"The Strength / The Sound / The Songs" is probably best described as a compilation album of all of Volbeat’s previous demos, strung together to produce their first official debut album. Does this affect the quality of the music and bring this debut to the level of a weak band? F*****ng no!!! This is a strong debut and a great way to introduce a collection of impressive tracks that never made a decent release in Europe or the States.
Released in 2005, the album initially failed to chart. However, in July 2006 the album entered the Danish Charts, peaking at number 18. And it would stay on that chart for 21 non-consecutive weeks.
The only official single released from the album was the band's cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Wanna Be With You", which was released in 2006. The band also filmed a music video for the Single.
Volbeat's label, Mascot Records, had a limited distribution in the United States, meaning that the album went largely unnoticed in that country. Volbeat would not break through in the United States until 2010 with their fourth album, "Beyond Hell / Above Heaven".
Volbeat’s style is a perfect balance of heaviness and acoustic melody, intertwined with heavy, Thrashy riffs and 1950s Bebop. While Volbeat perfected some of these styles and riffs on succeeding albums, the initial characteristics and attitude of what they would become drench this album.
This is Volbeat’s most fun album due to its mishmash of great tunes that don’t follow a concept or order any further than the organization of the complete album. While the succeeding Volbeat albums are great for their concepts and structure, Volbeat’s debut is the best example of an all-out album with enough diversity, to give it completeness. Musically, the album is more melodic and less Heavy Metal sounding than previous albums. For the first time Volbeat are using female backing vocals on several songs by singer Mia Maja, and "Goodbye Forever" features the Harlem Gospel Choir. Poulsen has said he is the most proud of the album's choruses, which he has called "the strongest I've ever done". Singer Danko Jones features on the song "Black Rose", who Poulsen had stayed in touch with since he first met him when Jones' band played a concert in Copenhagen in 2006.
"The Devil's Bleeding Crown" was released as the album's first Single in North America on 7 April 2016. The single peaked at number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart in the United States.
Internationally, "For Evigt" was released as the first Single on 29 April 2016. The song features Danish singer Johan Olsen of Rock group Magtens Korridorer, and is the second collaboration between Olsen and Volbeat, following "The Garden's Tale" (2007). "For Evigt" is replaced by "The Bliss" on the North American version, where the Danish chorus sung by Olsen is sung by Michael Poulsen in English.
"Seal the Deal" was released as the album's second international Single on 20 May 2016. On 13 September 2016, it is set to be sent to US active Rock radio as the album's second Single in North America. "Seal the Deal" peaked at number three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart.
"Black Rose" was released as the third Single in North America, where it was sent to active Rock radio stations in the US on 7 March 2017. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart in the US, becoming Volbeat's sixth number-one Single on the chart.
The album debuted at number one in Denmark. It sold 8 336 units in its opening week, the biggest first-week sales of 2016. The band's first album with guitarist Rob Caggiano and their final album with bassist Anders Kjølholm.
With the release of each new album, Volbeat have been getting bigger and bigger, nonetheless thanks to Metallica who embraced them and took them out on tour.
After four albums which were produced by Jacob Hansen, the band desperately needed a change in their sound. In early 2013, Volbeat announced that the former Anthrax lead guitarist, Rob Caggiano, would be producing the album as well as recording guest solos. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Caggiano had officially joined the band as its second guitarist, after being asked to do so by the other band members. Singer and guitarist Michael Poulsen said of the chemistry between Caggiano and the rest of the band: "The collaboration with Rob in the studio was so inspiring and in good spirit that we decided to keep him. Basically, we went into the studio as a three-piece and came out as a whole band!"
The result is the Volbeat album with a refreshed sound, but at the same time an album that is true to the band's trademark sound. The balance between the instruments is much better and especially the drum sound is improved, in such a way that it sounds less like Pantera’s "Vulgar Display Of Power" (Terry Date) and more like Anthrax’s "We’ve Come For You All" (Caggiano). This, together with working on modifying the drum sound to a different nature of the songs, has resulted in a more homogenized sound of the album. This is most noticeable in the songs that combine the Country elements with full-on Heavy Metal.
Poulsen’s James Hetfield-meets-Elvis Presley vocals are as good as ever, with a bit more Hetfield, this time around. Caggiano’s mark on this album is mostly noticeable in fine production, but he delivers also a couple of his typical Metallic guitar leads.
The track "Room 24", with vocalist King Diamond, was made available for the fans as a free download on 5 April 2013, and was later nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
The album entered the Billboard 200 in the United States at number nine. The album sold 39 000 in its first week. It is the first time a Danish act has charted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 since "Aquarium" by Aqua charted at number seven in 1997. As of April 2016, "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" had sold 308 000 copies in the US.
In the United Kingdom, "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" debuted at number 78 in the UK Albums Chart, selling 1 276 copies in its first week. As of June 2016, the album had sold 18 671 copies in the UK.
The album entered the Media Control Charts in Germany at number one and received immediate Gold status. It sold more than 100 000 in its first week.

