First Amon Amarth album to showcase a more mid-paced and heavy sound, unlike their earlier faster works. Band return with another terrain flattening, Viking-obsessed Death Metal platter.
Vocalist Johan Hegg alternates between a whispery low rumble and an upper-register shriek, both of which are surprisingly able to render the lyrics quite intelligible at times. What's possibly most impressive about "Versus The World" is the ebb and flow of the record; there is an engaging variety of moods, tempos and textures that is lacking from the work of many similar bands. The songs are truly songs, which are thoughtfully arranged and manage to deliver melody and even beauty, along with moments of extreme brutality.
The name of Amon Amarth ever since their beginnings stands for heaviness, mighty, pounding compositions that make you imagine the Viking warriors on their dragon ships, fighting against intruders or being out on a pillage tour; stands for grand melodies, lines, no, arches of great melodies that intertwine with the powerful and crushing rhythm-guitars, forming an all-encompassing machine, towering over you, shadowing everything in its monumental size; stands for a forceful sound that definitely can blow you against the wall and hold you there with ease.
Amon Amarth seem to be incapable of doing a weak album and with their trademarks they not only managed to create another high quality masterpiece, but they definitely also have their own sound within the much crowded Death Metal scene, as the title implies, these five Swedes take on the world, with an album like "Versus The World", the odds are damn good that they will conquer it!!

The album continued band's slower, heavier sound, which started on the previous album "Versus The World". Musically, "Fate Of Norns" is Spartan Death Metal built on epic, anthemic melodies, a perfect example of the Iron Maiden/Death Metal fusion tagged the "New Wave of Swedish Heavy Metal".
And lyrically it's still full of Viking imagery, as songs like "Valkyries Ride" and "The Pursuit of Vikings" attest. It's the same theme that these guys have been hammering at since their 1996 debut mini-album, "Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds". It's also a theme that literally hundreds of other Scandinavian bands have hammered at too, most of them leaving it a hackneyed corpse ready for the pyre. Which is where Amon Amarth have set themselves apart. These aren't just songs written about Vikings, they are written by Vikings. They're ready for death in "Arson" where one of five left to burn survives and comes back for revenge in that tracks' sequel, "Once Sealed in Blood". Blood lust themes aren't unusual, but Amon Amarth tackle them with a depth often lacking from their contemporaries.
A knotty subject for a band and a style more given to crushing skulls than tears, but that kind of depth is what Amon Amarth have brought to "Fate Of Norns" and what makes it stand out in a sea of barbarian pretenders.

But despite their lyrical bent (including Dungeons & Dragons titles like "Ride for Vengeance", "Victorious March", and "The Dragons' Flight Across the Waves"), Sweden's Amon Amarth eschews the expected Germanic Power Metal usually associated with such subject for brutally intense Scandinavian Death Metal. But they get the job done with plenty of spirit, more than competent songwriting, and excellent musicianship - most notably from future Opeth drummer Martin Lopez. The song that bears the band's namesake is probably the most memorable, as it contains the chaotic noises of battle, the screams of the dying, and much sword-clashing to boot. Ultimately, Amon Amarth's war hymns often take themselves a bit too seriously and are bound to provoke either delirious head-banging or irresistible laughter, but what else would you expect from good Heavy Metal?

Aside from being a brilliant return to form, "With Oden On Our Side" also marked the first time that Amon Amartth took sound quality seriously. All of their previous full-length albums, a thin, reedy quality to them. Jens Bogren’s superb mixing and engineering changed all of that — "With Oden On Our Side" sounds fantastic.
On the album opening "Valhall Awaits Me", singer Johan Hegg's vocal lines aren't merely growled syllables. But don't be worried, longtime Amarth fans, it's not like the Swedish outfit has enlisted the help of Burt Bacharach to soften things up, as Hegg's vocals do resort back to the expected Death Metal growl soon enough, especially on such tracks as "Under the Northern Star". Yet all the while, Hegg manages to hold his own against the riffs and sometimes-Iron Maiden-esque guitar harmonies supplied by Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg. The aforementioned guitar duo also shows they have a talent for penning Industrial strength riffs as well, evidenced by such tracks as "Hermods Ride to Hell" and "Runes to My Memory". Fredrik Andersson’s kick drum shakes the very Earth, and would frighten any army stupid enough to challenge these Vikings. Cymbals are distinct and each hit reverberates out into the room. Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg’s guitars and Ted Lundström’s bass have weight and power behind them that we dream about. This album simply destroys the argument that Metal “needs to be loud”. Metal needs to be dynamic! Let the listener decide what the volume should be!!

