The ninth full-length studio album by legendary American Pop singer.
The album, produced by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï, features references to many parts of American culture. It is a concept album, with themes of the American Dream and materialism. These themes reject the reputation Madonna held in the 1980s, earned by songs such as her worldwide hit "Material Girl" (1985).
The album contains Folk and Folktronica music, as well as influences of acoustic music.
"American Life" initially received mixed reviews; critics found the record confusing and "about Madonna". Retrospective reviews have been much warmer, with critics noting the album's consistency as well as acknowledging Madonna taking a risk musically.
After its release, "American Life" debuted at number one on the United States Billboard 200 chart with 241,000 copies sold in its first week. The sales were less than Madonna's previous studio album, "Music", which debuted with 420,000 copies in 2000, but was the only one that week to sell over 200,000 copies. It was Madonna's second consecutive number one debut, and her fifth number one album overall in the US.
In Canada, the album debuted at the top of the Canadian Albums Chart with sales of 18,000 copies on May 10, 2003. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the sum was considerably less than her previous studio efforts, "Ray Of Light" (1998) and "Music" (2000), which debuted with 59,000 and 50,000 copies respectively.
In the United Kingdom, "American Life" debuted atop the UK Albums Chart, with sales of 65,013 copies, much less than the opening sum of 2000's "Music", which debuted with sales of 151,891 copies. It was present for a total of 19 weeks on the chart, ranking at number 52 on the UK year-end tally.
The album peaked at number one in fourteen countries. In European countries, the album topped the charts in Austria, Belgium (Flanders), Belgium (Wallonia), Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and British Phonographic Industry (BPI) both certified it Platinum in recognition of 1,000,000 shipments in the United States, and 300,000 shipments in the United Kingdom, respectively. It gained a Platinum certification one month later from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA), for shipment of 100,000 copies of the album. In Japan, the album peaked at number four on the Oricon Weekly Albums chart remaining there for 13 weeks, and went on to gain a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) that same year, for shipping 100,000 copies of the release. In Australia the album peaked at number three, before descending rapidly down the ARIA Albums Chart. Nevertheless, it gained a Platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) for shipping 70,000 copies. The album also gained Platinum certifications in countries such as France, Russia, and Switzerland, and Gold certifications in Brazil, Greece, and the Netherlands.
Overall, "American Life" became the 32nd best-selling album of 2003, with 5,000,000 copies sold worldwide. "American Life" garnered two nominations at the 46th Grammy Awards in 2004. However, it became the third lowest selling studio album by Madonna behind her 2012 release "MDNA" and her 2015 release "Rebel Heart", with sales of 680,000 copies as of October 2012, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
This double LP issued in a matte gatefold sleeve with generic die-cut inner sleeves with rounded corners. Although correctly spelled on the label, "Nothing Fails" is misspelled as "Nothing Falls" on the sleeve.

"Something To Remember" compiling a selection of the singer's ballads, spanning over a decade of her career, including a remixed version of "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" and three new songs: "You'll See", "One More Chance" and a cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You", recorded with the British Trip-Hop band Massive Attack. "True Blue" is the album where Madonna truly became superstar - the endlessly ambitious, fearlessly provocative entertainer who knew how to outrage, spark debates, get good reviews, and make good music while she's at it.

Following the success of her previous album "Ray Of Light" (1998), Madonna intended to embark on a tour. However, her record company encouraged her to return to the studio and record new music before going on the road. Her collaboration with producers Mirwais Ahmadzaï and William Orbit resulted a more experimental direction for the album. "Music" has an overall Dance-Pop and Electronica vibe, with influences from Rock, Country and Folk. Elaborating a Country theme for the album, Madonna reinvented her image as a cowgirl.
