The debut solo album of classical music by legendary Finnish Operatic soprano singer.
Recorded 21st and 22nd November 2011 at Lakeuden Risti Church, built on the design by architect Alvar Aalto in the middle of XX century in the Finnish town Seinäjoki, the album offers twelve different compositions of the classical "Ave Maria" theme, performed by Tarja with music of various composers, among them Paolo Tosti, David Popper, Astor Piazzolla, Johann Sebastian Bach / Charles Gounod and many others. The closing track of the album presents a composition by Tarja Turunen herself. On the album, you can hear the church organ, cello and harp.
Tarja Turunen started her career with classical music. The classically trained soprano studied Church Music at Sibelius Academy in Finland as well as German Lied at the Music University of Karlsruhe, Germany. From 1996 to 2005, Turunen was the vocalist in symphonic metal band Nightwish. Aftere, she started solo-cariere as a Tarja band.
"All the musicians performed the songs together with me without an audience. Nothing has been edited nor any studio tricks have been used. So what you hear on the record, is purely how the songs sounded in Lakeuden Risti church during the recording session", - Tarja Turunen.

The album was well received among the critics and the fans; the critics generally praised Tarja's voice and originality in the album. To promote the album, Tarja started the "What Lies Beneath World Tour" on 12 June 2010, which ended on April 8, 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Album sold around 1,300 copies in the United States in its first week of release and was landed at position 24 on the Billboard's Top Heatseekers, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists. In Finland album ranked at 6th position after two months on the official Finnish charts, also spending two months on the German Top 100, one and a half month on the Austrian Top 40, and a full month on the charts in Switzerland, Belgium and Greece, ending 2010 at 13th position on Billboard's Top 100 of best-selling albums in Europe.
Remastered 2024, heavyweight 180 g double vinyl in gatefold cover includes three bonus tracks.
