This 2002 remixed version of the album has met with mixed reaction; many elements found in the original mix are not present in the remix, namely several lead guitar parts. In addition, the song "You're No Different" has an alternate ending and "Centre of Eternity" has an altered intro segment. This edition also includes the bonus tracks "Spiders" and "One Up the 'B' Side".

The album was Osbourne's first release following his departure from Black Sabbath and marks his second effort to begin a solo career (his first being in 1978 with members of Necromandus using the name Blizzard Of Ozz). This is also the first of two studio albums Osbourne recorded with guitarist Randy Rhoads prior to Rhoads' death in 1982. The album was a commercial success, being certified 4x Platinum in the U.S., a feat Osbourne would not achieve again until the release of "No More Tears" in 1991. The album has sold over 6000000 copies to date worldwide, making it Osbourne's best-selling solo album. The 2002 remixed reissue was derided by fans due to the removal of Daisley and Kerslake's original bass and drum tracks. The re-issue featured re-recorded bass and drum tracks contributed by Osbourne's then-bassist and drummer Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin. The move was suspected of being retaliatory in nature, as Daisley and Kerslake had successfully sued Osbourne and his wife/manager Sharon in court, winning songwriting credits and royalties for their contributions to "Diary of a Madman". Sharon later stated that Ozzy and not herself was responsible for the decision to re-record the parts, stating "because of Daisley and Kerslake's abusive and unjust behavior, Ozzy wanted to remove them from these recordings. We turned a negative into a positive by adding a fresh sound to the original albums. "However, Osbourne contradicted his wife's claim in his 2009 autobiography, stating that the decision to re-record the original bass and drum parts was strictly Sharon's decision, and that "I didn't have anything to do with that decision." He said his wife "just snapped" and had it done without his knowledge. He also stated that "a sticker was put on the covers telling everyone about it", though in fact the sticker was not initially placed on the re-issue and was only placed on the covers at a later date due to fan outcry over the altered recordings.
To date, the album has sold over 3.2 million copies worldwide.

Starting his solo bid almost immediately after his departure from Black Sabbath, Ozzy turned in classic Metal albums with early-'80s Randy Rhoads collaborations like "Blizzard Of Ozz" and "Diary Of A Madman", and stayed consistently strong with many Platinum-selling albums throughout the '90s, 2000s, and beyond.
The Ozzman has never shied away from live records, repackagings, or greatest-hits collections, either, and "Memoirs Of A Madman" collects standout cuts from each of his 11 studio albums, offering a full range of singles that shows the full spectrum of his development as the ever-menacing Prince of Heavy Metal Darkness. The 17 tracks here run in chronological order, from 1980’s easily recognizable “Crazy Train” through to particularly dated-sounding early-'90s power ballads like “Mama I’m Coming Home” up to “Let Me Hear You Scream” from his 2010 studio offering "Scream". His Sabbath days get a nod or two as well, with a cover of their brooding piano ballad “Changes” that Ozzy and daughter Kelly serve up as an awkward daddy-daughter duet, and an unreleased live recording of “Paranoid” from 2010.
Memoirs Of A Madman" CD has sold 4200 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 90 on The Billboard 200 chart.

The first live audio recording by legendary British Heavy Metal/Hard Rock band.
After been out of Black Sabbath a couple of years, his ongoing cocaine use, and supported only by his future wife, Sharon (the daughter of Sabbath manager Don Arden), Ozzy was essentially broke, and had to start from the ground up when launching his newfound solo career. Unlike most lead singers who go solo in order to distance themselves artistically from the band they had just left, Ozzy stuck with the type of music he knew: deep, heavy, slow moving Rock with lyrical themes centered around Satan, the Occult, the presence of evil in the world and drug use. Needless to say, Osbourne with the "Blizzard Of Oz" simply picked up where the Osbourne-led Sabbath left off. Ozzy had success when he formed his now legendary solo band, and embarked on the controversial Blizzard Of Oz Tour.
On July 28th, 1981, the appearance was recorded live at Théâtre St-Denis, Montreal, Canada, and broadcast on the KROQ “King Biscuit Flower Hour” radio show. What makes this performance particularly special, is that it is one of the few professional live recordings made of Ozzy and Randy Rhoads on stage together prior to his tragic death in February 1982. The rhythm section of bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Tommy Aldridge was rock solid, but it was the innovative and fluid guitar work of the mighty Randy Rhoads that made this period in Osbourne's career so important. While he was alive, critics and fans were saying Rhoads was as good as Eddie Van Halen; who knows what great music he could have made had he not died so early in life.
Consisting mostly of material from his first LP, "Blizzard Of Oz", and what was to become his second album, "Diary Of A Madman", these shows clearly demonstrated the excitement Osbourne was creating with his newfound solo project. Ozzy and Sabbath fans alike will love this recording, even though he only does one song from his Sabbath days, the set-closing "Paranoid".