Alongside "With Oden On Our Side", "Twilight Of The Thunder God" just might be the strongest record Amon Amarth has written thus far. Certainly, it's essentially the same as all the rest of their albums, but it manages to get by without sounding redundant or stagnant. And this is certainly more than most of their contemporaries can attest to, there's no denying that.
If Extreme Metal existed back in the days of Vikings, Sweden's Amon Amarth would undoubtedly be the musical choice of vessels sailing rough and treacherous seas. And on the seventh studio effort overall by the quintet, Amon Amarth sticks closely to the same sound and approach that got them this far in the first place. But unlike their prior studio efforts, several renowned names within the Metal community drop by to lend a heavy hand, including Entombed vocalist Lars-Göran Petrov on "Guardians of Asgaard", Children Of Bodom guitarist Roope Latvala provides a guitar solo on the title track, while Apocalyptica is heard on "Live for the Kill". As evidenced by such ditties as "Varyags of Miklagaard" and "Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags", technically demanding musicality, Godzilla-like growls, and rhythms/tempos compared to horses galloping into war are all proudly on display throughout "Twilight Of The Thunder God".
All in all, "Twilight Of The Thunder God" is simply a fun listen, and one of the most exciting Metal albums of the year, nothing more, nothing less. Considering that that is most likely all that Amon Amarth set out to do, they've passed with flying colours!
The album debuted at number 50 on the Billboard 200, and debuted at number 11 on the Swedish album charts. This makes the band's first album to chart on the top 200, and also the band's highest chart debut in their native country of Sweden, debuting 10 places higher than their previous release, "With Oden On Our Side". Also the album was ranked number six on Metal Hammer's Top 50 Albums of 2008.

Amon Amarth's eighth album is an important one in their discography, because it follows their breakthrough disc, 2008's "Twilight Of The Thunder God". That album, laden with guest appearances (Children of Bodom's Roopi Latvala, Entombed's LG Petrov, the cellists of Apocalyptica), was the Swedish band's most elaborate and powerful statement to date.
The album's ten songs are typical anthemic Amon Amarth tracks, built for headbanging and chanting along with the powerful, warrior's-code choruses. Some, like "Destroyers of the Universe" and "War of the Gods", but particularly "A Beast Am I", are among the fastest songs the band has ever recorded, while others, like "Töck's Taunt: Loke's Treachery, Pt. II" and "The Last Stand of Frej", are slow, even brooding.
The production has a bit more aggression than "Twilight" had, but the songs are arguably even catchier this time out, with some surprisingly clean guitar leads and atmospheric melodies emerging from the hair-spinning roar. A few subtle production flourishes, the sounds of clashing swords on "War of the Gods" and crying ravens on "Töck's Taunt," plus some strings on "For Victory or Death" and the album-closing "Doom Over Dead Man", bolster the sound somewhat, but other than that it's up to the five members of Amon Amarth to keep the listener happy with nothing but guitars, bass, drums, and Johan Hegg's barrel-chested roars, and they do that with admirable skill.
They're one of the most consistent bands in Metal, and this is a terrific example of them playing to their strengths!

Amon Amarth does one thing: Melodic yet Brutal Viking Death Metal. And they do it better than anyone else. "The Avenger" is an album that inspires one to grow a beard and take up arms against the Christian oppressors like no other. The twin guitar assault is the spear of Odin thrust into your heart, Johan Hegg's growling vocals are the battle cry of a thousand frenzied berserkers, the relentless double kick echoes with the thunderclap of Mjolnir.
There is not a single weak point over the course of the album's duration. It's looks like "The Avenger" is the best Viking Metal album ever put out. Each song is a well-constructed epic tale of Nordic folklore, accompanied most appropriately by the all best elements of the Melodic Death Metal genre. This is the album that should inspire artists to paint vast murals depicting proud Viking warriors dying gloriously on the field of battle, slaughtering the Christian dogs till their swords fall from their grasp, cursing their enemies with their last gasping breath. There is no other band that sounds like Amon Amarth, no other band that so clearly brings to mind such striking imagery.
The album’s only one fault would be it's too short. "The Avenger" clocks in at just over 36 minutes with only seven songs. It's a brief listen, though an intense one from start to finish. But considering how often these masterful architects pump out consistently great material, it’s an easily forgivable fault.
Remastered re-release contains a bonus track, "Thor Arise", a re-recording of the title track from their first demo, "Thor Arise".