With the release of each new album, Volbeat have been getting bigger and bigger, nonetheless thanks to Metallica who embraced them and took them out on tour.
After four albums which were produced by Jacob Hansen, the band desperately needed a change in their sound. In early 2013, Volbeat announced that the former Anthrax lead guitarist, Rob Caggiano, would be producing the album as well as recording guest solos. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Caggiano had officially joined the band as its second guitarist, after being asked to do so by the other band members. Singer and guitarist Michael Poulsen said of the chemistry between Caggiano and the rest of the band: "The collaboration with Rob in the studio was so inspiring and in good spirit that we decided to keep him. Basically, we went into the studio as a three-piece and came out as a whole band!"
The result is the Volbeat album with a refreshed sound, but at the same time an album that is true to the band's trademark sound. The balance between the instruments is much better and especially the drum sound is improved, in such a way that it sounds less like Pantera’s "Vulgar Display Of Power" (Terry Date) and more like Anthrax’s "We’ve Come For You All" (Caggiano). This, together with working on modifying the drum sound to a different nature of the songs, has resulted in a more homogenized sound of the album. This is most noticeable in the songs that combine the Country elements with full-on Heavy Metal.
Poulsen’s James Hetfield-meets-Elvis Presley vocals are as good as ever, with a bit more Hetfield, this time around. Caggiano’s mark on this album is mostly noticeable in fine production, but he delivers also a couple of his typical Metallic guitar leads.
The track "Room 24", with vocalist King Diamond, was made available for the fans as a free download on 5 April 2013, and was later nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
The album entered the Billboard 200 in the United States at number nine. The album sold 39 000 in its first week. It is the first time a Danish act has charted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 since "Aquarium" by Aqua charted at number seven in 1997. As of April 2016, "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" had sold 308 000 copies in the US.
In the United Kingdom, "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies" debuted at number 78 in the UK Albums Chart, selling 1 276 copies in its first week. As of June 2016, the album had sold 18 671 copies in the UK.
The album entered the Media Control Charts in Germany at number one and received immediate Gold status. It sold more than 100 000 in its first week.

For the first time Volbeat are using female backing vocals on several songs by singer Mia Maja, and "Goodbye Forever" features the Harlem Gospel Choir. Poulsen has said he is the most proud of the album's choruses, which he has called "the strongest I've ever done". Singer Danko Jones features on the song "Black Rose", who Poulsen had stayed in touch with since he first met him when Jones' band played a concert in Copenhagen in 2006.
"The Devil's Bleeding Crown" was released as the album's first Single in North America on 7 April 2016. The single peaked at number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs chart in the United States.
Internationally, "For Evigt" was released as the first Single on 29 April 2016. The song features Danish singer Johan Olsen of Rock group Magtens Korridorer, and is the second collaboration between Olsen and Volbeat, following "The Garden's Tale" (2007). "For Evigt" is replaced by "The Bliss" on the North American version, where the Danish chorus sung by Olsen is sung by Michael Poulsen in English.

