"At The Edge Of Time" is a fairly diverse album that got influences from Euro-Folk to Classical to Progressive Rock. These German veterans have been around since the mid-’80s, and whether they are being influenced for, "At The Edge Of Time" maintains a stubbornly pre-’90s outlook - both musically and lyrically. The lyrics are strictly fantasy-based, as were so many pre-90s Metal lyrics. Blind Guardian continue to live and breath the ’70s and ’80s, reminding us that they enjoy the pomp of Queen as much as they enjoy the pomp of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.
Some will complain that this 64-minute CD sounds dated, but then, dated is exactly what Blind Guardian are going for; they don’t run away from it, they embrace it. Besides, one man’s dated is another man’s classicist.
Maybe not quite essential, "At The Edge Of Time" is an engaging album that not only achieves a fair amount of diversity within a Power and Progressive Metal framework - it is also one of the more consistent releases that Blind Guardian have provided in the 21st century!

It's a very good record, superb release from an excellent band, very consistent throughout. It has some nice twists to it, especially with the Folk influences, and the lyrical content at times deviating from the Blind Guardian’s fantasy-based lyrics. It conforms to all the clichés the other albums this band has released conform to.
If you've liked Blind Guardian all these years, you'll approve of this one for its consistency and innovations at the same time. It's a step back, but a step forward at the same time! Good Power Metal don't get any better than this!!

It is also their first album without former session member Oliver Holzwarth on bass guitar since 1995's "Imaginations From The Other Side", with Barend Courbois replacing him. "Twilight of the Gods" was released as a single to promote this album.
A concept album and a sequel to "Imaginations From The Other Side", "Beyond The Red Mirror" has been described by Hansi Kürsch as "A story between science fiction and fantasy. The two worlds described have changed dramatically for the worse since then. While there used to be several passages between the worlds, there is only one gate left now: The Red Mirror. It has to be found at any cost".
"Beyond The Red Mirror" is a new level of symphonic involvement, founded in the kind of orchestral placement that made "At The Edge Of Time" such an improvement over the questionable and seemingly self-allusive "A Twist In The Myth". From its majestic opening in "The Ninth Wave," the continuation of the band's recent aims are determined in an effort four-and-a-half years in the making. As such, listeners can rest assured that they are in for another album experience that has been crafted with attention down to the detail.
A wholly cohesive and organised structure is this album's greatest strength, the driving force in what emphasises consistency in a manner unlike any of Blind Guardian's preceding records; an impressive feat considering their tendency to avoid inconsistency. A number of tracks are of a prevailingly up-tempo delivery that harkens to the band's Speed Metal origins with their irresistible drive and situated within an album best demonstrating Blind Guardian's symphonically enhanced modern sound, such as those occupying the album's centre in "Ashes Of Eternity" and "The Holy Grail", as the rhythm section dominates and urges the track-list onward. A majority of the record, however, seeks close arrangement with the orchestral component to form and maintain denser compositions with a tight unison between band and the enlisted grand orchestras and choirs (two and three, respectively). The purpose of this album is to cement such a uniformity in the style Blind Guardian have come to define over their thirty year journey, spearheading the Power Metal genre in a fashion entirely their own, ever seeking to enhance themselves to deliver fresh and engaging material, of which "Beyond The Red Mirror" is no exception.

