First re-release of the sixteenth single by the legendary British Heavy Metal band.
It's the first single for the band's seventh full-length studio album, "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son" (1988).
According to Adrian Smith, the song "Can I Play with Madness" "actually started life as a ballad I had been working on called "On the Wings of Eagles". Then Bruce had a verse for it but wanted to change the title to "Can I Play with Madness". I must admit, it did sound better that way. So we took that one and Steve liked it, too. It was Steve who came up with the time change in the middle and the instrumental passage, which again gave it that lift it needed". According to Dickinson, however, Harris' addition resulted in "a big row ... Adrian absolutely hated it". The song is about a young man who wants to learn the future from an old prophet with a crystal ball. The young man thinks he is going mad and seeks the old prophet to help him cope with his visions/nightmares. The prophet's advice is ignored by the young man and they become angry with each other.
But the real reasons to acquire this single come in the form of the "Black Bart Blues", which is like near 7 minute jam section which is actually comprised of great riffing. There is also a Nicko McBrain 'answering machine' in the song, and a bunch of his tomfoolery near the end. In other words, for the first 3-4 minutes, you get a decent Iron Maiden jam loaded with NWOBHM goodness!
The single hit number 3 in the UK charts.
