The album marked a musical departure from their signature sound. After the lackluster performance of "Adrenalize", Def Leppard realized it was time to abandon their trademark wall-of-guitars sound. Jettisoning producer Mutt Lange - who, admittedly, was busy producing his wife, country singer Shania Twain - the group stripped its sound to the basics for "Slang". There are very few layers-of-guitar effects on the album, just straight, crunching chords. Most notably, Rick Allen has returned to playing acoustic drums after playing an electronic kit for nearly a decade. The change in approach is apparent and welcome - Def Leppard hasn't sounded so immediate since "Pyromania". Furthermore, they decided to expand their musical vocabulary slightly, working elements of R&B and Funk into the rhythms. Not all of the experiments work, but Def Leppard sound revitalized, particularly when they attack a straightforward rocker. "Slang" would have been even better if they had come up with a set of hooks that sounded as alive as their performance, but the album is a much-needed return to form for the band.
"Slang" is the first album with new material to feature new guitarist Vivian Campbell (Campbell had previously played on B-side collection "Retro Active" in 1993 and on the new song on "Vault" compialtion a year earlier). It charted at #14 on The Billboard 200[6] and #5 on the UK Albums Chart. It is also the only Def Leppard album that does not feature their recognisable logo on the album cover.

"On Through The Night" established the band as one of the leading lights of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. While possessing the tight, controlled attack of comrades Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, Def Leppard was uninterested in the fantastic, menacing, and sometimes gothic themes of those bands; instead, "On Through the Night" is a collection of working-class Hard Rock anthems informed by the big, glittering hooks of Glam Rock. It may lack the detailed production and more Pop-oriented songwriting of later efforts, but it's also arguably their heaviest album, and some Leppard fans prefer this sound!
The album features re-recorded versions of "Rocks Off" and "Overture", tracks from the band's original independently released EP, "The Def Leppard E.P.". Other tracks are rerecorded versions of early demos, some of which appeared on the "First Strike" and "Warchild" bootlegs. "Rocks Off", "Wasted", "Rock Brigade" (b/w "When the Walls Came Tumbling Down") and "Hello America" were released as singles. However, the versions of "Rocks Off" and "Wasted" that appears on the singles is a different recording from that of the LP, as is its B-side, "Hello America".
It charted at #51 on the Billboard 200 and #15 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA on 9 May 1989.

While Def Leppard had obviously wanted to write big-sounding anthems on their previous records, "Pyromania" was where the band's vision coalesced and gelled into something more. More than ever before, the band's songs on "Pyromania" are driven by catchy, shiny melodic hooks instead of heavy guitar riffs, although the latter do Pop up once in a while.
But it wasn't just this newly intensified focus on melody and consistent songwriting (and heavy MTV exposure) that made "Pyromania" a massive success - and the catalyst for the '80s Pop-Metal movement. Robert John "Mutt" Lange's buffed-to-a-sheen production - polished drum and guitar sounds, multi-tracked layers of vocal harmonies, a general sanding of any and all musical rough edges, and a perfectionistic attention to detail - set the style for much of the melodic Hard Rock that followed.
It wasn't a raw or spontaneous sound, but the performances were still energetic and committed. Leppard's quest for huge, transcendent Hard Rock perfection on "Pyromania" was surprisingly successful; their reach never exceeded their grasp, which makes the album an enduring (and massively influential) classic!
Song "Rock! Rock! ('Till You Drop)" was performed as early as 1980, originally as a song called "Medicine Man", with different lyrics.

While still opting for a controlled musical attack and melodies as big-sounding and stadium-ready as possible, the band opens up its arrangements a bit more on "High 'n' Dry", letting the songs breathe and groove, while the rhythm section and guitar riffs play off one another. MTV helped break the album in the U.S. with its heavy rotation of the video for the unabashedly dramatic Rock ballad "Bringin' on the Heartbreak".
It was the last Pete Willis' full-time album with Def Leppard.

