The title refers to the thirteen tracks included, which feature a variety of songs from their five studio albums released 1967 through 1970. It includes all six songs by the band that had reached the American Top 40 to this point, although not necessarily in their Single release version.
It is the band's only compilation album released while lead singer Jim Morrison was alive. The album reached No. 25 on the Billboard 200.

The last album to feature the band's lead singer, Jim Morrison, who died three months after the album's release. It was also recorded without record producer Paul A. Rothchild after he fell out with the group over the perceived lack of quality of their studio performances. Subsequently, the band co-produced the album with long-time sound engineer Bruce Botnick.
The album saw the band continue to integrate elements of Blues back into their music, a direction begun with their previous album, "Morrison Hotel". Actually, some of the straight Blues items sound kind of turgid, but that's more than made up for by several cuts that rate among their finest and most disturbing work. The seven-minute title track was a car-cruising classic that celebrated both the glamour and seediness of Los Angeles; the other long cut, the brooding, Jazzy "Riders on the Storm", was the band's at its most melodic and ominous. It and the far bouncier "Love Her Madly" were hit singles, and "The Changeling" and "L'America" count as some of their better, little-heeded album tracks. An uneven but worthy finale from the original quartet… Three months after release, on July 3, Morrison was found dead. 
"Love Her Madly" was released as a single in March 1971, preceding the album's release, and it reached the Top 20 in the Billboard Hot 100 for a stay of 11 weeks, but failed to chart in the UK. Upon release, the album peaked at number nine on the Billboard 200, remaining on the charts for 36 weeks, and reached number 28 in the UK, spending four weeks on the UK Albums Charts. An additional Single in support of the album, "Riders On The Storm", also achieved chart success on Billboard and in the UK.

For that reason, the band's second effort isn't as consistently stunning as their debut, though overall it's a very successful continuation of the themes of their classic album. Besides the hit "Strange Days", highlights included the funky "Moonlight Drive", the eerie "You're Lost Little Girl", and the jerkily rhythmic "Love Me Two Times", which gave the band a small chart single. "My Eyes Have Seen You" and "I Can't See Your Face in My Mind" are minor but pleasing entries in the band's repertoire that share a subdued Eastern Psychedelic air. The 11-minute "When the Music's Over" would often be featured as a live showstopper, yet it also illustrated their tendency to occasionally slip into drawn-out bombast.
The album was a commercial success, reaching number 3 on the US Billboard 200 during a sixty-three-week chart stay in November 1967, and eventually earning RIAA Platinum certification. The album was the first commercial breakthrough for the band in the UK, reaching number 16 on the UK Albums Chart. After the release of "Waiting For The Sun", The Doors commanded substantial performance fees and played before large crowds in arenas such as the L.A. Forum, the Hollywood Bowl, and Madison Square Garden.
Most of the next album was recorded following a gruelling tour, during which the band was left with little time to compose new material. Record producer Paul A. Rothchild recommended a total departure from the Doors' first three albums: develop a fuller sound by incorporating brass and string arrangements provided by Paul Harris. Lead singer Jim Morrison, who was dealing with personal issues and focusing more on his poetry, was less involved in the songwriting process, allowing guitarist Robby Krieger to increase his own creative output. Upon release, "The Soft Parade" was denounced by both music critics and the band's Underground music scene followers, who viewed the album as The Doors' trending into Pop music. Over time, historians have reassessed the album and its critical standing has slightly improved, but it is still widely considered to be the group's weakest effort with Morrison.
Three preceding Singles, "Touch Me", "Wishful Sinful", and "Tell All the People", were included on "The Soft Parade", with the former becoming another Top 10 hit for The Doors. Another single, "Runnin' Blue", also followed the album's release.

"Waiting For The Sun" became the band's only #1 album (topping the charts for four weeks) and included their second US #1 single, "Hello, I Love You" (for two weeks starting August 3, 1968). The first single released off the album was "The Unknown Soldier," which peaked at #39 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also became the band's first hit album in the UK, where it peaked at #16.
The song "Waiting for the Sun" was also recorded during the sessions for the album but was left off and later appeared on the album "Morrison Hotel" in 1970.
