The downside to a success like "Thriller" is that it's nearly impossible to follow, but Michael Jackson approached "Bad" much the same way he approached "Thriller" - take the basic formula of the predecessor, expand it slightly, and move it outward. This meant that he moved deeper into Hard Rock, deeper into schmaltzy adult contemporary, deeper into hard dance - essentially taking each portion of "Thriller" to an extreme, while increasing the quotient of immaculate studiocraft.
Released nearly five years after it's predecessor, "Thriller" (1982), "Bad" saw Jackson exercise even more artistic freedom than he did with his two previous releases ("Off The Wall" and "Thriller"). Jackson composed nine of the album's eleven tracks, and received co-producer credit for the entire album. The album marked the final collaboration between Jackson and producer Quincy Jones.
Nine of the eleven songs (ten on vinyl version) on "Bad" were released as singles; one was a promotional single, and another was released outside of the United States and Canada. The only songs on the album, which were not released as commercial singles, were "Speed Demon" and "Just Good Friends".
With seven hit singles out of eleven tracks, "Bad" could easily be thought of as a greatest hits album. Songs such as "Bad" and "Dirty Diana" show a harder, more Rocking approach to the music. Jackson's universal appeal, along with his hiccup vocals and huge Pop sound, is still very much in focus.
The album continued Jackson's commercial success in the late 1980s, and garnered six Grammy Award nominations, winning two. Apart from commercial success, the album was well received by contemporary critics. Five of the singles hit No. 1 in the United States, while a sixth charted within the top ten, and a seventh charted within the top twenty on the Hot 100. "Bad" peaked at No. 1 in thirteen countries and charted within the top twenty in other territories. It was ranked No. 43 in the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time of the MTV Generation in 2009 by VH1, and number 202 in Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. "Bad" has sold an estimated 35 million copies worldwide, making it the eleventh best-selling album of all time. In 2017, the album was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America, denoting sales of over ten million copies in the United States.

The tenth full-length studio album by legendary American Funk/Soul/Pop singer.
First posthumous album with previously unreleased tracks. It is the first release of all-new Jackson material since "Invincible" in 2001 and the seventh since Jackson's death on June 25, 2009.
The majority of the songs on the album are songs that were written and recorded during the "Invincible" era and onwards. The album contains two songs that were written during the "Thriller era", "Behind the Mask" and "Much Too Soon". The song "(I Like) The Way You Love Me" previously appeared on "The Ultimate Collection" (2004) with the title "The Way You Love Me" as an unreleased track. For "Michael", the song has been re-arranged and more vocals have been added. The song "Best of Joy" is one of the last that Michael recorded during his lifetime, having written and recorded it in 2009, the year of his death.
Prior to the album's release, a lawyer for Jackson's father Joe stated that Jackson was a perfectionist and "would never have wanted his unfinished material to be released". Jackson collaborator will.i.am said it was "disrespectful" to release the material, as Jackson was not able to approve it. The album drew controversy over the authenticity of some vocals. The authenticity of the vocals on the tracks "Breaking News", "Keep Your Head Up", and "Monster" is still in doubt.
"Michael" debuted at number one in Germany, selling 85 000 copies in its first week. The album also debuted at number one in Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden. In the US, it debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 228 000 copies, followed by 150 000 the next week. In Denmark, the album debuted at number four, selling 4 936 copies in its first week. On December 19, 2010, the album opened in the UK at number four with sales of 113 000, which was Michael Jackson's biggest opening sales week in the UK since the release of "Dangerous" nearly 20 years before. In its first five weeks, the album sold over 434 000 copies in the United States. In the same week, the album was certified Platinum by the RIAA for shipping over a million copies. This was a visionary album, a record that found a way to break Disco wide open into a new world where the Beat was undeniable, but not the primary focus - it was part of a colourful tapestry of lush Broadway ballads and strings, smooth Soul and Pop, R&B, Soft Rock, and alluring Funk. Its roots hearken back to the Jacksons' huge mid '70s hit "Dancing Machine", but this is an enormously fresh record, one that remains vibrant and giddily exciting years after its release. This all would have made it a success (and its success, in turn, served as a new standard for success), but it stayed on the charts, turning out singles, for nearly two years because it was really, really good!
By the following Christmas, "Thriller" had become the phenomenon it remains to this day. Singles kept dropping off the album like golden fruit from a platinum bough: the precision snap of that snare on UK number one "Billie Jean"; the raucous Eddie Van Halen guitar on "Beat It"; the groove-driven frenzy of "Wanna Be Startin' Something". It became apparent that this was a remarkable, ever-yielding Pop jukebox.
By 1984, the album got an extension on its lifecycle with the John Landis-directed video for "Thriller", which took the album from successful Pop record to cultural icon. Casting the then-clean cut, scandal-free singer as a werewolf in a 15-rated short film was a risk, but one that truly paid off! Soon enough "Thriller" had become a greatest hits package – seven of its nine tracks were issued as singles.
Love it or hate it, "Thriller" is Pop's great, immovable Everest. Marketing departments realised that more and more singles could be pulled from a record to prolong its shelf life, and Michael Jackson became the King of Pop with the whole of the recording industry at his investiture!!
