The fourth full-length album by the legendary British Melodic Death Metal/Death 'n' Roll band.
"Heartwork" marks Carcass' return after the self-imposed hiatus that followed 1991's "Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious". It's also the pioneering Grindcore outfit's breakthrough release, successfully grafting melody onto the existing muscle of Carcass' punishing antimusic.
After a blistering opening salvo, the title track decelerates into a mid-tempo guitar lead, only to shift gears into a meaty verse that suggests the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. "Carnal Forge" and "Arbeit Macht Fleisch" are compacted with intricate, overlapping riffs that are relentless in their move forward, and yet there's still a sense of structure and melody, buried somewhere amid the carnage. Jeff Walker's vocals are consistent in their throat-ripping fierceness throughout the record, especially on "This Is Your Life", which messes with mixing to make the track truly arresting if listened to with headphones.
While of normal album length, "Heartwork" nevertheless seems over too quickly, as if its bloodthirsty front end bit off its own backside. Some purists might decry its melodic breaks for soloing or nods toward conventional structure. But "Heartwork" is that rare album that so carefully dissects and reconstructs its original form that its additional body parts seem like they were there all along.
Sure, "Heartwork" shocked the fanbase to its pyosisified core, but Carcass - who had spent their youngest years gurgling Gore (and forcing longhairs to the dictionary) with “Regurgitation of Giblets”, “Crepitating Bowel Erosion” and “Lavaging Expectorate of Lysergide Composition” - had quantum-leaped the scene they called home for good reason. They wanted to move on. By their fourth album, Carcass had reinvented Death Metal!
Basically, this is one of those albums that a fan of Metal should just own, but to say that "Heartwork" is Carcass' masterpiece would be unfair, because it's just one of them!!

Second re-release of the debut full-length album by the legendary British Goregrind/Grindcore band.
Carcass started out as a spin-off of the first Grindcore band ever emerged from the underground, namely Napalm Death. In fact, former Napalm Death member Bill Steer left the band to entirely dedicate himself to his new creature. Therefore, it's quite obvious that on the first Carcass album you can expect a Napalm Death-style Grindcore: noisy, fast and simple off-rhythm structures played with sloppy attitude, but still loud and brutal. Sure, all the aforementioned elements are present, but here we definitely have more than that.
Carcass pushes the nihilism of early Death Metal to the extreme consequences, surmounting the white noise borderline, but in a quite interesting manner. Despite the simplicity of the playing, the musicians prove to be very ingenious, working throughout the songs' phrases to put together a bunch of indiscernible guitar riffs and single-step double-bass-drumming which incredibly end up being focused. The tempos, though mostly built on bar-chords, are widely varied to grab the listener's attention, and are organized with a large sense of song-writing. It's kind of funny, 'cos at first listen this seems to be utter crap, but its hidden value is indisputable.
The vocals are shared by all the three band-members, changing' from guttural to piercing cries and consist of the sickest growling ever.
The lyrics are all about the most terrible pathologies you can imagine of, at times really disgusting, with the clear purpose to shock the audience, but the context is pretty ironic, considering that all the band-members are vegetarians (with Bill even being a vegan).
Album has an apparent anarchic feel that reveals a wide and deep approach to extreme Metal. Back in 1988 this knocked the Metal world on its ass, opening a way that many bands later explored in his entirety. In hindsight, this was a groundbreaking album and still nowadays its a darn' great work!