Filled with vocoders, stylish Neo-Electro beats, dalliances with Trip-Hop, and, occasionally, eerie synthesized atmospherics, "Music" blows by in a kaleidoscopic rush of color, technique, style, and substance. It has so many layers that it's easily as self-aware and earnest as "Ray Of Light", where Madonna's studiousness complemented a record heavy on spirituality and reflection. Here, she mines that territory occasionally, especially as the record winds toward its conclusion, but she applies her new tricks toward celebrations of music itself. That's not only true of the full-throttle dance numbers but also for ballads like "I Deserve It" and "Nobody's Perfect", where the sentiments are couched in Electronic effects and lolling, rolling beats. Ultimately, that results in the least introspective or revealing record Madonna has made since "Like A Prayer", yet that doesn't mean she doesn't invest herself in the record. Working with a stable of producers, she has created an album that is her most explicitly musical and restlessly creative since, "Like A Prayer". Whenever she works with Mirwais, Music truly comes alive with the spark and style.
The album was supported by the Drowned World Tour, which grossed over $75.000.000, making it the highest-grossing tour by a solo act of 2001 (the fourth overall).
Three singles were released from the album. Its lead single, "Music", topped the record charts in 25 countries worldwide and became Madonna's 12th number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It was followed with another Hot 100 top-five hit "Don't Tell Me" and "What It Feels Like for a Girl" which attained the top-ten position in several countries worldwide. "MDNA" was Madonna's first release under the 360 deal she had signed with Live Nation in 2007 and the three-album deal with Interscope in 2012. 
A Pop and Electronic Dance Music (EDM) record, "MDNA" consists of upbeat songs which lyrically explore themes of partying, love for music, infatuation, as well as heartbreak, revenge and separation. The album's title is a triple entendre and its allusion to "MDMA" drew negative reception from anti-drug groups.
Music critics were ambivalent towards the album. They praised Orbit's production and the ballads, but criticized the lyrics as well as Madonna for being regressive with her music. "MDNA" topped the record charts in most musical markets. Madonna set a new record for the most number-one albums by a solo artist in Australia and the United Kingdom. Thematically, "Rebel Heart" represents the singer's romantic and rebellious sides; the ideas grew organically during the writing and recording sessions. Originally released on November 9, 1990, it contains new remixes of fifteen of her hit Singles from 1983 to 1990, as well as two new songs. Its title is a loose pun on the Immaculate Conception, the conception of the Virgin Mary without the stain of original sin.
An EP titled "The Holiday Collection" was released in Europe to accompany the compilation and the re-release of "Holiday", which included three hits not included on the main compilation.
"Justify My Love", the album's lead single, became Madonna's ninth number-one Single on the Billboard Hot 100. Its music video included sexual themes and was banned by MTV, becoming one of Madonna's most controversial Singles. "Rescue Me" was released as the second Single and became the highest-debuting single on the Hot 100 by a female artist at that time, entering the chart at number 15 and eventually peaking at number nine. "Holiday" was reissued in Europe as the album's third Single and peaked at nine on the UK Singles Chart.
On November 24, 1990, "The Immaculate Collection" debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, remaining there for nine weeks, becoming the biggest selling UK album in 1990, also breaking the record for the longest consecutive weeks at number one by a solo female artist, a record that would not be matched until 2011 by Adele's album "21".
In the United States, "The Immaculate Collection" reached number two on the Billboard 200, while topping the album charts in the United Kingdom. It became Madonna's second album to be certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments of over 10,000,000 copies in the United States. Additionally, the album topped the charts in Australia, Canada and Finland, and the top-five in France, the Netherlands and Spain. The compilation was certified 12× Platinum by Australian Recording Industry Association, becoming one of the best-selling albums in Australia. In the United Kingdom, "The Immaculate Collection" was certified 12× Platinum by British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for shipment of 3.6 million copies. In France, the album was certified Diamond for shipment of one million copies of the album. In August 2018, the album was confirmed by the Official Charts Company to have sold 3.77 million copies, making it the biggest-selling album by a solo female artist in British history, the fourth biggest-selling the greatest hits album in the UK by any artist, and the 12th biggest-selling album of all time in the UK. Additionally, during its performance in 1990 the album sold 330,000 in a week, becoming in the second highest weekly total on record according to Official Charts Company. According to the Official Chart Company, "The Immaculate Collection" is one of the Top 50 Ireland's biggest female artist albums of all-time.
The album has sold 30,000,000 copies worldwide, making it the best-selling compilation album by a solo artist and one of the best-selling albums of all time.