The fourth full-length studio album by legendary British Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band.
Def Leppard's best-selling album to date, selling over 20 000 000 copies worldwide, including 12 million in the US, and spawning seven hit Singles. The album is the follow-up to the band's 1983 breakthrough "Pyromania". "Hysteria"'s creation took over three years and was plagued by delays, including the aftermath of drummer Rick Allen's accident that cost him his left arm on 31 December 1984. In the liner notes to the album, the band apologized for the long wait between albums, and promised to never force fans to wait that long between albums again. However, later events, particularly the death of lead guitarist Steve Clark, delayed the next album, "Adrenalize", by almost five years.
"Hysteria" was produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange. The title of the album was thought up by drummer Rick Allen, referring to his 1984 car accident, the amputation of his arm, and the ensuing worldwide media coverage surrounding it. It is the last album to feature guitarist Steve Clark before his death in 1991, although songs co-written by him would appear on the band's next album, "Adrenalize". Lasting 62 minutes and 32 seconds, the album is the band's longest to date. David Simone, managing director of Phonogram Records at the time, said the album might have been the most expensive record made in the U.K. According to guitarist Phil Collen, the album had to sell a minimum of 5 million copies to break even.
Where "Pyromania" had set the standard for polished, catchy Pop-Metal, "Hysteria" only upped the ante. "Pyromania"'s slick, layered Mutt Lange production turned into a painstaking obsession with dense sonic detail on "Hysteria", with the result that some critics dismissed the record as a stiff, mechanized Pop sell-out (perhaps due in part to Rick Allen's new, partially electronic drum kit). But Def Leppard's music had always employed big, anthemic hooks, and few of the Pop-Metal bands who had hit the charts in the wake of "Pyromania" could compete with Leppard's sense of craft; certainly none had the Pop songwriting savvy to produce seven chart Singles from the same album, as the stunningly consistent "Hysteria" did.
Joe Elliott's lyrics owe an obvious debt to his obsession with T. Rex, particularly on the playfully silly anthem "Pour Some Sugar on Me", and the British Glam Rock tribute "Rocket", while power ballads like "Love Bites" and the title track lack the histrionics or gooey sentimentality of many similar offerings.
The strong Pop hooks and "perfect"-sounding production of "Hysteria" may not appeal to die-hard Heavy Metal fans, but it isn't Heavy Metal - it's Pop-Metal, and arguably the best Pop-Metal ever recorded. Its blockbuster success helped pave the way for a whole new second wave of Hair Metal bands, while proving that the late-'80s musical climate could also be very friendly to veteran Hard Rock acts, a lead many would follow in the next few years.
The album charted at number one on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart. It went on to dominate album charts around the world for three years. It was certified 12× Platinum by the RIAA in 1998. The album currently sits as the 51st Best-selling Album of All Time in the US. It spent 96 weeks in the US top 40, a record for the 1980s it ties with "Born in the U.S.A.". "Hysteria" has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.
After the album's release, Def Leppard published a book titled Animal Instinct: The Def Leppard Story, written by Rolling Stone Magazine senior editor David Fricke, on the three-year recording process of Hysteria and the tough times the band endured through the mid-1980s. During their 22 March to 10 April 2013 residency at The Joint, Def Leppard performed the album in its entirety, from start to finish. This was followed up with a live album, "Viva! Hysteria", recorded during the residency and released on 22 October 2013, which includes all of band's fourth studio album being played live. This would be followed up seven years later, as "Hysteria: Live at the O2" was released on 29 May 2020, as part of the "London to Vegas" box set. The live concert was filmed at The O2 Arena in London, England on 6 December 2018, as the band once again played the album in its entirety. Various releases have included a stand-alone edition of this concert have featured combinations of audio, DVD and Blu-Ray discs.
In 2005, "Hysteria" was ranked number 464 in Rock Hard Magazine's book "The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time". "Hysteria" got the same placement on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Best Albums of All Time", the magazine also ranked the album atop its list of the "50 Greatest Hair Metal Albums", and they placed the album on their list of "50 Rock Albums Every Country Fan Should Own". Loudwire placed the album at No. 2 on their list of the "Top 30 Hair Metal albums". "Hysteria" was also included in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die". L.A. Weekly and Consequence of Sound both ranked the album #8 on their "Hair Metal album lists". Metal Rules put the album on their list of the "Top 50 Glam Metal Albums", at #30. The Ringer called Hysteria "the greatest Hair Metal album ever made".

For the first time on vinyl, the tenth full-length studio album by legendary British Melodic Alternative/Hard Rock band.
The band's last album for Mercury Records, and it was considered by many as a return to the band's old, Rockier days.
The history of this album dates as far back as late 2003 when the band originally had the idea to record two albums simultaneously through 2004. Releasing a covers' album quietly in Spring 2004, followed later in the year/the following year by a new studio album. The finished album, the band's ninth of all original material, saw most of the songs written by one person in a change from previous albums. The first Single, "Nine Lives", featured a guest appearance by Tim McGraw on vocals. For the first time, the band released the song via the Guitar Hero III game. It was available with two classic songs as part of a three-song track pack for the Xbox 360 console. Another Single was released written by Sav called "C'mon C'mon". Videos were made for both songs.
The album was a hit with fans and critics, with a return to a more stripped down and rocking sound and no big layered production used. It entered the Top 10 of both the UK and US album charts, and also got to number one on the UK Rock album charts. The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, selling about 55 000 copies in its first week of release. It is the band's shortest album to date.