The sixth full-length studio album by legendary British Death Metal band.
First band’s album since “Swansong” (1996)!!!
Without a doubt, UK legends CARCASS have released several classic albums over the years and changed the trajectory of Extreme Metal with each consecutive release. Whether it was inventing Gore Grind (i.e. "Reek Of Putrefaction", "Symphonies Of Sickness") or creating the template for Melodic Death Metal (i.e. "Heartwork"), Carcass has always made records by which bars were set and rules were broken. Carcass disbanded in 1996, prior to the release of their album "Swansong". Upon their untimely demise, fans mourned the loss of the seminal act and longed that the band would one day be exhumed from their premature grave. After an 18-year hiatus, Carcass has been fully reanimated and it’s safe to say, they haven’t missed a pathological step.
Walker, Steer, and Amott reformed in 2007 with Arch Enemy drummer Daniel Erlandsson as a live act and performed at festivals around the world for the next several years. In 2008, Steer said in an interview that a new album was unlikely due to Amott's and Walker's busy schedules.
While touring in 2008, Steer watched drummer Dan Wilding play and felt inspired by his similarity to former Carcass drummer Ken Owen, who had been unable to join Carcass for the reunion due to a cerebral hemorrhage he suffered in 1999. Amott and Erlandsson left the band in 2012 to focus on Arch Enemy, and Steer and Walker recruited Wilding to record "Surgical Steel", which they financed independently as they had no label backing at the time.
With "Surgical Steel", Carcass has risen to the occasion and given fans an album that holds up to their classic repertoire, delivering another milestone in their highly influential career. Everything a Carcass fan could want is on this record, with every era of the band represented! Its genesis however was not without its fair share of blood, sweat and tears of course. Long-time producer Colin Richardson actually walked out on the mixing sessions after tracking, possibly burnt out from the stress of having to top such landmark productions as "Heartwork". The equally renowned Andy Sneap (Testament, Exodus, Megadeth) stepped in at this time to mix the record, and put the finishing touches on their long-awaited masterpiece. The result is a combination of talent that should undoubtedly go unmatched for an undetermined stretch of time!!
In an era, seemingly content to endlessly chug away at their e-strings in various rhythmic denominations, Carcass has brought the power of the riff back to a generation. Songs like "The Master Butcher’s Apron", "Unfit for Human Consumption", "The Granulating Dark Satanic Mills", "Noncompliance to ASTM F899-12 Standard", are sure to become classics and put an air-guitar in the hands of every man, woman and child within earshot! Only the choicest of cuts were made to bring us a record worthy of the Carcass legacy!! In short, "Surgical Steel" is just what the doctor ordered!!!
The album features first songs Carcass has recorded since reforming in 2007. Also, “Surgical Steel” is their first album with drummer Dan Wilding and their first to reach the Top 50 in UK album charts.
Surgical Steel was named “2013's Album of the Year” by several Metal magazines and websites, including Metal Assault, MetalSucks and Decibel Magazine.

First re-release of the fifth full-length studio album by the legendary British Melodic Death Metal/Death 'n' Roll band.
It is the only Carcass album to feature guitarist Carlo Regadas. This album was intended to be their major label debut, having been signed by Columbia Records following the success of "Heartwork", but disputes with that record company caused them to return to Earache Records. It was the band's last studio release for over 17 years, until "Surgical Steel" was released in 2013.
Although 1994's excellent "Heartwork" opus had already served notice of Carcass' increasingly commercial new direction, much of the band's loyal contingent of fans still viewed 1995's "Swansong" album not as a natural progression but as a huge betrayal. One of the leading lights of the British Grindcore movement, Carcass had made a name for themselves with their unrelenting sonic fury and unbelievably disgusting lyrics. But on "Swansong", much of that fury was reigned in to accommodate more conventional song structures topped with articulate, at times even humorous lyrics (see "Keep on Rotting in the Free World") from vocalist Jeff Walker.
With axe men Bill Steer and Carlo Regadas trading scorching leads to pave the way, the band's technical mastery and newfound melodic sensibility come through like never before, resulting in a style reminiscent of latter-day Coroner, or even Megadeth's work in the early '90s. Memorable numbers like "Tomorrow Belongs to Nobody" and "Child's Play" highlight the quartet's keen sense of dynamics, and their desire to experiment with new sounds leads to such unexpected moves as employing acoustic guitars on "Firm Hand".
Simply put, "Swansong" represents such a remarkable evolution (or de-evolution, depending, again, on your viewpoint) for Carcass that comparing it to their prior achievements leads to an interesting quandary. While it is easily the most accessible chapter of the band's career, the album hardly offers a fair introduction to the bulk of their brutal legacy. Therefore, while fans of unadulterated Grindcore should approach with caution, listeners seeking out an excellent example of Technical Thrashing will love what "Swansong" has to offer!
