Originally released in 1992 on VHS, it was re-released on DVD in 2003.
When Joe Satriani's "Surfing With The Alien" hit the street in 1987, people took the record to the heart. The unknown artist on the then underground Relativity label, struck the right chord with music fans around the world with his powerful signature style. A baffled and astonished record industry could only step back and watch in amazement as "Surfing With The Alien" went on to defy traditional Instrumental Rock limitations to become a multi-million selling Grammy-nominated critical tour de force. Joe was touted as the soft-spoken maverick, a Rock'n'Roll guitar-slinger who proved there was an audience for music that didn't fit into tidy categories and opened the door for the slew of Rock instrumentalists who have since followed his path.
As with any overnight success story, there's more sweetness and sweat than meets the eye. This video, "The Satch Tapes", explores Joe's up-and-coming days and provides a look into the development of a committed artist. While Joe talks candidly about the ups and downs of "making it" in the music business, "The Satch Tapes" presents a rare opportunity to get to know the reserved artist through his anecdotes on life and music. The continual thread running throughout the video is Joe and his guitar as we're led behind the scenes: into the studio with Gregg and Matt Bissonette working with mega-producer Andy Johns recording The Extremist, on tour with the Flying In A Blue Dream band, and some really cool historical footage. G3 is a legendary concert tour organized by guitarist Joe Satriani, that brings together three guitar virtuosos for solo sets and collaborative jams, featuring him alongside two other guitarists.
Since its inception in 1995, with the first tour in 1996 featuring Satriani, Steve Vai (Satriani's former student), and Eric Johnson, G3 has toured most years and has featured many guitarists, including Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Robert Fripp, Paul Gilbert, Steve Morse, Steve Lukather, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker, Adrian Legg, Phil Collen and many other special guests, including Tony MacAlpine, Johnny Hiland, Keith More, Chris Duarte, Andy Timmons, Neal Schon, Gary Hoey, Brian May, Billy Gibbons, Johnny A, George Lynch, Patrick Rondat, Guthrie Govan, Alejandro Silva, and Eric Sardinas.
Three DVDs from the tours were released to date: "G3: Live In Concert" (1997) with Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai, "G3: Live In Denver" (2004) with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen, and "G3: Live In Tokyo" (2005) with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and John Petrucci.
"G3: Live In Denver" was recorded at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, on October 20, 2003. It also includes a "Fretcam" feature, biographies, lighting plot diagrams, and more. Despite the name on the DVD case, when played the title that appears on the screen is "G3: Live From Denver" rather than "G3: Live In Denver". Along with the DVD, a Double CD album was released under the name "G3: Rockin' In The Free World (2004).
"G3" is a significant event in Rock guitar world, showcasing technical mastery and creative collaboration, inspiring guitarists globally.