"The Immaculate Collection" is the first album ever to use the audio technology QSound. It would be later superseded by Madonna's third greatest hits album "Celebration" (2009), which includes every song from the album, except "Rescue Me".

After having established herself as a singer in downtown New York City, Madonna was signed by Sire Records' president Seymour Stein, due to the club success of her debut Single, "Everybody" (1982). On this album, Madonna collaborated with Dallas Austin, Babyface, Dave "Jam" Hall, and Nellee Hooper, deciding to move into a more R&B direction. Madonna used this direction in a bid to soften her image following the critical and commercial backlash she faced after releasing several sexually explicit projects in the previous two years, notably the "Erotica" album and the "Sex" book. The huge success of the soundtrack single "I'll Remember" earlier that year marked the beginning of this transformation, and Madonna used "Bedtime Stories" to continue it.
A Pop, R&B and Hip Hop album, "Bedtime Stories" explores lyrical themes of love, sorrow and romance, but with a toned-down, less sexual approach. Critics described the album as "autobiographical", as the song "Human Nature" addresses the controversy surrounding her previous projects. Madonna also worked with Icelandic singer Björk on the track "Bedtime Story", as she wanted to explore the British club musical scene, where genres such as Dub had been growing in popularity.

Madonna started working on the album in early 2007, and collaborated with Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, the Neptunes and Nate "Danja" Hills. The Pet Shop Boys were also asked to collaborate with Madonna on the album by Warner Bros., but the record company later changed their mind and withdrew their invitation.
After its release, "Hard Candy" debuted at number one in 37 countries worldwide, including the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdom and became the eleventh best-selling album worldwide of 2008, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. The album has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, "Hard Candy" sold 100,000 copies in the United States upon its first day of release. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with over 280,000 copies sold. "Hard Candy" became Madonna's seventh number-one album, making her the female artist with the second most Billboard number one albums, behind only Barbra Streisand.
The album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on June 4, 2008, for shipments of 500,000 copies in the United States. As of December 2016, "Hard Candy" has sold 751,000 copies.
In Canada, the album debuted at the top of the Canadian Albums Chart and was certified Platinum by the Music Canada (MC) for shipments of 80,000 copies. As of January 2009, the album sold 169,000 units in Canada according to Nielsen Company.

A fourth song, "Broken", was recorded for the album but not used; eventually it was released in 2012 as a limited edition promotional vinyl Single for fan club members.
Celebration received universal acclaim by contemporary critics, who noted the vastness of Madonna's back-catalogue. The album debuted at the top of the charts in Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Madonna became tied with Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most number-one albums in the United Kingdom. In the United States, it debuted at number seven in the Billboard 200; in other nations, it also debuted within the top ten, peaking in the top three in most of them. The title track was released as the first Single of the album. It became Madonna's 40th number-one song on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Songs chart. "Revolver" was released as the second Single from the album in some territories, but did not achieve significant commercial success. Worldwide, "Celebration" has sold about four million copies.
In the United States, "Celebration" debuted at number seven, with 72,000 copies sold in its first week. It was present on the chart for a total of 12 weeks and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on November 23, 2009, indicating shipment of 500,000 units. In April 2010, the album got a boost in sales from the Glee episode titled "The Power of Madonna". The album re-entered the Billboard 200 at position 85 with sales of 6,000 and a 219% gain. In February 2012, after her appearance on the Super Bowl XLVI half-time show, the album again entered the Billboard 200 at number 24 with sales of 16,000 copies and a 1,341% gain from previous week.
In Canada, the album debuted at the top of the Canadian Albums Chart, with sales of 17,000 copies.
In Australia and New Zealand, "Celebration" debuted at numbers eight and two on the official charts, respectively. It was certified Gold in both, Australia and New Zealand, by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ), indicating shipments of 35,000 and 7,500 copies respectively.
The album also debuted at number one position on the Gfk Chart-Track albums chart in Ireland, earning a Platinum certification from the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) for shipment of 15,000 copies of the album.
In Japan, "Celebration" reached a peak of number three on the Oricon albums chart and was placed at number 47 on the Oricon year-end rankings, selling 177,194 copies, and earning a Gold certification.