"The Strength / The Sound / The Songs" is probably best described as a compilation album of all of Volbeat’s previous demos, strung together to produce their first official debut album. Does this affect the quality of the music and bring this debut to the level of a weak band? F*****ng no!!! This is a strong debut and a great way to introduce a collection of impressive tracks that never made a decent release in Europe or the States.
Released in 2005, the album initially failed to chart. However, in July 2006 the album entered the Danish Charts, peaking at number 18. And it would stay on that chart for 21 non-consecutive weeks.
The only official single released from the album was the band's cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Wanna Be With You", which was released in 2006. The band also filmed a music video for the Single.
Volbeat's label, Mascot Records, had a limited distribution in the United States, meaning that the album went largely unnoticed in that country. Volbeat would not break through in the United States until 2010 with their fourth album, "Beyond Hell / Above Heaven".

"The Strength / The Sound / The Songs" is probably best described as a compilation album of all of Volbeat’s previous demos, strung together to produce their first official debut album. Does this affect the quality of the music and bring this debut to the level of a weak band? F*****ng no!!! This is a strong debut and a great way to introduce a collection of impressive tracks that never made a decent release in Europe or the States.
Released in 2005, the album initially failed to chart. However, in July 2006 the album entered the Danish Charts, peaking at number 18. And it would stay on that chart for 21 non-consecutive weeks.
The only official single released from the album was the band's cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Wanna Be With You", which was released in 2006. The band also filmed a music video for the Single.
Volbeat's label, Mascot Records, had a limited distribution in the United States, meaning that the album went largely unnoticed in that country. Volbeat would not break through in the United States until 2010 with their fourth album, "Beyond Hell / Above Heaven".

"The Strength / The Sound / The Songs" is probably best described as a compilation album of all of Volbeat’s previous demos, strung together to produce their first official debut album. Does this affect the quality of the music and bring this debut to the level of a weak band? F*****ng no!!! This is a strong debut and a great way to introduce a collection of impressive tracks that never made a decent release in Europe or the States.
Released in 2005, the album initially failed to chart. However, in July 2006 the album entered the Danish Charts, peaking at number 18. And it would stay on that chart for 21 non-consecutive weeks.
The only official single released from the album was the band's cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Wanna Be With You", which was released in 2006. The band also filmed a music video for the Single.
Volbeat's label, Mascot Records, had a limited distribution in the United States, meaning that the album went largely unnoticed in that country. Volbeat would not break through in the United States until 2010 with their fourth album, "Beyond Hell / Above Heaven".
Volbeat’s style is a perfect balance of heaviness and acoustic melody, intertwined with heavy, Thrashy riffs and 1950s Bebop. While Volbeat perfected some of these styles and riffs on succeeding albums, the initial characteristics and attitude of what they would become drench this album.
This is Volbeat’s most fun album due to its mishmash of great tunes that don’t follow a concept or order any further than the organization of the complete album. While the succeeding Volbeat albums are great for their concepts and structure, Volbeat’s debut is the best example of an all-out album with enough diversity, to give it completeness. Everything, from the catchy as all hell "Caroline Leaving" and "Say Your Number" to the ballsy "Rebel Monster" and "Pool of Booze, Booze, Booza" to the mellow (yet heavy) "Soulsweeper" and the Dusty Springfield cover of "I Only Wanna Be With You", gives the album diversity, groove, and melody.

"Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood" is the follow-up to "Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil", which achieved Platinum status in Denmark, and cemented Volbeat's popularity in Denmark as well as increasing their popularity in nearby countries considerably.
"Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood" was recorded in Hansen Studios of Jacob Hansen, who also produced the two previous records. The album features 14 new tracks, including a Jimmy Work cover, "Making Believe", as a bonus track on all editions (the song was also recorded by Social Distortion on their "Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell" album, but was originally written and performed by Jimmy Work. Volbeat's cover was based on the version by Social Distortion).
"Still Counting" would reappear on "Beyond Hell/Above Heaven". On 21 July 2012, "Still Counting" was the number one song on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Seven of the songs share a common lyrical theme which will be continued on future records, the artwork is also based on this storyline. Cover artwork made by Karsten Sand.
