jason Newsted, following the death of Cliff Burton in 1986 (Newsted had previously participated on the cover album “The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited” EP, which was his first recorded work with Metallica). It's also the last Metallica album with producer Flemming Rasmussen.
Metallica's previous studio album, "Master Of Puppets" (1986), was their last under their contract with the record label Music for Nations. Manager Peter Mensch wanted them to sign with British record distributor Phonogram Records. Phonogram manager Martin Hooker offered them "well over £1 million, which at that time was the biggest deal we'd ever offered anyone". His explanation was that the final figure for combined British and European sales of all three Metallica albums was more than 1.5 million copies.
The album was initially released on one vinyl disc, but soon after re-released as a double-album (without additional tracks).
"...And Justice For All" marked the band's gear-shift from Underground heroes to the major league. Containing the band's first Top 40 Single, the horror-filled "One", the album's hard-hitting lyrics and darkly intense feel delighted their ever-growing fanbase, reaching number six on the Billboard chart.
After years of refusing to release music videos, Metallica released its first for "One". The video was controversial among fans, who had valued the band's apparent opposition to MTV and other forms of mainstream music. Slant Magazine ranked it number 48 on their list of the "100 Greatest Music Videos", saying that Metallica "evoke a revolution of the soul far more devastating than that presented in the original text". The guitar solo was ranked number seven in Guitar World's compilation of the "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" of all time. Additionally, website Noisecreep classed the song ninth among the "10 Best '80s Metal Songs".
The album was acclaimed by music critics for its depth and complexity, although its dry mix and nearly inaudible bass guitar were criticized. It was included in The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics' poll of the year's best albums, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989, controversially losing out to Jethro Tull in the ill-fated Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental category. The Single "One" earned Metallica their first Grammy Award in 1990 (and the first ever in the Best Metal Performance category).
Although Metallica's music was considered unappealing for mainstream radio, "...And Justice For All" was highly successful in the US. It became Metallica's best-selling album upon release, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200, where it charted for 83 weeks. More than 8 000 000 copies have been sold in the United States since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales. It was certified Platinum nine weeks after it was released in stores, and 1.7 million copies were sold in the US by the end of 1988. Since its release, the album has scanned more than 8 million copies in the US. It was certified 8× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2003 for shipping eight million copies in the U.S. With this album, Metallica received substantial media exposure, becoming a multi-Platinum act by 1990.
"...And Justice For All" achieved similar chart success outside the United States. It topped the charts in Finland, peaked within the top 5 on the charts in Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, and remained on the UK chart for six weeks. The album managed to peak in the top 10 on the Norwegian and Swiss album charts. "...And Justice For All" received a three times Platinum certification from Music Canada for shipping 300 000 copies, a Platinum certification from IFPI Finland for having a shipment of little over 50 000 copies, and was certified Gold by the Bundesverband Musikindustrie (BVMI) for shipments of 250 000 copies. It was awarded Gold by the British Phonographic Industry in 2013 for shipping 100 000 copies in the UK. "...And Justice For All" was surpassed commercially by the band's following album, "Metallica" (1991).
The album was ranked at number nine on IGN's "Top 25 Metal Albums". Guitar World lists it 12th on the "100 Greatest Guitar Albums" from a 2006 reader poll, and lists all of its tracks on "The 100 Greatest Metallica Songs of All Time". Kerrang! listed the album at number 42 among the "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time". Martin Popoff ranks it at number 19 in his book The Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time, the fourth highest ranked Metallica album on the list. It is featured in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In 2017, it was ranked 21st on Rolling Stone's list of "100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time".

“Death Magnetic” features very long, technical guitar solos from both Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield, marking a return to the band's Thrash Metal roots. “Death Magnetic” also the band's first album released through Warner Bros. Outside of North America, they are distributed through Universal Music Group as they remain signed to Vertigo Records in the United Kingdom. The second collaborative live album of Metallica & San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
A follow-up to "S&M", it is live collaborative album released in 1999. The album was recorded during a live performance in San Francisco at the Chase Center in 2019. The performance was also filmed and released theatrically on October 9, 2019.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of "S&M", the 1999 extravaganza where Metallica played highlights from their catalogue with the support of the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Kamen, the band decided to celebrate by holding two new concerts with the orchestra. Appropriately called "S&M2", the 2019 event was a very different affair. "S&M2" inaugurated San Francisco's new arena The Chase Center, whereas the original "S&M" was held at the relatively smaller-scale Berkeley Community Theatre, and then there's a question of personnel.
Metallica parted ways with bassist Jason Newsted after "S&M", hiring Robert Trujillo as his replacement in 2003, the same year that Kamen died. This, along with the passing years, means that the band feels slightly different on "S&M2" than they did in 1999, a shift that can also be partially ascribed to their new collaborators of Michael Tilson Thomas and Edwin Outwater, who respectively are the music director for the San Francisco Symphony and its conductor for this show.
"S&M2" debuted at No. 4 on Billboard with 56000 equivalent album units, with 53000 units of that coming from album sales.