The twin guitar assault is the spear of Odin thrust into your heart, Johan Hegg's growling vocals are the battle cry of a thousand frenzied berserkers, the relentless double kick echoes with the thunderclap of Mjolnir.
There is not a single weak point over the course of the album's duration. It's looks like "The Avenger" is the best Viking Metal album ever put out. Each song is a well-constructed epic tale of Nordic folklore, accompanied most appropriately by the all best elements of the Melodic Death Metal genre. This is the album that should inspire artists to paint vast murals depicting proud Viking warriors dying gloriously on the field of battle, slaughtering the Christian dogs till their swords fall from their grasp, cursing their enemies with their last gasping breath. There is no other band that sounds like Amon Amarth, no other band that so clearly brings to mind such striking imagery.
The album’s only one fault would be it's too short. "The Avenger" clocks in at just over 36 minutes with only seven songs. It's a brief listen, though an intense one from start to finish. But considering how often these masterful architects pump out consistently great material, it’s an easily forgivable fault.
Remastered re-release contains a bonus track, "Thor Arise", a re-recording of the title track from their first demo, "Thor Arise".

The riffing from guitar and drums is workmanlike, and Hegg's vocal rants carry all the requisite ferocity. During slower, more musically focused numbers like "As Long as the Raven Flies" and the opener, "Bastards of a Lying Breed", certain attributes of '80s Thrash and song-driven Metal create spaces that enhance the rest of this album's dense material.
"The Crusher" blends seamlessly with the rest of Amon Amarth's Metal Blade catalogue. There isn't a standout among these recordings, as their textural differences are negligible. Listeners who enjoy this kind of Metal should certainly check out Amon Amarth, and "The Crusher" would be a good place to start!

First Amon Amarth album to showcase a more mid-paced and heavy sound, unlike their earlier faster works. Band return with another terrain flattening, Viking-obsessed Death Metal platter.
Vocalist Johan Hegg alternates between a whispery low rumble and an upper-register shriek, both of which are surprisingly able to render the lyrics quite intelligible at times. What's possibly most impressive about "Versus The World" is the ebb and flow of the record; there is an engaging variety of moods, tempos and textures that is lacking from the work of many similar bands. The songs are truly songs, which are thoughtfully arranged and manage to deliver melody and even beauty, along with moments of extreme brutality.
The name of Amon Amarth ever since their beginnings stands for heaviness, mighty, pounding compositions that make you imagine the Viking warriors on their dragon ships, fighting against intruders or being out on a pillage tour; stands for grand melodies, lines, no, arches of great melodies that intertwine with the powerful and crushing rhythm-guitars, forming an all-encompassing machine, towering over you, shadowing everything in its monumental size; stands for a forceful sound that definitely can blow you against the wall and hold you there with ease.
Amon Amarth seem to be incapable of doing a weak album and with their trademarks they not only managed to create another high quality masterpiece, but they definitely also have their own sound within the much crowded Death Metal scene, as the title implies, these five Swedes take on the world, with an album like "Versus The World", the odds are damn good that they will conquer it!!
In 2005, "Versus The World" was ranked number 413 in Rock Hard magazine's book of The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time.

After nine albums spent plundering, pillaging, and hoisting their horns of mead against the backdrop of a smoke-filled, viscera-stained battlefield, it's a wonder that Amon Amarth took so long to deliver a proper concept album. The band's first concept record in their storied career tells a tragic tale of love and revenge, backed by the Swedes' trademark melodic, anthemic Metal, which was produced and mixed once again by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Testament, Accept). The epic original story is set in the world of the Jomsvikings, the legendary order of mercenary Vikings.
Relentlessly brutish, yet never bereft of melody, "Jomsviking" doesn't deviate from the veteran Metal horde's tried-and-true foundation of punishing double-kick drums, Iron Maiden-esque guitarmonies, and gutter-scooped vocals, but it does toss in some cinematic flair to help frame the story – the band even brought in Doro Pesch to play the Lagertha to Johan Hegg's Ragnar on the penultimate neck-snapper "A Dream That Cannot Be". While long-time fans might be a bit thrown off by some of the more melodic Traditional Metal elements throughout "Jomsviking", the music is well suited to both the concept's narrative and a natural evolution of Amon Amarth's more well known style.