In the United Kingdom, "Celebration" debuted at number one, selling 77,000 copies in the first week. It became Madonna's eleventh number-one release on the UK Albums Chart, tying her with Elvis Presley as the solo act with the most number-one albums in the British chart history. From 2009 to 2012, the album had three separate chart runs within the top 100 of the albums chart. It re-entered the chart again on March 1, 2015, at number 38 with sales of 2,476 copies, following the release of her single "Living for Love" from 13th studio album, "Rebel Heart". The album was certified double Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for shipment of 600,000 copies across the United Kingdom, and it sold 666,000 as of 2019 according to Official Charts Company.
The album reached the top of the charts in Belgium (Flanders), Denmark, Germany and Italy, while in Austria, Belgium (Wallonia), Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland the album debuted within the top ten of the official charts.
In France, "Celebration" debuted with 21,484 units, and it later received a Platinum certification from Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique (SNEP) for shipment of 100,000 copies.
It also debuted at number one on Billboard's European Top 100 Albums chart, topping the chart for four consecutive weeks.
"Celebration" was certified double Platinum by Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana (FIMI) for shipments of 120,000 copies.
In total, Celebration sold over a million copies across Europe, earning a Platinum certification from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

The eighth full-length studio album by legendary American Pop singer.
Following the success of her previous album "Ray Of Light" (1998), Madonna intended to embark on a tour. However, her record company encouraged her to return to the studio and record new music before going on the road. Her collaboration with producers Mirwais Ahmadzaï and William Orbit resulted a more experimental direction for the album. "Music" has an overall Dance-Pop and Electronica vibe, with influences from Rock, Country and Folk. Elaborating a Country theme for the album, Madonna reinvented her image as a cowgirl.
Filled with vocoders, stylish Neo-Electro beats, dalliances with Trip-Hop, and, occasionally, eerie synthesized atmospherics, "Music" blows by in a kaleidoscopic rush of color, technique, style, and substance. It has so many layers that it's easily as self-aware and earnest as "Ray Of Light", where Madonna's studiousness complemented a record heavy on spirituality and reflection. Here, she mines that territory occasionally, especially as the record winds toward its conclusion, but she applies her new tricks toward celebrations of music itself. That's not only true of the full-throttle dance numbers but also for ballads like "I Deserve It" and "Nobody's Perfect", where the sentiments are couched in Electronic effects and lolling, rolling beats. Ultimately, that results in the least introspective or revealing record Madonna has made since "Like A Prayer", yet that doesn't mean she doesn't invest herself in the record. Working with a stable of producers, she has created an album that is her most explicitly musical and restlessly creative since, "Like A Prayer". Whenever she works with Mirwais, Music truly comes alive with the spark and style.
The album was supported by the Drowned World Tour, which grossed over $75.000.000, making it the highest-grossing tour by a solo act of 2001 (the fourth overall).
Three singles were released from the album. Its lead single, "Music", topped the record charts in 25 countries worldwide and became Madonna's 12th number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It was followed with another Hot 100 top-five hit "Don't Tell Me" and "What It Feels Like for a Girl" which attained the top-ten position in several countries worldwide. "Impressive Instant" was released as promotional single, peaking at number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart.
"Music" was generally acclaimed by most critics and earned Madonna five Grammy Award nominations, ultimately winning one for Best Recording Package. "Music" debuted at number-one in 23 countries. It was also a commercial success. The album set a record in Warner Music Group as the biggest album shipment in the company, with three million copies worldwide in the first week. 
In the United States, "Music" debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 420.000 units, making it Madonna's first album to top the chart in more than a decade since "Like A Prayer" (1989). In Canada, the album debuted at the top of the Canadian RPM Albums Chart and was certified Platinum by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) for shipments of 300.000 copies. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked it number 452 on the magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. On November 21, 2005, the album was certified three times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for 3.000.000 units shipped in the United States. As of August 2010, "Music" has sold 2.925.000 copies there according to Nielsen SoundScan and has sold over 11.000.000 copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling albums during the 2000s century.