Metallica’s eponymous album, better known as "The Black Album".
Released on August 13, 1991, “Metallica” was a departure from the Thrash Metal style of Metallica's previous four albums and saw the band moving towards a more commercial Heavy Metal sound. Many fans consider the album the initial turning point in their music, where "old" and "new" Metallica are distinguished from one another.
"The Black Album" is one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed records of all time, with global sales of over 35 million, and contains a series of unrelenting singles, "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters", "Wherever I May Roam", and "Sad But True". It debuted at number one in ten countries and spent four consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard 200, making it Metallica's first album to top the album charts. "Metallica" is the band's best-selling album to date, with over 16 million copies sold in the United States. It is one of the best-selling albums worldwide, and also one of the best-selling albums in the United States since Nielsen SoundScan tracking began. Up to 2012, the album was certified 16× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2020, the album was ranked number 235 on Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. In December 2019, "Metallica" became the fourth release in American history to enter the 550-week milestone on the Billboard 200. It also became the second longest-charting traditional title in history, and the second to spend 550 weeks on the album charts.

Like "Death Magnetic", Metallica’s latest, "Hardwired… To Self-Destruct", is an attempt to revisit their early days. The only difference is that this time they sound like they’re actually trying, and maybe even having a bit of fun. It is band's first studio album in eight years following, marking the longest gap between two studio albums in the band's career. It is also their first studio album not to feature songwriting credits from lead guitarist Kirk Hammett since he joined the band in 1983. Allegedly, this is due to the guitarist losing an iPhone filled with riffs just prior to recording -- and he's also diminished in terms of solos, leaving an album as a showcase for Metallica's musical constructions. Moreover, its band’s first studio album released through their own label, Blackened.
Sprawling over two discs when it could have fit onto one (an aesthetic choice certainly meant to evoke memories of 1988's double LP "...And Justice for All"), "Hardwired...To Self-Destruct" does indeed rage, roaring out the gate with a title track where James Hetfield bellows "We're so f**ked/S**k out of luck". That palpable desperation recalls the free-floating angst that fueled Metallica's '80s, but "Hardwired...To Self-Destruct" doesn't find the quartet scrambling to sound as ferocious as they did during their heyday. Often, they do unleash the fury - "Moth into Flame" gallops forward in a manner reminiscent of "Battery" - but there's no denying that Metallica are an older band now, either incapable or uninterested in maintaining that intensity over the course of a full double album. When they slow down, it's not exclusively to churn and brood. "Murder One", a salute to departed Motörhead leader Lemmy, may belong in that category, but "Am I Savage?" teeters between ominous dirge and intricate transitions, while "Dream No More" has a backbeat that nearly swings. "ManUNKind" also has a bit of buried Funk in its rhythms and that, along with the preponderance of complicated suites, is a clue that "Hardwired...To Self-Destruct" is primarily the work of Hetfield and Lars Ulrich…
Make no mistake - "Hardwired..." is easily Metallica’s best album since 1991’s landmark self-titled LP. Still, the band couldn't return at a better time...
The album was Metallica's sixth consecutive studio album to debut at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 291 000 album-equivalent units in its first week, of which 282,000 were pure album sales. The remaining 9 000 units comprised 34 000 song purchases and 9.3 million streams. It was the third-largest debut of the year in the US on pure sales. The album slipped to number 3 on the Billboard 200 in its second week, selling 75,000 units, including 71 000 copies. "Hardwired... To Self-Destruct" was the best selling Heavy Metal album of 2016 in the US and seventh overall, with 516 000 copies sold by the end of December. It became the highest selling debut of the year in Germany with more than 200 000 copies shipped in its first week, earning a Platinum Certification. "Hardwired... To Self-Destruct" had the biggest opening week of 2016 in Australia with 26 000 copies sold, debuting at number one on the ARIA chart.