The tracks included in this album recorded during Blind Guardian's 2015 European Beyond The Red Mirror Tour. According to Nuclear Blast, a total of 30 shows from that tour (on a total of 38 gigs between April 2 and June 2) had been recorded with an average length of 2 hours, 15 minutes per show. Hansi Kürsch added that they had recorded also other concerts during the worldwide tour, but the fact that the European "recordings were all already nearly perfect, was the decisive reason for us to only use songs from this first part of the tour. In comparison to their compatriots, their sophomore release can be considered underrated compared to the rest of their discography. Granted, it is still an important album in the early formative years of Power Metal. On "Battalions Of Fear" they had a raw proto-Power Metal sound, taking the template from bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and simply playing it faster. They took this Speed Metal sound and amplified it further on "Follow The Blind", playing furious tempo songs interspersed with the occasional Folky keyboard. The Speed Metal here is almost Thrash Metal-like, minus the aggression. According to guitarist Marcus Siepen, "When we were doing "Follow The Blind", we were listening to a lot of Thrash Metal bands like Testament or Forbidden, and that's why "Follow The Blind" was a bit heavier".
"Follow The Blind" shows Power Metal in its early hybrid stages. There is a lot of youthful vitality and energy here, which helps to balance out their relative inexperience. From its majestic opening in "The Ninth Wave," the continuation of the band's recent aims are determined in an effort four-and-a-half years in the making. As such, listeners can rest assured that they are in for another album experience that has been crafted with attention down to the detail.
A wholly cohesive and organised structure is this album's greatest strength, the driving force in what emphasises consistency in a manner unlike any of Blind Guardian's preceding records; an impressive feat considering their tendency to avoid inconsistency. A number of tracks are of a prevailingly up-tempo delivery that harkens to the band's Speed Metal origins with their irresistible drive and situated within an album best demonstrating Blind Guardian's symphonically enhanced modern sound, such as those occupying the album's centre in "Ashes Of Eternity" and "The Holy Grail", as the rhythm section dominates and urges the track-list onward. A majority of the record, however, seeks close arrangement with the orchestral component to form and maintain denser compositions with a tight unison between band and the enlisted grand orchestras and choirs (two and three, respectively). These German veterans have been around since the mid-’80s, and whether they are being influenced for, "At The Edge Of Time" maintains a stubbornly pre-’90s outlook - both musically and lyrically. The lyrics are strictly fantasy-based, as were so many pre-90s Metal lyrics. Blind Guardian continue to live and breath the ’70s and ’80s, reminding us that they enjoy the pomp of Queen as much as they enjoy the pomp of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.
Some will complain that this 64-minute CD sounds dated, but then, dated is exactly what Blind Guardian are going for; they don’t run away from it, they embrace it. Besides, one man’s dated is another man’s classicist.
Maybe not quite essential, "At The Edge Of Time" is an engaging album that not only achieves a fair amount of diversity within a Power and Progressive Metal framework - it is also one of the more consistent releases that Blind Guardian have provided in the 21st century!

One of most well-known and well-received albums in Blind Guardian's discography, "Nightfall In Middle-Earth" is a concept album based upon J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Silmarillion", a book of tales from the First Age of Middle-earth, recounting The War of the Jewels. The album contains not only songs but also spoken parts narrating parts of the story. The cover depicts Lúthien dancing in front of Morgoth.
It is the first album with Oliver Holzwarth as guest musician, playing bass guitar instead of Hansi Kürsch.
This is the first album to be recorded entirely at Blind Guardian’s own studio, aptly dubbed the Twilight Hall Studios.
It also was the first album by Blind Guardian to be released in the United States. The sales encouraged Century Media to release their entire back catalog in the US in 2007, at which point it was remastered and re-released, with an added bonus track.
The album has drawn universally positive critical acclaim since its release. Music critics have noted the fast, melodic guitar-work and the use of Folk instruments, flutes, violins, and other instruments. The album's songs are varied, with "quick-paced numbers", ballads, and operatic pieces. The album has been described as "grandiose" and influenced by Progressive Rock, and has been compared to Queen's operatic approach with "dense choir-like vocal harmonies set against swirling multi-part guitar lines". Remastered re-release of the fifth full-length studio album by legendary German Epic Power Metal band.
The atmosphere of this album is darker in comparison to their earlier works, such as "Battalions Of Fear", which had a relatively light tone.
"Imaginations From The Other Side" reiterates on the quasi-conceptual character of the two previous studio releases and, perhaps, ups the ante somewhat: the titular opening piece abstracts from particular imaginative stories and instead tells a story about imagination itself, referencing the childhood escapist-fantasies of The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Chronicles of Narnia. The album proceeds to tell the story of a child’s escape through a mirror to an Arthurian world of swords, dragons and crusades before being brought back to reality. This story is picked up again twenty years later on the "Beyond The Red Mirror" album, which tells the story of how the ‘other side’ has fallen into darkness, and the quest to find a way back.
"Imaginations From The Other Side" is the last album to feature Hansi Kürsch on bass, who would thenceforth give himself over entirely to vocal and lyric-writing duties.
This album also marks the first, since "Battalions Of Fear", in which Kai Hansen (Helloween, Gamma Ray) did not guest on vocals or guitar. It was also their first album to spawn Singles, "A Past and Future Secret" and "Bright Eyes".
In 2005, "Imaginations From The Other Side" was ranked number 373 in Rock Hard Magazine's book of "The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time". Loudwire named the album at second in their list "Top 25 Power Metal Albums of All Time" and Metal Hammer ranked it at third in a similar list.
No doubts, one of the best Blind Guardain albums and one of the best Heavy Metal album of all the times!
